Now in its ninth year, the Jenner Society is a Medical Science Society established and run by the Sixth Form at Moreton Hall, with the support of the Biology Department. We invite speakers to discuss biological developments in the news and attend a range of events and workshops that have all helped Moreton girls to investigate and pursue careers in the Medical Sciences and in Veterinary Science.

We have been delighted by the interest and support that the Jenner Society has received and have invited a group of leading medics and academics to help us to steer the Society into the future, under the Chairmanship of Ruth Longfellow. Details of the Jenner Society Steering Group are included in this booklet.

Our aim, to make the Jenner Medical programme available as a forum for pupils f rom other local schools and colleges to learn and explore advances in Medical Science, is beginning to bear f ruit. Links with Keele University Medical School are now enabling us to extend our programme further af ield and this year we are running STEM workshops with St. Martin’s School to raise aspirations at a younger age.

With Moreton’s strong tradition of preparing girls for medical and veterinary careers, this is a very exciting time for the Jenner Society. With more girls than ever choosing Science as a career, we hope to provide our pupils with the resources that they need to excel.

For the next academic year, we have invited a wide range of speakers and planned events that we believe will help our students to pursue careers in Medical and Veterinary Science. We hope to attract students f rom other schools to the Faculty.

If you are reading this programme as a parent, Old Moretonian or simply as a student interested in Medical Science, have a look at which events and speakers you would like to attend or perhaps consider coming and talkingto the Jenner Society yourself.

D R M I C H E L E M O H A J E RDr Michele Mohajer is a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. She will talk about her specialism of which she says: “O&G satisf ies the altruistic needs I wanted my career to fulf il. There is a lot of counselling involved in this specialty, particularly when it comes to prenatal diagnosis and ultrasound scanning. I have to talk through many issues and problems with my patients and really listen to their concerns. The other main reason why I f ind O&G so enjoyable is the practical side. It is a lovely combination of all aspects of medical training – surgery, medicine, imaging and counselling. But best of all is that we still use and rely on our hands to tell us what’s going on.”
