Even though their were some ups and downs in the wedding, it still turned out to be a lovely ceremony with a lovely couple who have many things in common. SPECIAL! A few days after the wedding, Katherine and Petruchio were planning to go to a dinner at her father’s home. But after Petruchio was acting rude and unappreciative, they did not attend the feast.  Is Katherine and Petruchio’s marriage going to last, or is it going to turn out to be a horrid disaster!?

Yep its true, Bianca was just recently married to Lucentio a week after her big sis Katherine “The Shrew” Minola was married to Petruchio of Verona.

Katherine & Petruchio Bianca & Lucentio (disguised as a tutor named Cabio)

continued...

The Scheme behind the Marriage - Do you remember when Baptista said that his eldest daughter, Katherine, must marry before his youngest daughter, Bianca, is allowed to get married? Well, right after her big sister Kate got married so did Bianca. The couple had first met when Lucentio was disguised as a Latin tutor named Cambio to woo Bianca on Gremio’s behalf. Little did Gremio know that instead Lucentio was wooing this gorgeous belle for himself? “ Hic ibat, as I told you before, Simois, I am Lucentio, hic est, son unto Vincentio of Pisa, Sigeia tellus, disguised thus to get your love, Hic steterat, and that “Lucentio” that comes a-wooing, Priami is my man Tranio, regia, bearing my port, celsa senis, that we might beguile the old pantaloon.” - Lucentio (Act 3 Scene 1 pg 111). On the other hand we have Lucentio’s submissive servant Tranio (disguised as Lucentio) offering his hand in marriage to Bianca on behalf of Lucentio by way of Baptista. Baptsita had then asked to meet with Tranio’s (aka Lucentio’s) father Vincentio to confirm the dowry offered to Bianca. Tranio then found a merchant to act as the real Vincentio and quickly confirm the set dowry due to the fact that the real Vincentio was oblivious to the scheming taking place between Tranio and Lucentio. Bianca and Lucentio had then married secretly after Bianca’s other suitors; Hortensio & Tranio (aka Lucentio) forswore their pursuit of Bianca without telling Baptista. Bianca was giddy to see that her one true love Lucentio was all hers. However, the real Vincentio extemporaneously shows up having everyone confused as to who is really who until Tranio and Lucentio’s ingenious plan of wooing Bianca spills out.

At the wedding- Kate’s jaw dropping speech This dazzling and exclusive banquet took place at Baptista’s Padua house having all three couples; Lucentio, Bianca, Katherine, Petruchio, and Hortensio accompanied by the Widow attend. All together the wedding came to a total of 30,000 crowns, only the best for Baptista’s favorite daughter. In between small talk and dinning Petruchio was continually confronted and teased about marrying Katherine “The Shrew”. When the wives get into a nasty argument Petruchio then makes a bet of 100 crowns with Hortensio and Lucentio that if they all summon their wives, Katherine will be the first to come and the most obedient in

012 come and respond saying that their husband shall come to them. However, Katherine promptly

arrives and Petruchio wins the wager. Petruchio then commands that Katherine bring the other wives to their husbands and educate them on their wifely duties. Katherine then conveys a long speech devoted to women’s obedience towards their husbands. “Your husband is your lord, your life, your keeper, your head, your sovereign, one who cares for you and who, for your ease and comfort, commits his body to harsh labor both on land and sea. A woman owes her husband the same loyalty a subject owes his king.” – Katherine (Act 5 Scene 2 pg 219). After Kate’s long speech Petruchio and Katherine had set off to bed leaving all the guests who attended the wedding at aw.

Interviews from the attendees of the wedding… See how Vincentio, Bianca, and Baptista answer your questions on how they felt about this unplanned wedding.

Q: How did you feel about your son’s plan of marrying Bianca without any of your view or consent on the matter? (To Vincentio)

A: I felt that if I didn’t show up in Padua, I would have not been able to attend his wedding and because of this it makes me feel that my son, Lucentio, no longer wants me to be part of his life. By marrying that girl without of my consent makes me feel that I’m only there to offer money to my son. I also wished that he could have simply told me that he was getting married instead of planning to do it behind my back. I know he is no longer a young lad but he is still my son.

