Think Tank

Pillar, Column and PostIn common parlance any vertical or upright member , either load bearing or non-load bearing is

called a pillar: _ example Ashok pillar etc

Note: The 24 ft. iron pillar erected by Chandragupta II about 1600 yrs back has withstood

weathering _this is due to highly-advanced ironsmiths with an unparalleled level of knowledge. But in Engineering each structural element is named after their specific Function & Properties

1)Pillar : is a vertical member held at top and bottom. It can be of brick masonry or stone

masonry or of a single stone as in temples. A pillar will take only axial compressive load and will not

resist Bending Moment.

2)Column : is a vertical member held at top and bottom . It will be in RCC or in Structural

Steel or Composite. Column will take axial compression and resist Bending Moment Column

subjected to pure axial load rarely occurs in practice. All columns are subjected to some

moment which may be due to accidental eccentricity or due to end restraint imposed by

monolithically placed beams or slabs Web statement

Steel Columns are called Stanchions either Ι shaped column sections specially made worldwide

for this purpose ; their flanges , webs and fillets are different from those of similar sized Ι beams,

or built up Steel columns

Some times RCC columns may not be held at the top , as in a single column OHT. The column should be carefully designed to take axial compression & Bending Moment caused by Wind Load

3.) Post or Pole : A long, slender, piece of wood or metal or concrete typically used with one

end placed in the ground as a support for something. It is not load bearing . It is used for tying

wire or ropes ; the tension created at both sides must be balanced.

4.) Other Structural Components: A tie, strap, tie rod, eyebar, guy-wire, suspension cables, or

wire ropes, are examples of linear structural components designed to resist tension. It is the

opposite of a strut or column, which is designed to resist compression. Ties may be made of any

tension resisting material. struts can be inclined or horizontal and are generally short in length

as compared to columns. ... Strut is a compressive member of truss. It only experiences normal

axial force (compressive force)

5) Minaret : A slender tower, typically part of a mosque, with a balcony from which a muezzin

calls Muslims to prayer.

6) Tower : A tower is a tall, narrow building, that either stands alone just like Temple tower or

forms part of another building such as a church or castle. A Tower can be of masonry or Steel _

called Pylon eg. Eiffel Tower , Electric Transmission line towers.

7.) Pylon: a tall tower-like structure _ generally of steel lattice work.

Note: The birth of this article is due to an Engineering College Principal ,who teaches

Mechanical Engineering subjects and being one of the few teaching Principals , wanted to know

the difference between Column and Pillar.

He also gave full safety measure to be carried out when handling electrical energy particularly

in villages and in the apartments with the power point presentation. He clearly explained the

GDP(Gross Domestic Product) and said in India the GDP value is 2597.49 billion US dollars in

2017.The National Average per capita electricity consumption is 778.63 Kwh/year. The

installed capacity in India as on 31.03.2017 is as follows:

The indian power sector is the Third largest in Asia after China and Japan. The Power Grid has

projected that by 2025-2026 there shall be around 35 number of 1200 KV sub stations having

100,000 MVA transformation capacity.

What is Energy Conservation

Is it worth to conserve energy

Potential for Energy Conservation

ŸIt means the utilization of Energy available in economical and efficient way to yield maximum

benefit.ŸEnergy conservation does not mean the denial of energy for making life uncomfortable. It only

means that the available energy should be used efficiently.ŸOne unit saved avoids 2.5 to 3 times of fresh capacity addition

To make our - World Safer (Pollution, Ozone etc,..)- Country Brighter, Stronger and to be a Super

Power- Society Healthier and prosperous- Industries / Homes SmarterŸTo prove that everyone of us are very responsible citizens. He also explained the Energy Conservation Act 2001 broadly.

