SECTION 31 0000 - EARTHWORK

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE OF WORK

A. Work on this section includes grading (excavating) and filling as indicated on Drawings and the following:

1. Installation of utilities or modification of existing utilities may require performing

grading operations in stages, so that utilities may be installed and protected during site construction.

2. Scarifying and compaction of previously graded sites to ensure proper preparation and acceptability.

3. Excavation and embankment placement to required lines, grades, and elevations. 4. Preparation of existing low areas for placing of fill, including disposal of muck, silt,

wet, or unsuitable material. 5. If additional fill material is required the Contractor shall haul in additional suitable

material as necessary to provide properly graded site lines and grades. 6. If excess excavation is encountered and cannot be used to grade site in

accordance with Drawings, remove excess material and dispose of material offsite.

7. Remove materials from grading operations that are determined to be unsuitable by Owner and dispose of offsite in a legal manner at no additional cost to the owner.

8. Preparation of embankments to receive fill and preparation of excavation areas. 9. Removal of high plastic clays and replacement with suitable material within

building pad. B. Work shall comply with the latest edition of Alabama Department of Transportation

requirements and/or regulations and requirements of all governing authorities (ADEM, Jefferson County, City of Birmingham, etc.) in earthwork and erosion control of said above items.

1.3 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Refer to the architectural plans and specifications for specific requirements regarding the preparation of the building subgrade pad. Where those requirements for the building pad conflict with those stated herein, the architectural plans and specifications shall govern.

B. Refer to Geotechnical Report for additional information regarding existing site

conditions.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIALS

A. Topsoil: Use stockpile and topsoil on site at locations shown on the plans and to

complete landscape work indicated on Drawings and in accordance with specifications for landscaping. Existing topsoil shall be hauled offsite at no additional cost to the owner. Provide at least 4 inches of topsoil in unpaved areas to achieve finish grade.

B. Unclassified excavation: 1. All earthwork and excavation above planned sub-grade is determined as

unclassified for this project. Unclassified excavation is defined as any material encountered that is not suitable as structural fill without regard as to type or character; whether wet or dry; dark or light; dirt or rock; hard or soft; humus or non-humus; has a smell or does not smell; and is heavy or light in weight.

2. Unsuitable material encountered above planned sub-grade in all areas is unclassified excavation and shall be hauled offsite in a legal manner at no additional cost to the owner. Unsuitable material includes but not limited to

topsoil, highly plastic clays, and rock.

3. Unsuitable material encountered below planned sug-grade in all areas is considered classified excavation and shall be removed and replaced with select engineered fill material and paid for on a unit price basis as described in Specification Section 01 2200.

4. The contractor shall refer to the Geotechnical Investigation report provided

by Bhate Engineering Corporation. C. Acceptable Stabilization Fabrics and Geogrids: (required only where indicated on

D. Rock: Definition: Rock in beds, ledges, unstratified masses, and conglomerate deposits and

boulders of rock exceeding 1 cu yd for bulk excavation or ¾ cu yd for footing, trench, and pit excavation that cannot be removed by equipment equivalent to following, without systematic drilling, hammering, ripping, or blasting, when permitted:

1. Excavation of Footings, Trenches, and Pits: Late-model, track-mounted hydraulic excavator; equipped with 42” wide, short-tip-radius rock bucket; rated at not less than 120-hp flywheel power with bucket-curling force of not less than 25,000 lbf and stick-crowd force of not less than 18,700 lbf; measured per SAE J-1179.

2. Bulk Excavation: Late-model, track-mounted loader; rated at not less than 210-hp flywheel power and developing minimum 45,000-lbf breakout force; measured per SAE J-732.

3. Contractor shall provide a unit price for “Rock excavation and replacement with satisfactory material” and a unit price for “Trench rock excavation and replacement with satisfactory material” in the bid proposal form. Refer to specification section 01 2200 for additional requirements and instruction.

PART 3 – EXECUTION 3.1 PREPARATION

A. Material encountered in grading operation that is unsuitable or undesirable shall be as

follows: Unsuitable Materials: Material defined as organic or material that will not provide a stable foundation or material that will not compact to the requirements set forth in these specifications. Contractor's base bid will include accepting all material. No additional payment will be made for improvement or removal of unsuitable material.