Q: When did you realize that you were in love with Lucentio? (To Bianca)

A: Well, I had first developed a crush on him when he had taught me my first Latin lesson. In between lines of Latin he had expressed his plans on wooing me and told me a little about himself whereas some of my other tutors just asked me to marry them as soon as they met me without even telling me something about themselves. I thought the way he presented himself towards me was very cute but not too pushy.

Q: How did you feel about being schemed by Lucentio, Tranio, & your own daughter Bianca?

A: At the time I was very confused as to what happened but once I fully understood I was very disappointed in the three of them especially because I had never thought my Bianca would have been this conniving. Also because Lucentio and Tranio had made up a plan to marry Bianca behind my back when instead they could have just told me about their plans or they could have just wooed Bianca like every other suitor did by doing it the old fashion way of asking for the father’s permission and going from there. I just don’t understand why Lucentio couldn’t have just asked his real father to come and confirm the set dowry. Otherwise if the real Vincentio hadn’t showed up and the whole scheme hadn’t fallen apart I probably never would have known about Lucentio’s plan to marry my virtuous daughter, Bianca.

What has happened to our shrew? Has Katherine Minola really been tamed by her newly wed husband Petruchio? Has his methods of starvation, depriving her of her sleep, and many more finally worked into place?

Katherine Minola has been TAMED! By Sarah Welchel

Has our gorgeous shrew Kate really been tamed. Stay tuned to find out.

It turns out Katherine Minola has finally been tamed by Petruchio, after Baptistaʼs long years trying to do just that Petruchio seems to be the only one who knows how to “domesticate” Katherine. But does she really know what is behind her newly wedded husbandʼs deceitful plan? According to a near by conversation Grumio says it seems as though Petruchio is taking a different side of trying to calm Katherine. “That bate and beat, and will not be obedient. She eat no meat today, nor none shall eat; Last night she slept not, nor tonight she shall not; As with the meat, some undeserved fault. I'll find about the making of the bed; And here I'll fling the pillow, there the bolster, This way the coverlet, another way the sheets.” (Act 4, Scene 1) Petruchio seems to be tricking Katherine into thinking that she deserves better than what she is receiving. He has stripped her from her necessities of sleep, food, and all of her energy because he accused the meat that was prepared for Katherine was “marred” and not well cooked and that her bed was not made to his expectations for her. Katherine only thought that Petruchio was doing this for her because he loved her and because he only wanted the best for her. As Katherineʼs emotions bobbled it was heard that she had felt hopeless in the situation and that she had no other choice but to marry him, but would she become submissive to him and obey his every command? Katherine had always been the one in command and she was never not the more prominent one in any of her relationships, until her marriage with Petruchio. When an argument of logic being whether the sun was up and it was light outside or

whether the sun had set and it had become dark out. Katherine argued but then supposedly gave up to Petruchio when in fact knew she was correct. After showing she had harmonized with Petruchio, he then turned around and accused her of lying and showed that obviously that her answer that had now become his was the only right answer. Katherine only thought that he was arguing with her because he wanted to show that she was right after all, when all he was doing as taming her. Later on in the week right after Katherineʼs younger sister Bianca got married to Lucentio, Katherine, Petruchio, Hortensio and his Widowed wife, and the newly weds (Bianca and Lucentio) all had a gathering together to share a feast. Katherine and Hortensioʼs widowed wife were nagging and talking back at each other and started chasing each other out of the room with Bianca following behind. When the women had left Hortensio, Lucentio, and Petruchio (with Baptista watching) they had declared a bet on obedience. “Letʼs each one send unto his wife, and he whoʼs wife is most obedient, to come at first when he doth send for her, shall win the wager, which we will propose.” (Act 5, Scene 2) The men had made the bet based on whoʼs wife will return his command when he first asks her to come, and whoever wins will receive a dashing 100 crowns. Hortensio asks for his wife but she does not obey, Lucentio confidently asks for his wife but she does not come, when finally Petruchio asks for his wife and when everyone thinks she will not respond she ends up walking through the room holding both the widow and Bianca in her arms at Petruchioʼs command. But when does Katherine truly showed that she has been tamed?

