8/2/2019 The Island of Hope

TheIsland of Hope
"Island in the Sun" blared in
the back round, shooting painful
memories of warmth and sunlight
into her. It had been six long
years of exile to the cold,
unforgiving depths of the sea.

The old, breaking submarine her
only life support. And a lone
guitar her only friend.
The people of the island had
banished her without just cause,
but with fear in their hearts. They
had been loving, kind people
before the war, that sent so many

lives bouncing off the cold, dark
wall of death, but they had
changed into empty, guarded
people. At the beginning of the
war many Islanders had fought
for change with hope of a new
world not plagued with fear and
desperation, but slowly those
hopes died as the war continued

to rage. Then one day a new
hope tried to arise but was muted
with the cold grasp of a fake
reality.
Hope was born to a small
fishing village on the coast of a
big, warm land mass called Rana.
The village were Hope had lived

was happy, cozy and a tight knit
community. Hope used to say
that she was born to two people,
but was parented by a village.
Hope loved living there, but her
ideas were bigger then the village
and she knew someday she
would leave to find a place to
house her dreams where she

could aspire to be whoever and
whatever she wanted to be. Then
one day the time came for Hope
to leave. Burdened with the guilt
of leaving her small village, Hope
sailed into the distance, not
knowing where she was going, or
if she'd get there.
Hope had been battered by the

sea when she arrived at her
unknown destination, the Island.
She arrived to a lively beach filled
with smiling faces and warm
sand. She had stepped from her
small boat unnoticed, she slowly
walked down the beach swerving
the stands of water melon,
coconuts, pineapple, and

mangos. Hope had been
dehydrated and badly sunburned.
She had been walking in a haze
down the beach when someone
noticed something was wrong
with her. The warm islanders had
all gathered round to help the
stranger.

When Hope woke she was
shaded by white clothes, and had
cooling bandages covering the
worst of her sun burned skin. She
had also been hydrated, there
was a bottle of greenish water
that she later found out was
guava juice. Hope sat up with a
little pain and looked around at
8/2/2019 The Island of Hope

what she was sure was her new
home. There were a few wooden
furnishings and flimsy posts that
kept the thin white clothe roof up.
Hope carefully pulled herself up
to see the island. As she
stumbled around the Island she
started to make friends and was
quickly excepted into the

community.
The next few months went by in
a blur of warmth and happiness.
Then the war started.
The war at the main land had
spread to the Island. Many
islanders were killed or shipped
off to be soldiers. The happy

Island Hope had once known
ceased to exist. The Islanders
began to rule by their fear. They
built houses to keep out the
world. There was no longer a
happy beach that new comers
would arrive to, no longer happy
faces. There were just absences
of those who the war had
8/2/2019 The Island of Hope
13/30
claimed, there were those who
were "there" but really their spirits
had been extinguished with the
lives of their kin. There was only
one left with hope, one left with
the drive to fight. Hope. She
would not give up the home she
had come to love, she would not
give up on the people of the
8/2/2019 The Island of Hope
14/30
Island.
Hope had waited for the Island
leaders to rebel, or at least do
something to help the people. But
when she realized that wasn't
going to happen, she took
charge. At first Hope gave little
speeches in attempt to relieve the
8/2/2019 The Island of Hope
15/30
peoples spirits of the dark
hollowness that had claimed
them. The she started giving
bigger speeches until she was
screaming they needed to help
themselves out of this dark age.
On one of the occasions where
Hope was telling the islanders to
fight back an army official from
8/2/2019 The Island of Hope
16/30
the main land was at the island.
After hearing Hopes furious
speeches against the war, he told
the Island ruler that he must
silence Hope or the Island would
face dire consequences. That is
when the unjust exile to the
depths of the see claimed Hope
as its captive.

Now it has been six long, dark
years and the war still rages,
Hope has had enough. The
bombs that are thrown over her
dark sea bed are the only glimpse
of light she gets out side her
submarine. She's ready to see
the sun. And she's ready now. So
8/2/2019 The Island of Hope
18/30
Hope uses the oxygen tank the
islanders left her as a way "out"
like in the stories Hope had heard
of pirates being left on an island
with one gun shot, the oxygen
tank doesn't have enough air to
get her to the surface, just
enough for her to watch her
submarine sink. But what the
8/2/2019 The Island of Hope
19/30
islanders didn't know was that
Hope was amazing with all
animals. You may be wondering
how that would help her get out of
the water, well you may have
heard dolphins are incredibly
smart.
So Hope puts on the old

20/30
oxygen mask and opens the roof
of her submarine and swims out,
with some difficulty, to the water.
Where, she had noticed earlier,
there was a group of dolphins.
Hope found the closest dolphin
and grabbed the fin on its back
and somehow managed to get it
to swim towards the surface.
8/2/2019 The Island of Hope
21/30
Once hope was close enough to
the surface that she could swim in
one breath she let go of the
dolphin, took a huge breath with
the last of the oxygen , took off
the tank and swam to the surface.
When she got to the top of the
water she gulped for air, hers
lungs burning. Hope starts to

22/30
swim towards the Island noticing
how broken it looks. When she
gets to the island she is not
greeted with smiling faces like the
first time she arrived at the Island,
she is not greeted at all. It's as if
the Island has been deserted, but
Hope knows there are people still
there. She puts her hands to her

23/30
mouth and makes a bird like call
that only islanders know, a signal
that was made when the war
started. About ten minutes after
she made the call a few faces,
covered in camouflage, poke out
of the bushes. Slowly Hope
realized one of the faces was the
ruler of the Island, the ruler who
8/2/2019 The Island of Hope
24/30
had banished her. Hope was not
mad at him anymore, she had
long forgiven the act he made
that had changed her life for the
worst. She sees the effect the war
had had on the islanders in their
swollen, red, eyes and their
skinny, tight faces. The islanders
wave her over and lead her to
8/2/2019 The Island of Hope
25/30
their secret hide out.
Once in the hide out no one
asks how she escaped, or
apologizes for her banishment,
they just stare with pleading eyes.
Hope sits down and says "What's
the plan?" No one replies. Hope
sighs and says "I have a
8/2/2019 The Island of Hope
26/30
plan...but it's a long shot"
In the head quarters of the
military command center there is
a stark silence, broken by a huge
boom. People run around, from a
birds eye few they look like ants
scurrying around attempting to
mend the broken walls of their
8/2/2019 The Island of Hope

home. Its the dead of night and in
the cover of darkness the
islanders had gone to the main
land, connected with the little
fishing village where Hope was
born, then sent a warning bomb
into the empty military building
and left. They also left a note to
the military leader saying "This

they think all hope is lost.