1. All unsuitable material that is removed by the Contractor shall be disposed of off-

site at no additional cost to the Owner. 2. Backfill for these areas will be with material approved by the Testing Agency, with

layers of suitable material and compacted to the requirement set forth in these specifications.

B. Prior to placing fill perform following procedures:

1. Drain water out by gravity with ditch having flow line lower than lowest elevation in

low area. If drainage cannot be performed by gravity ditch, use adequate pump or any other measures necessary for drainage of site. Contractor shall at all times keep site graded to maximize runoff in case of rain. When rain is predicted, Contractor shall roll graded areas to seal against infiltration.

2. After drainage of area is complete, remove muck, mud, debris, and other material of unsuitable nature by using acceptable equipment and methods that will keep natural soils underlying low area dry and undisturbed.

3. Contractor shall contact the testing representative to inspect proof rolling operations. All areas failing proof rolling shall be undercut and replaced in accordance with these specifications.

C. Do not perform grading operations during period of wet weather when it would be

impossible to control moisture of soils. All areas that will support floor slabs to ten feet outside the building walls and pavements to five feet beyond the edge of paving shall be properly prepared as controlled fill areas.

D. After grade has been established in cut areas and prior to placement of fill in all fill

areas, the exposed subgrade should be carefully inspected by probing and testing as needed. All topsoil or other organic material still in place, frozen, wet, soft or loose soil and other undesirable materials shall be removed. The exposed subgrade shall furthermore be inspected by proof rolling to check for areas that rut, deflect or fail to tighten up or soft material hidden beneath a thin crust of better soil. All material thus exposed shall be considered unsuitable.

E. Use earth fill to replace undercut in building area and in future expansion area to

facilitate placement of utilities and future footings.

3.2.5 OVEREXCAVATION AND BACKFILL

Over excavation which is required to remove unsuitable natural undisturbed bedrock weakened by weathering or other cause not inflicted by the Contractor shall be immediately reported to the Owner and performed as directed by the contract. Material outside the excavation limits which are disturbed due to the fault or negligence of the Contractor or due to his failure to exercise sound construction practices, shall be either replaced by the Contractor with suitable materials (earth or concrete), or bolted, or both as directed, at no cost to the Owner.

3.3 PREPARATION OF SUBGRADE IN EMBANKMENTS (FILLS) AND CONTROLLED

FILL AREAS

A. The existing soil in fill areas shall be prepared for other phases of work to follow. All fill areas that will support floor slabs to ten feet out side the building walls and pavements to five feet beyond the edge of paving shall be properly prepared as controlled fill areas. This work shall include the following: 1. Remove all clearing and grubbing and topsoil from area to receive fill. All cavities

and irregularities shall be enlarged to permit use of compaction equipment, backfilled, and compacted as required.

2. Scarify and recompact the top 8” of the area to receive fill and all following fill layers to a minimum level of a 98% Maximum Dry Density based on the Standard Proctor Compaction Test, ASTM D-698 within +2 to -2 percentage points of optimum moisture content.

3. Proof roll prepared area in presence of testing representative. 4. The exposed subgrade shall be inspected by proof rolling to check for areas that

rut, deflect or fail to tighten up or soft material hidden beneath a thin crust of better soil. Any material thus exposed shall be considered unsuitable. All areas failing proof rolling shall be undercut and replaced in accordance with these specifications.

3.4 PREPARATION OF SUBGRADES IN EXCAVATION (CUT) AREAS

A. The exposed soil in cut areas shall be prepared for other phases of work to follow. All cut areas that will support floor slabs to five feet out side the building walls and pavements to three feet beyond the edge of paving shall be properly prepared. This work shall include the following: 1. After excavations have been cut to subgrade, the subgrade areas shall be

scarified to a minimum depth of 8 inches and compacted a 98% Maximum Dry Density based on the Standard Proctor Compaction Test, ASTM D-698 within -2 to +2 percentage points of optimum moisture content.

