The king put Joseph in charge of Egypt. (Genesis 41:41)
Are you all curled up and comfy? Then I’ll begin.
The Clarks were in the garden after their dinner. Twins Leo and Linda took turns on the rope swing at the top end of the garden. Suddenly something dropped out of the sky and landed on a large bush just beside them.
‘What was that?’ asked Leo, as he ran over to the bush.
Linda waited and then decided to follow her brother. To their surprise, underneath the bush was the most beautiful pigeon they had ever seen. But it was absolutely still.‘Is it dead?’ whispered Linda.‘I don’t know,’ Leo answered. ‘I’ll go and get Dad. You keep an eye on the bird.’
Colour the pigeon.
Linda didn’t really want to look at the bird in case it was dead. But she did. And that’s when she noticed that it had a ring round one leg.Just then Dad and Mum came running over.
4
‘What’s doing?’ Dad asked.‘It hasn’t moved,’ said Linda. ‘I hope it’s not dead.’Dad knelt down and looked more closely.‘It’s still alive,’ he told them.
‘What a beautiful bird,’ Mum said. ‘Look at the colours.’Linda, pleased that the bird was alive, knelt down beside it.‘It’s grey and pinky purple and white,’ she told Mum. ‘And it looks so soft.’Dad was thinking hard.‘I don’t think this is an ordinary pigeon,’ he said. ‘I think it’s a racing pigeon that has either lost its way or is exhausted and in need of a rest. I’ll contact the R.S.P.B. and see what they suggest.’‘What’s the R.S.P.B.?’ Leo asked, when Dad was on the phone. Mum explained that it was the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and that there would be someone there who would know exactly what they should do.
‘What did they say?’ asked Linda, as soon as Dad appeared.‘I got a very helpful man,’ said Mr Clark. He said that racing pigeons often land for a rest and, when they’ve rested, they fly off again.’Linda laughed.‘So he’s not dead; he’s just sound asleep!’
‘I think we should give him a name?’ announced Leo.Linda suggested that Softie would be a good name for such a soft looking bird. Leo just laughed at that idea.‘I think we should call him Bullet because he fell into the garden like a bullet. Everyone laughed - even Linda - and agreed it was a good name for the bird.
What name would you have chosen for the pigeon?

Because it was late evening the family put Bullet in the garage for the night to keep him safe from cats. Mum found a good-sized box and Linda put her doll’s cot blanket inside it. Dad laid the sleeping bird on the blanket and placed a dish of water and some bread beside it. When the garage was safely locked for the night, the family went in and had prayers.‘Please make Bullet better,’ Leo prayed. ‘Make him better enough to fly to his home.’That’s what Linda prayed too, but she really wanted to keep the lovely bird though she knew that they couldn’t do that.
Next morning the family couldn’t wait to see if Bullet was alright. On opening the garage door they saw the pigeon up and pecking at the last crumbs of bread. As the bird was very tame and used to humans, it didn’t fly away when Dad, Mum, Leo and Linda arrived on the scene.
What do you think is the best food for pigeons?
As they watched, Bullet walked out of the garage and into the garden, pecking all the time. A few minutes later, flapping his wings, he squawked a thank you and then flew off. They watched until he was just a little speck in the distance.
‘My teacher says that pigeons were sometimes used to carry messages during the war,’ Leo said.‘That’s quite right,’ Dad agreed. ‘The messages were wrapped up tiny and fastened to their legs.’‘God will take Bullet safely home now,’ Linda told the family. ‘I know that because God will answer our prayers.’

‘Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. Someone told him, ‘Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.’ He replied, ‘My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.’ (Luke 8:20-21)

Glenurquhart and Fort Augustus Sunday School held a coffee morning for Project 2014. The event was well attended by both the congregations and by people who live in the area. There were stalls selling plants, toys and home baking.
The splendid sum of £409.50 was raised for Preshal’s Precious Kids.
The photo shows the Glenurquhart and Fort Augustus Sunday School with some friends.