For a while Bianca and the Widow discuss how women have their own opinions and should not be owned by their male spouse. Then Katherine comes and finally shows her opinion, “Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, thy head, thy sovereign; one that cares for thee, And for thy maintenance commits his body, to painful labour both by sea and land, to watch the night in storms, the day in cold, whilst thou liest warm at home, secure and safe; And craves no other tribute at thy hands but love, fair looks and true obedience; Too little payment for so great a debt. Such duty as the subject owes the prince, even such a woman oweth to her husband.” (Act 5, Scene 2) In her speech she says that she is only what her man wants her to be and that he controls her and the only choice she has is to obey him and make his command her only priority. Thus, showing that Petruchio and his ways have finally tamed Katherine, but what were all his true hidden plans? How did he really “tame” such a shrew?

7

Are you having trouble with a shrew for a wife? Well listen up, because Petruchio is revealing his secrets on how to get them to obey your every command!

Stay tuned for more!

Petruchio announced last month that he would be setting up a ʻschoolʼ and giving lessons to men on how to get their wives to obey them. Well heʼs done that and the school opens tomorrow at 7:00. Petruchio will be teaching everything from getting her to come hither, and getting her to make you a sandwich. Petruchio has high hopes for the school, and the best part is that Katherine has no idea that Petruchio is starting a school. How long can he keep this a secret? How many people will be attending each class? How long are the classes? Find out in this exclusive interview we got from Petruchio.

Question one: Petruchio, what made you decide to start up the PTS in the first place?

Petruchio: Well it all started when I had a bet with my new brother-in-law Lucentio, and Hortensio. We weʼre betting to see whose wife was the most obedient, and I won the bet. Afterwards I realized that my wife Katherine, who had a reputation for being a quote-unquote shrew was more obedient than ever the newly weds. I must have been doing something right, else this would have not happened. I then realized that if I could tame Katherine, then why couldnʼt I help other couples? Where else could I take this newfound talent, I then decided to open PTS.

Question 2: Will you be teaching students yourself? Or are you hiring employees to help you?

Petruchio: I have chosen a select few people to teach some classes for me. They are all well versed in my taming methods and I have complete confidence in their abilities. Of course I myself will be taking the more serious tasks, if someoneʼs wife is exceptionally shrew-like I will be there to help solve the problem.

Question 3: What taming methods did you use on Katherine?

Petruchio: Well when I showed up late to my wedding wearing ridiculous clothes it was to make her think I was doing it our of love, which is why I said: “Is she marrying me or my clothes?” This showed her in a different sort of way that I loved her. Not for anything else but her. I also wouldnʼt let her eat or sleep insisting that she was too good for the food, and the bed wasnʼt good enough for her. She thought I was doing this out of love, while she was obeying me subconsciously. So she began to ask me permission whether things weʼre good enough for her. That way she eventually became permanently obedient with me. One day I was arguing with her whether it was dark or sunny out, even though it was obviously sunny, I insisted it was dark until she agreed with me, this is another mind game to make her always agree with me. Simply getting her to agree with you will plant a small idea in her head that you are always right and that she should be obedient.

Petruchio’s Taming School

Question 4: How are you keeping PTS from Katherine?

Petruchio: Well, at the moment Iʼm using the excuse that Iʼm helping Lucentio study for all the school he missed while trying to win over Bianca, and thatʼs where I am the part of the day Iʼm at PTS. Although Iʼm not sure how long I can keep that up to be perfectly honest. I suppose someday Iʼll have to tell her the truth, though Iʼm not entirely sure how sheʼll take it.

Question 5: why do you think this form of trickery works better than simply commanding them?

Petruchio: Because if they donʼt know theyʼre being tamed theyʼre more likely to do what you wish. If you go right out and start hammering commands into them like thereʼs no tomorrow they will simply just reject your commands getting you absolutely nowhere.

# Remember if youʼre having problems with your wife remember to stop by at Petruchioʼs Taming School as soon as you have time. Itʼs the number one way to get your wife to obey you with a money-back guarantee.