2. Proof roll prepared area in presence of testing representative. 3. The exposed subgrade shall be inspected by proof rolling to check for areas that

rut, deflect or fail to tighten up or soft material hidden beneath a thin crust of

better soil. Any material thus exposed shall be considered unsuitable. All areas failing proof rolling shall be undercut and replaced in accordance with these specifications.

3.5 FILLING AND SUBGRADING

A. Materials: Onsite materials are not acceptable as fill. The Contractor is responsible for locating

an adequate borrow source as part of the general scope of work.

B. Off site material to be used in controlled fill areas shall be free of topsoil and other organics. Approved structural fill shall have a liquid limit of less than 50 and the Plasticity Index less than 25. The dry density as determined by ASTM D-698 shall exceed 105 LB/CF. The maximum practice size shall be less than four (4”) inches. The material must obtain a CBR (California Bearing Ratio) soaked value of 5 minimum.

C. Fill placement can proceed after the surface densification is accomplished and proof rolling is completed.

D. Immediately prior to any slab construction or paving in areas which are at grade, subgrade should be proof-rolled to further densify the surface soils and detect soft areas. All areas that pump or rut shall be undercut.

E. All controlled fill shall be placed in thin lifts (maximum 8 inches loose measure). Soil should be aerated or moisture conditioned as necessary to maintain the moisture content within –2 to +2 percent of the optimum moisture content and compacted to a minimum of 98% compaction based on the Standard Proctor Test, D-698.

F. Remove areas of finished subgrade found to have soft spots to depth necessary and replace in a manner that will comply with compaction requirements by use of material equal to or better than best subgrade material on site. Surface of subgrade after compaction shall be hard, uniform, smooth, stable, and true to grade and cross-section. The surface shall be maintained for the duration of contract or until released by Owner.

G. Make acceptance of grades to receive buildings and paving by string line from grade

stakes (blue tops) set to grade on not more than 50’0” centers. Tolerance of +0.10' will be permitted. There will be no decrease or loss of thickness, or no deviation from allowable grade tolerances of the higher grade materials to be placed over the subgrade (i.e. base mixes, bituminous paving, crushed stone, concrete slabs, etc.). Provide field staking of work and provide engineering necessary for verification of lines, grades and elevations.

H. Existing soils can be used as structural only when modified by lime or admixtures. If

lime modification is used, all soils within two (2) feet of the proposed building pad sub-grade [one (1) foot in paved areas] and within 5 feet of the building area shall be lime treated. The determination of the optimum lime percentage shall be performed prior to bid and approved by the owner before the bid date. Due to the high plasticity of the residual soils, the percent of lime addition required is greater than 4% by weight. The

use of the existing soils with lime treatment used as structural fill shall be unclassified excavation. No additional payment will be granted to the contractor for unclassified excavation.

3.6 FINISH GRADING - OTHER THAN PAVED AREAS

A. Grade areas in which elevations or contours are indicated on Drawings, including excavated areas, filled and transition areas, and landscaped areas to uniform and smooth, finished surface, free from rock, debris, or irregular surface changes. Finished surface shall not be more than 0.10’ above or below finish grade or grade required for placement of topsoil or other material as noted on drawings or as required in these specifications, and all ground surfaces shall vary uniformly between indicated elevations. Grade ditches and swales to allow for proper drainage without ponding and in a manner that will minimize erosion potential.

B. Cover areas of project that have been disturbed by grading operations and are not to be covered by permanent construction such as pavements or buildings with 4” thickness of topsoil. Remove any excess topsoil from site, likewise, where deficient topsoil exist, import topsoil as needed.

C. Correct settlement in grade within one year after date of completion at no additional expense to owner. Bring grades to proper elevation. Re-planting or replacing any grass, shrubs, bushes, or other vegetation or construction disturbed by corrective measures.

D. All fill shall be placed in thin lifts (maximum 8 inches loose measure). Soil should be aerated or moisture conditioned as necessary to maintain the moisture content within –1 to +2 percent of the optimum moisture content and compacted to a minimum of 98% compaction based on the Standard Proctor Test, D-698.

