More than 1,200 Jaguars kicked off a summer

of celebration in style on 6 May, as Windsor

Castle opened its gates to some of the world’s

rarest and most desirable models in Jaguar’s

history for the Royal Windsor Jaguar Festival,

in support of The Prince Philip Trust Fund.

The Jaguar Classic-supported Festival was

organized by the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club

following an invitation from the Prince Philip

Trust Fund. The event attracted an estimated

6500 visitors from across the world, with cars

coming from Germany, Italy, Holland, France,

Sweden, and Norway, as well as owners from

the US and Canada.

Jaguar’s ‘new original’ XKSS made its UK debut

at the event. Jaguar Classic is currently building

nine ‘lost’ XKSS supercars to the correct 1957

specifications of those destroyed in a fire at

Jaguar’s Browns Lane factory 60 years ago.

Other highlights were driven through the

historic town of Windsor and through the

castle grounds, including the sole 1966 XJ13 –

from the Jaguar Heritage Trust collection.

Although built as a Le Mans 24-Hours

contender, the 5-litre V12 machine never got a

chance to compete in the legendary French

endurance motor race.

A number of other distinctive Jaguars adorned

the Long Walk in the grounds of Windsor

Castle, including one of the 10 specially-

sourced base cars for Jaguar Classic’s recently-

announced E-type Reborn factory restoration

program, a 200mph F-TYPE SVR and a Union

Flag emblazoned XK8 Convertible.

Tim Hannig, Director, Jaguar Land Rover Classic, said:

The Royal Windsor Jaguar Festival was a dream event for us: we like nothing better than spending time with fellow

Jaguar enthusiasts and discussing how we can support them, so doing that at such a magnificent venue as Windsor, for

charity, was a huge privilege.

“We’re proud to serve all

enthusiasts of older

Jaguars, whether they’re

looking for an authentic car

to buy, genuine parts,

expert servicing or

fabulous experiences.

Oakbourne Mansion, located in the heart of Westtown

Township, is a large Victorian building that originated as a

residence in the late 19th Century. It was built by Mr. And Mrs.

John Hulme, who used it as a summer home for several years. In

1882, Mr. and Mrs. James Smith purchased the Mansion and

surrounding grounds. They enlarged the building and

developed the grounds into an arboretum and horse breeding

operation. After Mrs. Smith’s death in 1893, the property was

willed to the Philadelphia Protestant Episcopal City Mission. At

this time, it was used as a convalescent home for women. The

Westtown Township purchased the Mansion and surrounding

grounds some seventy years later.

The Mansion is currently owned and operated by the Westtown

Township for public meetings, community activities and private

fulltime living quarters for the groundskeeper. A water tower of

unusual architectural character is located approximately 200

feet to the southwest of the Mansion. Though the tower is no

longer used for water storage, it remains as a well-preserved

example of historic design and construction techniques.

Tucked away between residential and industrial neighborhoods lies one of the few remaining grass field

aerodromes in New York State. The only other one I know of is upstate, Rhinebeck Aerodrome.

A handful of members turned out for this event to enjoy the beautiful weather and tour the grounds of the

Bayport Aerodrome. Two members, Don Wolf, displaying his Cheetah and Kurt Uzbay, displaying his Jaguar

entered their cars in the show to be judged.

Between the hangars there were plenty of cars

being displayed along with large number of

vintage motorcycles. These vehicles went back

to the beginning of 1900 all the way to the

1980’s. There were restored, modified, and

original classics with patina and shine to suit

any taste. You could see anything from a brass lantern headlight car, dirt track racer, post-war hot rod,

muscle car, or your favorite Corvette (whichever year that may be). This was certainly not limited to this

side of the pond. Besides some Jaguars, there was a nice mix of BMW, MG, Austin Healey, and Ferrari to

compliment the American steel.