Baptista’s Rule

Below is our Interview with Bianca:Q: Bianca, how do you feel about your father making a new rule about how Katherine has to get married first? Are you jealous in any way?A: I am happy for my sister Katherine, since i can take a break from everybody always trying to impress me with their love, even though i appreciated the attention. Q: Do you think anybody will fall in love with her?A: I think she will find somebody very special someday, someone who can relate to her. Even though sometimes she can seem like a brat and a shrew, deep down she has a nice and soft personality. Finally, after Hortensio, one of Petruchio’s good friends, told him about Katherine, he fell for her. Petruchio had a mission to meet Katherine and propose to her. But things did not go as planned. When Petruchio showed up at Katherine’s door flirting and showing some feelings toward her, she did not take it the right way. They had a major argument about how Katherine did not think that he really loved her, but instead thought he was more a freak. Interview with Petruchio:

Is Baptista not playing favorites anymore? After so many suitors for Bianca, Baptista had forgotten about his horrid eldest daughter Katherine. Now Katherine has to be the one who is married first and not Bianca. Because of this situation, Bianca has to wait longer and longer until she gets married.

Q: How do you feel after you and Katherine met?A: I think that she has doubts about me, but i know we will be together very soon. Even though we have some differences, she will end up falling in love with me. Mark my words. Well, Petruchio seemed to be right, because now Katherine is head over heels for him. Looks like the shrew has been tamed. And since Katherine is now married, Bianca can again be available to marry.

Page 9: "The Italian Herald" By: Bianca P, Sarah W, Sarah F, & Jeff A

9

Who were Bianca’s Suitors and where are they now?

We have the new scoop on Biancaʼs suitors! The following candidates are Hortensio, Gremio, and Lucentio. Who are they you might ask, find out here! Hortensio is an elder man who has lots of money which he thinks will make Baptista think that he is suitable to take his daughterʼs hand in marriage. Hortensio is desperate and overhears Baptista saying that he needs a musical instructor so he disguises himself as ʻLitioʼ a musical instructor to tutor Bianca in hope that he will secretly get closer the her. Gremio is also another elder man who is going against Lucentio but mostly Hortensio. Gremio may be nice but itʼs too bad because he has no game and doesnʼt stand a chance against Hortensio and Lucentio! Finally, Lucentio is a young male who traveled to Padua for his studies but saw Bianca and fell in love, he then also overheard Baptista talking about how Bianca needs a Latin tutor so he disguises himself as ʻCambioʼ the Latin instructor in hope that he will secretly woo her into falling in love with him, but he never thought of how he would tell her the truth about his real identity. Where are they now? What has happened to them? Hortensio and Lucentio have their tutoring sessions with Bianca together. Lucentio tries to tell Bianca his true identity during their tutoring sessions and Hortensio keeps interrupting but Bianca doesnʼt get to Hortensioʼs lesson because she is too into her lesson with Lucentio (Cambio). Tranio who was Lucentioʼs servant also disguises himself as Lucentio and tries to trick Hortensio by showing him how in love Bianca and Lucentio are and that he himself doesnʼt stand a chance with Bianca and then Hortensio thinks the same and backs out from the ʻcompetitionʼ. It is then left with Gremio and Lucentio and since Gremio doesnʼt have a chance Lucentio then is the only one that can claim Biancaʼs love. Does Bianca choose Lucentio? Yes! Bianca chooses Lucentio and falls in love with him even though he lied to her she still loves him enough to trust him and they then get married which then closes off the Minola daughters, they both are married! Hortensio is now wed to his previously widowed wife, and Gremio is still wife-less. Is your relationship like Biancaʼs? Find out in the fun section!

Find out Tranio and Lucentio’s unrevealed plan of wooing Bianca. There’s so much that still hasn’t been revealed.