E. Contractor shall include in the basic scope of work importing topsoil if none exists on

the site.

3.7 FLOOR SLAB, FOOTING BEARING AND PAVED AREA REQUIREMENTS:

A. Floor slabs and paved areas shall be supported on compacted controlled fill or prepared cuts exposed at grade. All floor slabs shall have at least 24 inches of low plasticity material above the plastic clay. In cut areas to reach final grade, and in areas requiring less than two (2) feet of fill, the existing soils shall be undercut to a minimum of 24 inches below the proposed building floor slab sub-grade elevation and replaced with approved structural fill material. Contractor shall provide a unit price in the bid proposal for “Removal of unsatisfactory soil and replacement with satisfactory soil material” for undercutting of the existing plastic clays and replacement with engineered fill if encountered beyond the limits described in these specifications.

B. Undercutting of the existing material shall extend to a minimum of five (5) feet outside the limits of the proposed building along sides that do not abut an existing building. Following undercutting and prior to commencing of fill placement, the plastic clay

exposed material shall be moisture conditioned to 2% wet of optimum and extending six (6) inches below the exposed sub-grade. Existing material that does not meet the minimum requirements of fill in this specification shall be hauled offsite and disposed of in a legal manner. Contractor shall provide a unit price in the bid proposal for “Removal of unsatisfactory soil and replacement with satisfactory soil material” for undercutting of the existing plastic clays and replacement with engineered fill if encountered beyond the limits described in these specifications.

C. If high plastic soils or organic materials are encountered in the footings, the high plastic

soils shall be undercut to a minimum depth of two (2) feet below the proposed finished grade at the exterior grade of the building. All footings shall be constructed to bear a minimum of three (3) feet below the proposed finish grade at the exterior grade of the building. All highly organic material shall be removed completely. All excavations shall be backfilled with compacted controlled fill in accordance with these specifications. Contractor shall provide a unit price in the bid proposal for “Removal of unsatisfactory soil and replacement with satisfactory soil material” for undercutting of the existing plastic clays and replacement with engineered fill if encountered beyond the limits described in these specifications.

D. If rock is exposed at the foundation bearing level, the rock shall be excavated to a minimum depth of 12 inches below the planned footing bearing elevation and the resulting overexcavation shall be backfilled with sand in order to serve as a bond break and to provide more uniform support. Contractor shall provide a unit price in the bid proposal for “Trench rock excavation and replacement with satisfactory soil material” for removal of rock and replacement with satisfactory material if encountered beyond the limits described in these specifications.

E. When it is necessary to extend a footing beyond the planned depth in order to reach a suitable bearing level, the overexcavation can be backfilled with lean concrete and the footing constructed at the planned bearing elevation.

F. Soil exposed in the base of all satisfactory foundation excavations shall be protected against any detrimental change in conditions such as disturbance from rain, frost, or flooding. Surface runoff shall be drained away from the excavations and shall not pond. Foundation bearing soils shall not be excessively dry immediately prior to concrete placement for construction of footings or floor slabs.

G. Footings shall be poured during the same day the excavation is made. If this is not possible, the footing excavation shall be adequately protected. Water is not allowed to collect over newly constructed footings and foundations.

H. If high plastic soils or organic materials are encountered at subgrade below the floor slab, the high plastic soils shall be undercut to a maximum depth of three feet below the subgrade. All highly organic material shall be removed completely. All excavations shall be backfilled with compacted controlled fill in accordance with these specifications.

I. Floor slabs shall be constructed over a minimum of 5 inches of densified, open-graded, free-draining, clean granular material with a maximum particle size of one (1) inch. PCA and ACI guidelines shall be followed for slab joint spacing, and permanent

supports shall be used to hold crack-control inclusion in its proper position. Refer to architectural specifications for vapor retarder requirements.

J. If rock is exposed at floor slab sub-grade the rock shall then be excavated to a minimum depth of 12 inches below final sub-grade elevation and the resulting overexcavation shall be backfilled with loose, clean sand. .