(Continued on page 9)

Transportation at the Bayport Aerodrome

Page 9: The JAG MAG - JDCLI · The Capital Region Jaguar Club of New York, Ltd. (CRJCNY) invites all Jaguar owners to join us for Jaguar Day at the Hemmings Motor News facility and museum

The motorcycles on display included plenty of well-used and still running examples of the freedom of two

wheels. Others were fully restored which looked as if they were made only yesterday. There were even

some interesting rides from the other side of the Atlantic such as BSA, BMW, and Honda. While you were

admiring the rides, there was a steady stream of newcomers pulling into the field and lining up for show.

The aerodrome was full of vintage by-planes, mono planes and some historic works of restoration of some

very unusual planes such as the Russian Yak. Model airplanes of all kinds were also on display. Nearby were

actual aircraft engines with some having cut outs so you could see the inner workings of the engines. Just

some interesting trivia, Don Wolf’s late father at one time had his custom built plane stored at one of the

hangars not that long ago and use to fly it from there. By coincidence, I ran into the President of the

Aerodrome club (John Bianco) back a few months ago who I worked together with on the railroad and he is

now retired (as am I) and he took up the hobby of flying. He owns a yellow biplane and saw him giving

someone a ride during the show. It’s really something to see these vintage planes fly and here the roar of

their engines.

There was a raffle for a free biplane ride as well for those who would like to experience the thrill of flying in

an open cockpit. It is just like driving your convertible Jaguar with the top down, only slightly faster. A

couple of private helicopters flew in for the show as well, showing their agility for a soft landing and take-off.

One unique aspect of the aerodrome was that pilots must use what they call “line of sight” for take offs and

landings since there is no control tower. This is very much the way it was decades ago when air fields began

popping up around the country in aviation’s infancy.

The show was much larger then what I expected as far as the amount of motorcycles, cars and planes plus a

very good turnout of spectators. They were estimating around 2,500 spectators came to the show. There

was also a live band and you could purchase a burger or hot-dog from the grill area.

You can come any Sunday to the aerodrome and see the owners working on their planes, flying them, and

socialize with and as well. They are a very enthusiastic group. There’s also a model airplane group that meets

in one of the hangars.

This was a very cool place to visit and a good time had by all who participated.

Air Conditioned, JDHT Certificate original LHD built for export.

The Jaguar Mark 2 was an elegant update of the company’s first

small unibody sedan of 1955. It is considered to be the best-

looking compact Jaguar sedan ever built. The Mark II modified

the original design, which was not called Mark I until its

successor arrived. The new car had a larger greenhouse, bigger

side and rear windows framed in chrome trim, a new grille with

a central bar, and fitted fog lamps. Although the sweeping lines

of the Mark I were

preserved, the

rear track was

widened. Gone

were the full rear

fender skirts, as

t h e y w e r e

replaced by partial

skirts that could

display the rear

wheels and tires.

The interior was a thing of beauty and featured a walnut veneer

dash, a huge speedometer and tachometer, which were now

moved in front of the driver, a row of toggle switches in the

center, located beneath secondary gauges and comfortable

leather seats. Reclining front seats were optional, as were the

seat backs that contained fitted picnic tables.

The engine was now 3.8 liter displacement from the previous

3.4. The gearbox was usually a four-speed with overdrive, and

most cars were built with wire wheels, which is the preferred

option. The Jaguar 3.8 Mk 2 became the fastest four-door

production sedan. With 220 HP on tap, 125 mph was possible

and a limited-slip differential became standard. Four-wheel disc

brakes that had proved their worth on the D-Types racing cars

became standard equipment.

This Mk 2 has less than 1,000 miles since its superb photo

documented restoration by UK marquee specialist. It was

originally sold in the U.S. and had been in its original ownership

until it was returned to the UK for a painstaking, documented

frame-off restoration by marque specialists. The restoration

took seven years. During the restoration the Mk 2 was fitted

with air conditioning, an AM/FM radio and power steering.

This Mk 2 is without a

doubt one of the finest of

its kind and will prove its

new owner with the very

first family sports sedan

w i t h s p o r t s c a r

characteristics. It is

complete with all records

and original took kit.

