(B,D)July 11 I San Gimignano I Civita di Bagnoregio I Rome Afterour final Tuscan breakfast, we once again board our luxury touringcoach - il pullman - and travel to Rome through the land once knownas Etruria. En route we will encounter the ancient Etruscan town ofCivita di Bagnoregio overlooking the Tiber River valley. There issomething oddly attractive about a place destined to disappear. Atfirst glance, Civita di Bagnoregio is just that: a charming medievaltown in central Italy that, owing to its fragile geology, has been slowlycrumbling for thousands of years. The Etruscans chose the site for itshigh ground in the 6th century B.C., but much of that ground hassince fallen away. Civita di Bagnoregio is built on what is known as“tuff,” volcanic rock over a bed of soft clay and sand. In a region proneto frequent earthquakes, and further aggravated by a substantialamount of landslide-triggering rain, Civita di Bagnoregio has lost 20%of its terrain since 1705. Today there are only around seven year-round residents, and many buildings have collapsed due to thechronic erosion of the plateau underlying the town. After visiting thisotherworldly site, we continue our travel south to Rome. After ourafternoon arrival and hotel check-in, we can unpack, relax andfreshen-up. This evening’s highlight will be truly special: a private finaldinner together with entertainment! Overnight at First Class hotel inRome.
