Japanese Girl Stuff: Trends and Innovations in Popular Culture

Girls’ manga, anime, street fashion, and other notable aspects of girl culture are a focal point of media interest. Yet, less widely known forms of consumption and innovation are equally deserving of our attention. This talk will highlight some fascinating, yet frequently overlooked activities found in Japanese girl culture.

Laura Miller is Professor of Anthropology at Loyola University Chicago. She authored Beauty Up: Exploring Contemporary Japanese Body Aesthetics (University of California, 2006), and co-edited Bad Girls of Japan (Palgrave, 2005).
