Handling SpanTherm
TheSpanThermteamprovidesacompletedeliveryandinstallationservice(dependantonlocation).Themajorityofourcustomerswillnotbeinvolvedinliftingorstackingunits.Ifthisdoesoccur,thefollowingadviceshouldbeadheredto:
•SpanThermunitsshouldalwaysbeplacedonlevelground •Theunitsshouldbesupportedat4levelpointsatcorners. •Usepurposemadeliftinghooksorchainsateachend. •Unitscanbestackeddirectlyontopofeachotherwithoutusingsupport inbetween.Supportrequiredonlyatbottom.Maximumstackof4unitshigh.

SpanThermprovideacomprehensivegroutingservice,however,whenundertakenbycustomers,thefollowingproceduresshouldbefollowed:

5 Easy Steps
1: Design & Estimating Package TheSpanThermTechnicalTeamisavailabletoadviseregardingthemostefficient structuralflooringsolutionforyourproject,includingtheflooringthermal calculations.Wesimplyrequireafullsetofplansandinreturnweshallprovide afreeestimatingpackagewhichincludesafloordesignlayoutdrawing.
2: Order & Site Survey Onreceiptofyourorder,weissueanorderacknowledgementincludingpayment terms.Weshallagreetotakemeasurementsfromplanorconductasitesurvey (asappropriate).AspartoftheSiteSurvey(on-siteorbytelephone)wecheck siteaccess,blockwallbearings,healthandsafety,vehiclepositionsandobstructions.
3: Design TheDesignTeampreparesadetailedflooringlayoutbasedonthefinaldimensions agreed.Thelayoutisissuedtothefactoryforscheduledproduction.Theflooris manufacturedandloadedinthecorrectsequencetofacilitateefficientinstallation.
4: Despatch TheSpanThermDespatchTeamchecks(bytelephone)withyoursite representative,toensurethesiteispreparedforinstallation.Thechecklistincludes; Siteaccess,hardstanding,clearareaforvehiclesetup,stablebearings(cured blockwork)andwateravailablity.
5: Delivery & Installation TheInstallationTeamfitsandgroutsthefloor.Thistakesapprox.3hours fromstarttofinish(basedona90m2floorarea).

1.TheoverallfloordepthoftheSpanthermsystem is greater than most other ground floormethods,whyisthis?
TheinsulationthicknessontheSpanThermunitisgreaterthanthatusedinmajorityofsystemsandthisistoensurethatthefloorexceedscurrentU-valuerequirements(0.25W/m²K)forgroundfloorconstruction.Thedesignhasbeendevelopedinanticipationofthenewbuildingregulationsduein2013.Theoveralldepthoftheslabcanbeallowedforinconstructionoffootingblock-worklevels.
2.CanSpanthermfloorsystemaccommodate bay windows and other non-90⁰end/bearingformations?
Yes,wecanprovideend-bearingformationstoanyreasonableanglerequired.
3.IsSpanthermBBAcertified?
BBAcertificationhasbeenappliedforandtheprocess,whichcantakeanythingupto12monthstocomplete,isunderway.TheinsulationusedinSpanThermunitsisBBAapproved.
4. How does Spantherm deal with additional appliedloadsotherthanUDL,e.g.wallsbuiltoff,pointloads,etc.?
Architects’drawingswillindicatethelocationandextentofsuchappliedloads.OurengineerswillcalculatethenecessaryreinforcementrequiredandlayoutdrawingswillfacilitatethebearingofsuchloadsthroughproperpositioningofSpanthermunits,normallyplacingtheunit’ssupportbeam(beams)indesiredlocations.
5.DoesSpanthermfloorsystemalwaysrequireaconcretescreed?
No,thisflooringsystemdoesnotrequireascreedstructurally.Ourload/spantablesallowfortheadditionalloadappliedwhenascreedisplacedonlybecauseitisnormallyrequiredonsitetoaccommodatecoveringofpipes,etc.
Whereascreedisnotneededfromasiteperspectivethenfloorfinishessuchastiles,woodenorlaminatefloorsandcarpetwithproperunderlaycanbeplaceddirectlyontoSpanthermunits.Wemustbenotifiedinadvanceifthisisthecasetoensuresurfacefinishandgroutingproceduresaredealtwithaccordingly.
6. Can insulation be exposed to hardcore/fill?
Theremustbeclearancebetweenthehardcore/fillandtheundersideoftheslabtoprovideprotectionforthepolystyreneandpreventdamage.
Becausetheinsulationisshelteredfromsunlight(UV)itisinertandstabletherefore,rotwillnotoccur.AsthereisnonutrientinEPSverminwillnotbeattracted.
7.Isheatlostdownwards,whenunder-floorheatingpipesareplacedontopoftheslab?
Under-floorheatingpipescanbelaidontopoftheslabaspernormalinstallation.Theunder-floorheatingsystemwillheattheconcrete.Concreteprovidesthermalmass,retainingheatandkeepingthefloorwarmerforlonger.Itnaturallyradiatestheheatupwardsasthepolystyreneunderneathactsasaninsulationbarriertokeeptheheatretainedwithintheslab.
8.Whyisthedepthofinsulationincreasedtowardsthemiddleoftheslab?Whynotjustmakeitcompletelyflatandhavegreateramountofinsulation?
TheinsulationontheslabprovidesthegivenU-value.Theslabhasbeendesignedtoprovideaneconomicalsolution,tosatisfyproduction,environmentalandstructuralrequirements.
