The John Muir AwardParent information Meeting
P6 Yeargroup 2019/20
The John Muir Award� As you know, P6 have been undertaking the John Muir Award this year. We have looked at the history of John Muir, explored different outdoor places and looked at ways to protect our environment.
� Achieving this award will take personal commitment both in school and at HOME. The award will be part of the home learning for the year. Some pupils have completed this already but others have not.
� In order to achieve the award this must be completed by the Easter holidays.
Residential Trip� One of the main parts of our John Muir learning have been outdoor exploration trips to the Shieling Project.
� We have had 2 of these already and have 2 more to go.
� To wrap up our John Muir Award learning we will have a 2 night stay at the Shieling Project.
Residential Trip - Times
� Group 1 (Squirrel Group) will leave school on Monday 8th June at 9.15am and will return to school on Wednesday 10th June before the end of the school day.
� Group 2 (Deer Group) will leave school on Wednesday 10th June at 1pm and will return to school on Friday 12th June by 4pm.
Residential – Who Is Involved?� Each trip will be accompanied by Miss
Earnshaw and Mr Alasdair Earnshaw (Ex Head Teacher, Supply Teacher and also Miss Earnshaw’s dad).
� The group still at school will be participating in other John Muir based activities with Miss Morton.
� Sam at the Shieling Project will be leading the activities during the trips.
We need YOU!� For these trips to go ahead
safely, we need 1 parent volunteer for each group to stay for the residential.
� We also need 1 parent volunteer who would be willing to supervise the bus runs:○ leaving with Group 1 on Monday and
returning to Crown with the bus○ Leaving with Group 2 on Wednesday and
returning to Crown on the bus with Group 1
� If you are able to help, please speak to us at the end of the meeting or contact us via the school office :)
Mr Earnshaw - Who am I and why am I involved in this visit?
� I’m a retired head teacher. � My best memories as a child are
outdoors, either exploring, or even just “playing out!”
� I’ve spent the last 40 years as a volunteer and as a professional trying to share my enthusiasm and give others some of the and opportunities I’ve had.
� I’ve been involved in at least 1 residential visit per year for the last 32 years as a teacher.
� In my 16½ years as a head teacher, I’ve lead residential visits to Edinburgh, Glasgow and to rural places such as Torrin on the Isle of Skye.
� I’ve run the John Muir Discoverer award with the pupils in my schools for the last 10 years.
� The 2015 John Muir Award Conserve Audit contained the following quote.
� “The John Muir Award gives a sense of participating in something bigger, recognising the importance of small exploration and conservation within a global perspective. Each individual takes responsibility to play their part”.(Alasdair Earnshaw, Head Teacher, Auchtertyre & Loch Duich Pimary Schools, Highland.) It still sort of sums it up for me.

your home for the trip:
6 people per bothy, 3 bunks
compost toilets and wash area nearby:
Food� Group 2 (Deer) will have lunch in school on the first day (Wednesday).
� All food other than will be provided (breakfasts, lunches and dinner)
� If you want any specific snacks you will need to bring these
� We will take care of all allergies etc.� If food is likely to be an issue please contact us ASAP ☺