K. Sand fill shall be compacted to a minimum 98% standard density as determined by ASTM D-698. Gravel fill shall be consolidated use appropriate compaction techniques.

L. Contractor shall remove and replace all material found to be inappropriate for footing bearing. All bearing surfaces consisting of fill are proof-compacted with a manually operated piston type tamper prior to placement of the reinforcing steel.

M. Paved Areas- Plastic soils encountered at proposed paved area sub-grade shall be removed to a depth of at least 12 inches below the proposed pavement sub-grade elevation and replaced with properly compacted low plasticity engineered fill meeting the requirements of the specifications.

3.8 RIPRAP

A. Place rip rap in all areas where indicated on the drawings. The stone for rip rap shall

consist of field stone or rough unhewn quarry stone as nearly uniform in section as is practical. The stones shall be dense, resistant to the action of air and water, and suitable in all aspects for the purpose intended.

B. Slopes and other areas to be protected shall be dressed to the line and grade shown on the plans prior to the placing of rip rap. Contractor shall then undercut the areas to receive rip rap to an elevation equal to the final elevation less the average diameter of the stones before placing the rip rap. This will be considered critical around flumes and other drainage structures. Stones shall be placed so that the greater portion of their weight is carried by the earth and not by the adjacent stones. The stones shall be placed in a single layer with close joints. The upright areas of the stone shall make an angle of approximately 90 with the embankment slope. The courses shall be placed from the bottom of the embankment upward, the larger stones being placed in the lower courses. open joints shall be filled with spalls. Stones shall be embedded in the embankment as necessary to present a uniform top surface such that the variation between tops of adjacent stones shall not exceed three inches.

3.9 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Independent Testing Laboratory selected and paid by the owner shall be retained to

perform construction testing on site. General Contractor shall request for testing as follows: 1. Fill Placed in Areas to be Paved: At least one compaction test for every 2,500

3.1 SITE CLEARING

A. Site clearing contractor shall meet with Owner prior to removing any trees and shrubs to verify all removals. No trees shall be removed within tree save areas indicated on drawings.

B. Remove trees, shrubs, grass, other vegetation, all organic material, improvements, or

obstructions interfering with installation of new construction as indicated on plans by limits of grading, except where shown to remain.

C. Remove items elsewhere on site or premises as specifically indicated. Removal includes

digging out stumps and roots.

D. Strip topsoil to whatever depths encountered to prevent intermingling with underlying subsoil or other objectionable material. Remove heavy growths of grass from areas before stripping.

compact to density equal to adjacent original ground.

3.2 DISPOSAL OF WASTE MATERIALS

A. Burning on Owner Property: Burning will not be permitted.

B. Removal from Owner Property: Contractor shall remove waste materials and unsuitable

material from Owner property and dispose of off site in legal manner. Soil materials must be disposed of in accordance with State and Local regulations.

C. Burial of waste materials on-site will not be allowed.

D. At the Contracting Officer’s discretion, excess topsoil shall be stored on-site or disposed of

3.2 TRENCH EXCAVATION

A. Dig trench at proper width and depth for laying pipe, conduit, or cable. Cut trench banks as nearly vertical as practical for safe installation of system, and remove stones as necessary to avoid point-bearing. Over excavate wet or unstable soil, if encountered, form trench bottom as necessary to provide suitable base for continuous and uniform bedding.

B. Minimum requirements shall be that all trench excavation side walls greater than 4 feet in depth shall be sloped, shored, sheeted, braced or otherwise supported by means providing sufficient protection for the workmen within them in accordance with the applicable rules and regulations established for construction by the Department of

Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and by local ordinances or other governing authorities. Lateral travel distance to an exit ladder or steps shall not be greater than 25 feet in trenches that are 4 feet or deeper.

C. Accurately grade trench bottom to provide uniform bearing and support for each section of pipe on undisturbed soil or bedding material at every point along entire length, except where necessary to excavate for bell holes, proper sealing of pipe joints, or other required connections. At joints, dig no deeper, longer, or wider than needed to make joint connection properly.