ŸIndia's energy consumption per unit of GDP is higher compared to Japan, US and Asia by 3.7, 1.55

and 1.47 times respectively. This indicates inefficient use of energy but also substantial scope for

energy saving.ŸOne unit of energy saved at the consumer end avoids nearly 2.5 to 3 times of capacity

augmentation due to PLF, auxiliary consumption and T & D losses.ŸThe conservative estimate of potential of energy saving in India is creating nearly 25,000 MW of

new capacity

4. Centre for Urban Water Resources (CURE) finalized their first pilot on the renovation of

Melamadai Oranni which is very close to Vandiyur Tank. 5. CURE team agreed for bi-monthly meet for technical consultation with IEI Members. Proceedings: Centre for Urban Water Resources (CURE) from DHAN Vayalagam (Tank) Foundation, the water

thematic collective of DHAN Foundation with sectoral focus on water management in urban and

semi-urban environments, has taken up new initiative “Revival of Vandiyur Tank system”. It is

focusing on restoring the tank system by redefining the purpose of the Vandiyur tank for the future

through collective planning and action. In this aspect, it organized an expert discussion in

collaboration with the Institute of Engineers (India), Madurai Chapter on 15.12.2018 (Saturday) at

5.30 pm. The purpose of the discussion is to 'generate knowledge pool' of engineering experts on various

possible interventions that can be carried out in Vandiyur Tank and its tank cascade system. The

officials and fellows of Institute of Engineers India (IEI) and retired Engineers from Public Works

Department, Madurai Corporation, TWAD, TN Electricity Board & Community stake-holders part

took. As a welcome note, Mr Lokesh from CURE started off by explaining the CURE's intervention at

Kathianoor tank, Ayravathanallur- which is the first urban tank in the Madurai District to have been

renovated with community participation, which has resulted in farming after 5 yrs. Also, he went on

to elaborate the agenda and expressed the interest of HCL Foundation on the renovation process. Mr.Rajagopal, Chairman of IEI- Madurai Chapter has assured to technically support to the CURE

team in preparing the DPR for reviving the Vandiyur tank cascade system and technical guidance for

researchers involved in the studies that are to be carried out with this regards. He said that the

desilation of the tank should be allowed tothe public with out any charges. He wanted to put an end

to excessive and chaotic de-siltation of tanks by the PWD department. Mr Rajamani, Vice President of IEI- India did lay stress on encroachment eviction, surveying the

tanks, feeder and supply channels in-order to account on the difference in capacity from original

capacity and subsequent deepening and renovating of the channels and tanks accordingly. He also

referred the provision for interning with stipend at IEI. While discussing the redesigning of Vandiyur Lake by redefining the purpose of the urban tank

system Mr Krishnaswamy, Chief Engineer(Retd.) stressed upon redefining the Vandiyur tank as the

major source of drinking water for Madurai Dist. Like Chembarabakam tank for Chennai. While sharing the experiences of expert engineers on Vandiyur Tank Restoration- Mr K.Sakthivel,

City Engineer(Retd.) explained Madurai corporation's proposal and quoted the model of Husain

Sagar, Hyderabad. He explained the proposal of filling the Vandiyur tank by pumping 40 MLD

sewage water, a 5 km long two-lane road all along the bund of the Vandiyur tank and creating an

island in 20 acres at the centre of the tank to improve biodiversity that was estimated to cost about 66

crores under national river water conservation project. He suggested to re-visit this very proposal for

reference. While discussing about the research and pilots; Mr.Muthu Vijayan, Chief Engineer(retd.), suggested

the building of Rainfall-Runoff model for Vandiyur tank cascade system, Estimating the difference

between the current and original capacity of the tanks in this cascade system. It was considered that

the desilting and de-sludging of the Melamadai Oorani in the downstream of the Vandiyur Tank

would give the REVIVAL project team a good start with regards to community participation and was

appreciated by the Gomathipuram Residential welfare Association members.

Mr.Subramanian suggested the dumping of those sludge at the Vellakal solid waste dumping yard.

While, Mr Lokesh queried the dumping at a nearer site and further discussions with Mr.Aneesh

Sekar, Commissioner of Madurai Corporation was to plan on this matter.CURE Team did explore the possibilities to de-sludge and revive the Melamadai Oorani in the

downstream of Vandiyur tank as a part of the pilot. Mr Rajamani, Vice President of IEI assured his

team's visit to the field and technical assistance for doing the same. Mr Ragavan, President of

Gomathipuram Residential Welfare Association assured social support for the same. It was expected that the DPR should comprise details on encroachment eviction, sewage flowing

through drainage channels, Prosopis eviction through community participation, deepening of tanks

and channels to its original capacity; taking into consideration the different factors including those

of socio-economic, hydrological, topographical, civic and the likes. The formal vote of thanks is delivered by Mr R. Narayanasamy, Secretary of IEI.