Original miles, 4-speed manual gearbox, Matching numbers,

“The Museum of Modern Art in New York City placed a Jaguar

E-Type in its permanent exhibit. The E-Type was just the third

car to be honored by the curators of the museum's permanent

exhibit. Released in 1961, the E-Type was the first model

released by Jaguar Motors after a disastrous fire destroyed the

company's production facilities in 1957. The car's sleek lines

made it an immediate success. The E-Type is the epitome of

Jaguar's exquisite feel for body design. The car is literally a work

of art.”

This E-type is in

p r e s e r v a t i o n

condition, it has

only been restored

when and where

needed. It is finished

in its original color

combination as

originally delivered

when new on

October 3, 1966 to

its first registered owner, Mr. Bernard Visnick, Mattapan, MA,

USA. This E-type has its original body with no rust or accident

damage and has received only one repaint since new and in its

original color. The interior is fully intact with a wonderful rich

patina because of superb care for from new.

This E-type has enjoyed only three owners from new, the last

two both well-known in the vintage automobiles circles, its

history is well documented. The first owner used the E-type

until the mid-1970’s when it was put into storage. It remained in

storage until circa 2011 and its 2nd ownership. At this time, all

mechanical components were meticulously refurbished but with

an eye towards preserving the originality and integrity of the car

overall. It received a complete disassembly, a totally rebuilt the

engine, gearbox, rear end, suspension and brakes as well as a

new stainless steel exhaust system and new wire wheels and

tires. Today, this E-type runs extremely well and strong and with

the feel that few restored examples will ever enjoy. Having been

in the ownership of an expert Jaguar technician for many years,

under the bonnet is excellent and detailed well. A perfectionist

about the mechanical details, great effort went into it to make

sure the car drove as well as it possibly could. Don't let the

originality of this car fool you, this is a fully sorted example.

This E-type is complete with original tool roll, factory jack in

bag, original radio, original factory Dunlop RS5 spare tire (never

used) and its owner’s manual & warranty book in pouch that

confirms the original

owners name which

matches the Jaguar

Heritage Certificate. This is a superb E-type

that has been cared for

from new and which is

per fec t fo r any

concours preservation

class. It is extremely

rare having been truly

cared for and with

originality in mind,

something that is not

easily duplicated. An

automobile can always

be restored, but this

l e ve l o f superb

originality is a rare find

due to the care that

must be taken by all of

its custodians from new. It is a truly unmolested Jaguar E-type.

British cars in watercolor: An artist's gallery opens on the Web

FEBRUARY 16, 2016

ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA - If you like British cars, and insist on good art, watercolor artist George Ellis has lots of fine art prints to choose from. Whether your interest is in MGs, Jaguars, Austin-Healeys, or other British cars, Mr. Ellis offers a growing list of prints featuring the classics.

Mr. Ellis is not new to painting cars; he's been painting for 15 years. What's new is that he is now offering Open Edition and Limited Edition prints of his work at his Web site, www.GeorgeEllis.com. The prints are produced to the highest standards.

At the George Ellis Gallery online, visitors are greeted by a light green SS-100 Jaguar in a beach scene. Clicking the first of the links at the left of the screen, one reads "About the Art," which offers a brief synopsis of the artist, the art, the prints, and how to order prints through the site.

The prints come in a variety of sizes: most are 11x14 inches, some are larger (up to 16x20 inches), and some are available as 5x7 inch prints. They're produced with archival inks on watercolor-type paper to hold their true colors well over time. It's expensive to make prints this way, but fine art is meant to last indefinitely.

Mr. Ellis's art looks attractive on the walls of any home, garage, shop, office, and of course "mancaves." Limited Edition prints in particular represent an investment in art that can be expected to gain in value over the years.

To visit the George Ellis Gallery online, go to www.GeorgeEllis.com. The site accepts major credit cards and PayPal, and it offers "old school" customers the low-tech option of printing out a paper order form. If you have questions or would like to leave a comment, use the Contact form in the links list. The Gallery also accepts commissions; e-mail inquiries to [email protected] or call the Gallery at 631-757-3722 during business hours for details.