Throughout all the plans behind the wedding we see that there are many people disguised as something they’re not whether it is to get a girl or just to play a part in a scheme. However, did we ever find out what went on behind the scenes of Tranio and Lucentio’s ingenious plan of wooing Bianca? There’s so much that still hasn’t been revealed. Lucentio was first sent to Padua with his affable servant Tranio by his father Vincentio in order to study and receive a good education. However, once he arrives in Padua he overhears a conversation between Baptista, Katherine, and Bianca and her two sisters. It was then that the sparks flew in the air as Lucentio found his one true love, Bianca. Next we know that Lucentio disguises himself as a Latin tutor named Cambio in order to teach and woo Bianca on Gremio’s (the pantaloon’s) behalf. Lucentio then asks his servant Tranio to disguise himself as the real Lucentio in order to marry Bianca by way of Baptista on the real Lucentio’s behalf. Many people have questioned how Tranio and Lucentio’s methods of disguising a person really works because by switching one’s clothes you cannot change a person’s identity. Duly note that even though Lucentio (Cambio) knows nothing about Latin, he is teaching Bianca in order to get her attention and woo her on his own behalf even though he was supposed to be wooing Bianca on Gremio’s behalf. Lucentio is taking every risk to make sure that he gets his one true love, Bianca. Usually when you’re in love you’ll do everything you can to get that one special person under your spell. The two diligent, disguised tutors Lucentio (Cambio) and Hortensio (Litio) both argue over who shall teach and earn Bianca’s attention first. Bianca than warrants that it is her choice as to who shall teach her first, for how long, and when. Bianca then chooses to be taught by Lucentio first. During Bianca’s lesson Lucentio reads some Latin to Bianca and in between doing so he woos Bianca on his own behalf even though he was supposed to be wooing Bianca on Gremio’s behalf. Simois, I am Lucentio, hic est, son unto Vincentio of Pisa, Sigeia tellus, disguised thus to get your love, Hic steterat, and that “Lucentio” that comes a-wooing, Priami is my man Tranio, regia, bearing my port, celsa senis, that we might beguile the old pantaloon.” - Lucentio (Act 3 Scene 1 pg 111). Later on in this whole charade, we hear that Baptista asks that Tranio (aka Lucentio) make a meeting with his father in order to confirm the dowry offered to Bianca. Due to the fact that the real Vincentio is oblivious to the scheming going on between Lucentio and Tranio, the ingenious Tranio comes up with a plan to find someone to act as Vincentio to verify the dowry offered to Bianca. Tranio and Hortensio then forswear their pursuit of Bianca. Baptista, Tranio (Lucentio), and the merchant (Vincentio) then meet up to assure a sufficient dowry for Bianca they then agree to discuss the matter at Tranio’s (Lucentio’s) house in order to settle the agreement. Vincentio then extemporaneously arrives in Padua to see his son Lucentio. Later on the wedding takes place a Baptista’s house in Padua where Bianca and Lucentio get married. Then all the sudden the real Vincentio extemporaneously shows up at the wedding in search for his real son Lucentio expecting him to be fully educated.

Lucentio’s Guide to Elaborate Schemes

Lucentio has written his own guide teaching people how to performtheir own elaborate schemes. You may remember how he and his new wife Bianca pulled off their own wedding right under their parent’s noses.Or how he snuck his way in to as Bianca’s tutor to first meet her. Well if you have been having similar ideas read this and you might just pull off the scheme of the century. Here is what Lucentio submitted to our newspaper last week.

Step 1, find a disguise: Having a good cover name or disguise can be an essential part of your plan to get access to things you normally might not be able to. But it also helps if someone catches you, you can always pretend you are someone else. And remember no disguise is too ridiculous, to the average person, they might just think you’re weird.

Step 2, find some help: whether its hired help or an old friend its always good to have someone who can fill in for you when you’re supposed to be somewhere. You’re not going to succeed unless you have good people behind you.

Step 3, make a plan: Obviously, without a decent plan there is no point in everything else. Break down each part of the plan into different phases to make sure nothing can possibly go wrong. And remember there will always be something that does go wrong anyways. Remember to be as creative as possible nothing is impossible when you put your mind to it.

Step 4, Practice: practice makes perfect, so don’t forget to practice what you’re going to do, Rehearse what you’re going to say, and be prepared for any situation. Now the second something does go wrong just make sure you are ready for it.

Step 5, Execution: Once you’ve done all of these things you are ready to take on your challenge. Whether you’re trying to woo a girl or you’re finding a creative way to skip class, remember everything you’ve and watch as all the parts of the plan come together, unless of course you went wrong somewhere, in which case good luck to you.