D. For pipes or conduit with a vertical height of 48” or less, the bottom of the trench shall not be less than 12” nor more than 1/3 pipe diameter wider than outside surface of any pipe or conduit. All other trench width requirements for pipe, conduit, or cable shall be held to a minimum width that will allow for safe installation, and proper compaction of trench backfill.

E. Trench depth requirements measured from finished grade or paved surface shall be in accordance with the following or any applicable codes and ordinances: 1. Water Mains: Minimum cover over top of pipe as required by governing agencies or

30”, whichever is greater. 2. Sanitary Sewer: Depths, elevations, and grades as indicated on Drawings. 3. Storm Drains: Depths, elevations, and grades as indicated on Drawings. 4. Electrical Conduits: 24” minimum cover to top of conduit or as required by NEC 300-

5 and NEC 710-36 codes, or as directed by electrical specifications or the power company, whichever is deeper.

5. TV Conduits: 18” minimum cover to top of conduit or as required by the local utility company, or as directed by electrical specifications whichever is deeper.

6. Telephone Conduits: 18" minimum cover to top of conduit or as required by the local utility company, or as directed by electrical specifications whichever is deeper.

7. Gas Mains and Service: 30” minimum cover to top of pipe or as required by gas company or mechanical specifications which ever is greater.

3.3 SHEETING AND BRACING

Provide sheeting and bracing, where necessary, in trenches and other excavations where protection of workmen is required. Sheeting may be removed after excavation has been backfilled sufficiently to protect workmen or material against damaging or injurious caving in.

3.4 PIPE BEDDING

A. Accurately cut trenches for pipe or conduit that is to be installed to designated elevations and grades to line and grade 4” below bottom of pipe and to width as specified. Place 4" of bedding material, compact in bottom of trench, and accurately shape to conform to lower portion of pipe barrel. After pipe installation, place select backfill and compact in maximum 6” layers measured loose.

B. Unsuitable trench sub-grade: Unsuitable soils shall be overexcavated to reach suitable

soils and the unsuitable soils are to be removed offsite. Backfill the overexcavation with specified bedding material. Contractor shall include this work on a unit price basis covered

3.5 TRENCH BACKFILLING

A. Criteria: Do not backfill trenches until required tests are performed, utility systems are inspected as required and are accepted by applicable governing authority. Backfill trenches as specified. If improperly backfilled, reopen to depth required to obtain proper compaction. Backfill and compact, as specified, to properly correct condition in an acceptable manner.

B. Backfilling: After pipe or conduit has been installed, bedded, and tested as specified, backfill trench or structure excavation with specified material placed in lifts or layers not exceeding 6” of loose measurement. Material and compact shall meet the require-ments set forth in Section 31 0000, "Earthwork", except the maximum particle size shall not exceed 1”.

C. Compaction: Exercise proper caution when compacting immediately over top of pipes or conduits. Water jetting or flooding is not permitted as method of compaction. Compact in accordance with requirements of Section 31 0000 “Earthwork”.

D. Compaction Testing: An independent testing laboratory shall perform test at intervals not exceeding 100 of trench for each 6” of compacted trench backfill and furnish copies of test results as specified.

3.6 TESTING

A. Compaction Testing: An independent testing laboratory paid for by the owner shall perform test at intervals not exceeding 200 of trench for each 6” of compacted trench backfill and furnish copies of test results as specified.

1.5 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Environmental Limitations: To ensure penetration, do not treat soil that is water saturated or frozen. Do not treat soil while precipitation is occurring. Comply with requirements of the EPA-Registered Label and requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

B. Coordinate soil treatment application with excavating, filling, grading, and concreting operations. Treat soil under footings, grade beams, and ground-supported slabs before construction.

1.6 WARRANTY

A. Soil Treatment Special Warranty: Manufacturer's standard form, signed by Applicator and Contractor, certifying that termite control work, consisting of applied soil termiticide treatment, will prevent infestation of subterranean termites. If subterranean termite activity or damage is discovered during warranty period, re-treat soil and repair or replace damage caused by termite infestation.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 SOIL TREATMENT

A. Termiticide: Provide an EPA-Registered termiticide, complying with requirements of authorities having jurisdiction, in an aqueous solution formulated to prevent termite infestation. Provide quantity required for application at the label volume and rate for the maximum termiticide concentration allowed for each specific use, according to product's EPA-Registered Label.