WHEN ARE YOU HAPPY?Tick what makes you happy.
Being with your friends.
Being with your family.
Being at home.
Being away from home.
Being at school.
Being away from school.
Nobody is happy all the time.
Think what it would be like
if you lived in an unhappy home;
if you couldn’t go out to play because where you lived wasn’t a safe place to be;
if your parents had to work long hours and you had to make your own tea when you went home from school most days and then stay in the house all by yourself;
if your dad or mum was on drugs or drunk a lot of the time;
if you were in care and didn’t see much of your family.
PRESHAL’S PRECIOUS KIDSPreshal gives its children some things that are very special.
They have a safe place to play, lots of fun and games, veryinteresting arts, crafts and activities to do. They can talk to their leaders and share things they are excited about or that worry or upset them. And they also learn about the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the best of all friends.

PROJECT 2014
GOVANPreshal is in a part of Glasgow called Govan.There are people living in Govan who are poor because they can’t find work. Some have tried for years to find a job, but haven’t been able to get one.
While there are many good and happy families in the area - loads of them! - there are others who live in real need. There are some boys and girls who are very poor.
Sadly drug and alcohol addiction is a problem. Although there is a big park in Govan it is not a safe place for children to play. Drug addicts leave syringes lying on the ground and they are very dangerous.
What should you do if you see a syringe lying on the ground?
Children love Preshal because they are safe there.
They love the games and activities they do.
They love making music together.
Pray that they will love learning about Jesus and discovering that he loves them.
The money you send this year will go to help Preshal’s Precious Kids. How could your Sunday School raise money for them?

Saul hated the Lord’sdisciples.
Saul headed for Damascus. He wanted to throw the disciples in jail!
Suddenly a bright light from heaven flashedaround him.
A voice said, ‘Saul, Saul, why are youpersecuting me?’ It was the voice of Jesus.
When Saul got up,he was blind!
‘Ask for Saul,’ God told
‘Brother Saul,’ said Ananias. ‘Jesus has sent me.’
Ananias.
‘He is praying.’
From then on Saul preached that Jesus is the Son of God.
When Saul left Damascus he escaped over the city wall at night.

THE SLAVES’ SERVANTIn 1848 William King, a slave owner in North America, set his slaves free. William took his former slaves to Canada where they settled and he did too. Five years later William had a coded message from the Underground Railroad.
Draw your own pictures for the story and send them to the Editor.
18
The Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad was a group of people, many of them Christians, who lived in a number of cities in the United States. They helped slaves who escaped to get to Canada where they would be free and safe.
They had to be very careful because slave hunters kept a special watch on them to try to catch slaves before they made it all the way to Canada.
A boy called Anna
Anna Maria was 12 years old and she had run away from her slave owner and was trying to get to safety. She had nobody to travel with as her parents had been sold to two different owners. Dressed in boy’s clothes, Anna travelled by night to escape the slave hunters and each day she climbed a tree and tried to get some sleep without falling to the ground.
After walked 20 miles in two days, Anna reached Washington. She had been told where the stationmaster of the Underground Railroad lived and she asked him to help her. The man hid her in his attic until he could find a way to get her out of the city without getting caught.
Draw Anna in boy’s clothes sleeping in a tree.

To Buffalo
The stationmaster, who was afraid that the slave hunters and their dogs would find Anna, gave her papers saying she was a boy and the son of a free black man in Philadelphia. Then he asked his friend Dr Still to take Anna to the city of Buffalo.
As soon as she stepped into the carriage, some hunters called out to them.‘What should I do?’ she asked.‘Jump up on to the driving bench,’ she was told.Anna jumped up and held the horses’ reins as if she knewwhat she was doing. She didn’t!
I can’t drive a carriage!
The girl prayed while Dr Still told the hunters that they had to leave right away. Anna flicked the reins and the horses started to move. Her heart was pounding for fear that the hunters would try to stop them ... and because she didn’t know how to drive the carriage!
Would they escape? Will William King be at Buffalo to help Anna?
You’ll find out in next month’s Instructor.
Draw Anna hiding in the stationmaster’s attic.