ŸThe Institution of Engineers (India), Madurai Local Centre a multi disciplinary Corporate body of

Engineers conducted its Annual Get Together Meeting on 31st Dec 2018 at its Silver Jubilee hall at

11.00 AM. About 100 Engineers participated. The meeting was presided by Er.S.Rajagopal, FIE.,

Chairman, Madurai Local Centre. Er.P.Rajamani, FIE., All India Council Member and Former Vice

President, Er.R.Narayanasamy, MIE., Hon. Secretary and Er.M.Savariraj, MIE., Jt. Hon. Secretary

were on the dais. The Chairman called the meeting to order and delivered his welcome address

after the Invocation. In his welcome address he said that the existence of our Institution is not visible

to the Public and even to the Practicing Engineers. we must involve our self in formulating and

implementation of various Projects executed for the Public and give solution to the Solid waste and

waste water Management in the Industry and Local Bodies and also in implanting Water

management, Energy conservation and Pollution free environment effectively. Also to reduce

unemployment Problem among Engineering Graduates. He requested the Engineers present here

to offer their suggestion. He informed the audience that our Madurai Local centre has adjudged as

Best Local Centre in India for the year 2017-18 and the award was presented by the President in the

annual General meeting held at Udaipur on 23rd December and exhibited the Shield and the

certificate and in addition a cash award of Rs.50,000/-. He requested the Engineers present and the

committee Members to extend their full cooperation and support to him to further Improve the

activities of this centre.Ÿ Ÿ Then he invited Er.A. Durairaj, FIE., Past Chairman and Former Member Generation of the

TNEB., to offer his suggestion. Er.Durairaj said that we are conducting a lot of Lecture meetings and

number of Seminars, but the participation of our members is very less comparing to our strength.

Unless our members participate in large number the benefit of the updating the technical exposure

and Professional development could not be achieved. He said our Present Chairman will take

suitable action to increase our Membership strength further and lead the centre in a better manner.Ÿ

Ÿ Prof. D.Sankaramurthy, MIE., Former Principal, Tamilnadu Polytechnic and the Co-opted

Member to the committee said in the case of Doctors the Medical Graduates are permitted to start

their practice only after their registration in the Medical council. But we do not have such Gove

registration. Even the newly started Architectural degree holders are also given such registration by

the ACI. We must also get such approval from the Government. Further the Tamilnadu Polytechnic

got the approval from the Government and was conducting classes for AMIE students since then he

was the course director in the Poly Technical and in this centre also he is conducting the AMIE course

as Director. But due to increase of Private Engineering Colleges and Part time courses, the student

studying AMIE has reduced and Govt of India has also directed to stop admission to the AMIE after

May 2013 and the case in the court. However due to the quality and standard of the AMIE exams,

Sstudents are participating in this course. On the other hand number graduate are jobless because

the present graduate Engineers are said to be non employable. But the AMIE course is conducted

only for the Diploma holders working in the Engineering field and it does not create unemployment

among AMIE Engineers and they also create a expertise Engineer Society than the fresh graduate.

He said we have student chapter in various Engineering colleges to share our expertise with them

and help them. In addition we must organise a meeting of the H.RS of the Industries and assess the

emolyabilty requirement for their Industry and help the graduate engineer to develop the required

skill in addition to their degree.

We must also arrange for a get together of the Student chapter co-ordinator and Advisors of the

Engg. College and Polytechnic Colleges and help them in conducting skill development activities to

their students. He also requested to Invite the Industries and involve them in the research

development activities by entrusting Industry oriented Projects to the students and the staff working in

the colleges. By this both the Institution and the Industry will get benefitted.

Er.A.Jaffer Sadiq Babu, MIE., Managing Director of the Garment Industry and committee

member said that we must conduct job fair and arrange to get more employment in Local Industry

and work for the career development of the working Engineers.

Prof. Dr.P. Udayakumar, Placement Officer and Head of the Dept of Mechanical Engineering in

K.L.N. College of Engineering and the committee Member of IEI listed out the achievements during

this year and activities to be programmed for 2019 as below. He said during 2018 one of our

corporate Member was nominated as Vice President of IEI, in all India level. Our centre was

adjudged Best Local Centre for the year 2017-18. we also got the Best Engg. College Student

Chapter award for KLN college of Engineering Student Chapter and Best Polytechnic College

Student Chapter award for Arasan Ganesan Polytechnic College Student Chapter. This year,

Engineers Day was celebrated in a grand manner in which the collector of Madurai District who is

also an Engineer participated and number of Eminent Engineers were also participated and

delivered lectures in our various meetings and also in the Seminars conducted in various colleges.