1. Service Life of Treatment: Soil treatment termiticide that is effective for not less than three years against infestation of subterranean termites.

2.2 BAIT-STATION SYSTEM

A. Provide bait stations based on the dimensions of building perimeter indicated on Drawings, according to manufacturer's EPA-Registered Label for product, manufacturer's written instructions, and the following:

1. No fewer than one bait station per 20 linear feet.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Examine substrates, areas, and conditions, with Applicator present, for compliance with requirements for moisture content of soil per termiticide label requirements, interfaces with earthwork, slab and foundation work, landscaping, utility installation, and other conditions affecting performance of termite control.

B. Proceed with application only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. General: Comply with the most stringent requirements of authorities having jurisdiction and with manufacturer's written instructions for preparation before beginning application of termite control treatment. Remove all extraneous sources of wood

Loosen, rake, and level soil to be treated except previously compacted areas under slabs and footings. Termiticides may be applied before placing compacted fill under slabs if recommended in writing by termiticide manufacturer.

1. Fit filling hose connected to water source at the site with a backflow preventer, complying with requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

3.3 APPLICATION, GENERAL

A. General: Comply with the most stringent requirements of authorities having jurisdiction and with manufacturer's EPA-Registered Label for products.

3.4 APPLYING SOIL TREATMENT

A. Application: Mix soil treatment termiticide solution to a uniform consistency. Provide quantity required for application at the label volume and rate for the maximum specified concentration of termiticide, according to manufacturer's EPA-Registered Label, to the following so that a continuous horizontal and vertical termiticidal barrier or treated zone is established around and under building construction. Distribute treatment evenly.

1. Slabs-on-Grade and Basement Slabs: Under ground-supported slab construction, including footings, building slabs, and attached slabs as an overall treatment. Treat soil materials before concrete footings and slabs are placed.

2. Foundations: Adjacent soil, including soil along the entire inside perimeter of foundation walls; along both sides of interior partition walls; around plumbing pipes and electric conduit penetrating the slab; around interior column footers, piers, and chimney bases; and along the entire outside perimeter, from grade to bottom of footing. Avoid soil washout around footings.

3. Crawlspaces: Soil under and adjacent to foundations as previously indicated. Treat adjacent areas including around entrance platform, porches, and equipment bases. Apply overall treatment only where attached concrete platform and porches are on fill or ground.

4. Masonry: Treat voids. 5. Penetrations: At expansion joints, control joints, and areas where slabs will be

penetrated.

B. Avoid disturbance of treated soil after application. Keep off treated areas until completely dry.

C. Protect termiticide solution, dispersed in treated soils and fills, from being diluted until ground-supported slabs are installed. Use waterproof barrier according to EPA-Registered Label instructions.

E. Reapply soil treatment solution to areas disturbed by subsequent excavation, grading, landscaping, or other construction activities following application.

3.5 INSTALLING BAIT-STATION SYSTEM

A. Place bait stations according to the EPA-Registered Label for the product and manufacturer's written instructions, in the following areas that are conducive to termite feeding and activity:

1. Conducive sites and locations indicated on Drawings. 2. In and around infested trees and stumps. 3. In mulch beds. 4. Where wood directly contacts soil. 5. Areas of high soil moisture. 6. Near irrigation sprinkler heads. 7. Each area where roof drainage system, including downspouts and scuppers,

drains to soil. 8. Along driplines of roof overhangs without gutters. 9. Where condensate lines from mechanical equipment drip or drain to soil. 10. At plumbing penetrations through ground-supported slabs. 11. Other sites and locations as determined by licensed Installer.

B. Inspect and service bait stations from time of their application until Substantial Completion unless extended by continuing service agreement, according to the EPA-Registered Label for product and manufacturer's written instructions for termite management system and bait products.

1. Service Frequency: Inspect bait stations not less than once every three month(s).
