As the saying goes, what’s old is new again. When I look back at our rich his-tory, I wonder to myself, what has kept Gleim the Jeweler going for all these years? It is more than our love and appreciation of gemstones and jewelry. It is our dedication and admiration for preserving the past and creating the future. Gleim the Jeweler is proud to have been part of the Palo Alto community for over eighty years. Our first store was opened by my grandfather in the midst of the Depression. My father worked at his side from the time we opened, and built our company into one of the most respected jewelry stores in the coun-try. And of course we could not have done it without the loyal support of our clients, and for that, we thank you! As we leap into the next eighty years and celebrate with you we wish you and your family all they very best.

Victorian 1835-1901The period marked a major change in the history of jewelry due to the discovery of diamond mines and the Industrial Revolution. Now women of any social class were able to wear and enjoy jewelry, not just the elite. The period is characterized by lockets and sentimen-tal motifs symbolizing love and friendship.

Art Nouveau + Arts&CraftsThis is the French jewelers’ revolt against the heavy jewelry of the Victorian era. This period is all about nature, ethereal and figura-tive forms. Gemstones like opals and moonstones are widely used along with enameling.

+ Art Deco 1880-1939Born in France in the 1920s, Art Deco erupted in the United States in a big way! Platinum and diamonds used in angular and geometric ways, as well as unusual color combinations, defined this time. Workmanship and quality of gems are typically of the highest caliber. Art Deco looks remain one of the most sought after periods.

Edwardian 1901-1915The Edwardian elegance and style was set by King Edward VII and the introduction of platinum for a lighter appearance and a more lacy look. The “garland style” is the most popular look to come out of this era. Fine milgrain and pierced and engraved metals give jew-elry the appearance of embroidery and lightness.

Contemporary 1960 to TodayWith the fascination of space in the 1960s, futuristic creations became popular, and in the ‘70s colors and motifs originating in India came into fashion. The use of yellow gold was bold and bright throughout the 1980s leading to wearable art. Jewelry today is fun, fashionable and a blend of styles.

Retro 1940-1949In the early 1940s platinum was needed as a strategic metal during World War II so designers turned to gold instead. Influenced by Hol-lywood, Retro jewelry is colorful, bold and flamboyant with big gems in oversized pieces. Most common are cocktail rings, brooches, and charm bracelets making the gold and gems the center of attention. Bold bows and stylized flower pins can trace their heritage back to this period.