The All India President of IEI Er. Sisir Kumar Banerjee along with Immediate President Er. Navin B.

Vasoya visited our centre and inaugurated the Guest rooms constructed in our centre. Then he

explained the activities to be programmed . As the first being to increase our membership strength to

1.5% of the All India Strength which had gone down after the formation of new centres at Tirunelveli

and Kanyakumari, trifurcating our centre. This requires to add 1000 more members this year. This

is easily possible if we enroll all the new graduate coming out of the colleges, for which we must start

Student Chapters in all colleges and give them training to make them employable. We must also

create our link with the professional engineers working in Industries and get their support and make

them involved in our technical activities and also but conducting Industrial cum Job fair. He said we

must involve in social activities such elimination of Plastic, educating the public about the benefits of

Rainwater harvesting, planting of trees and Energy Conservation etc. He also said that he had come

to understand that this centre had already conducted an Industrial and scientific exhibition in a

grand manner at Thmukkam grounds in its early years and similar programme shall also be

conducted and the eminent Industries, Institution such as IISc and IITs should requested to participate

and share their innovation with the public and Industries. He said as a first step Chairman has

directed him to conduct the meeting of the Students Chapter co-ordinators/Advisors of all the

Engineering colleges in our area on 12th Jan 2019. and he will be making the arrangement for this.

Then Er.K.Muthuraj, FIE., Former Mill Manager, Madura Coats and Now the Director of

Madurai Meenakshi Matriculation and Higher Secondary School and committee Member of this

centre said that he had coined a word as 3w3E3S which make the students to remember easily the

important thing such as Waste, Water, Electricity, Environment, Elastic and Plastic etc etc. He said that

he can formulate projects for public awareness on digital technology by training them in use of

computer in rural areas involving computer companies like Dell.

Er.N.Sivasubramanian., FIE., Senior Scientist and Former Chief General Manager, ISRO and

committee Member said we have lot of societal problems which can be solved by engineering

invention. He cited the problem of fire work in Sivakasi which has made 85000 people jobless and

many Industries closed. It requires development of pollution free detonators such as Barium Nitrate

based chemicals suitable for manufacturing green crakers. The Engineering colleges should come

forward to work on such projects involving their students and staff. Already CECRI, Karikkudi is on

the job in this direction and we can get projects from them. Another area is developing Bio Plastic

which environmentally safe. But we must create it in a cost effective manner as replacement for the

plastic. The next being Wastewater management involving every user to recycle his own water for

reuse, staring from Industry and group of houses. Sea water desalination has also can be done at a

cost of Rs.5 per litre such projects had already been developed and it is required to take such project

to the public in a cost effective manner. Such rearch will benefit the society and the country and if the

institution like IEI come forward to encourage such projects and patternise certain design, IEI'S

name will come out and known to the country.

Er.V.Muthuvijayan, MIE., Former Addl. Chief Engineer/ PWD and our corporate Members

said we must concentrate on Membership growth and involve other Engineering association such

Water Resource Management, by conducting our technical activities jointly. Prof.K.R. Krishnamoorthy.FIE., Former Scientist from ISRO and the HOD of the Engineering

College said we are talking much about the Industry, Institute interaction in all our meeting and CII

and MADISSIA had also arranged for such meetings and the outcome is not encouraging. Hence the

Industry should really come forward in formulating the curriculum required for them in association

with Institutions and give training to the students in their Industry to make them employable.

Er. E.Ramakrishnan, AEE/PWD said that we must extend our activity in skill development such

as occupational safety, Foreign Direct Investment and Water management. And also in creating

awareness to the public in Lake and RiverMaintenance such clean Vaigai River and Vandiyur tank etc.

Er.A.BaskaranMIE,Practicing Civil Engineer and Valuer said that he was originally science

graduate and Passed AMIE. AMIE syllabus is very tough than the Engineering syllabus and the AMIE

degree holder are more expertise than the graduates, since they are studying while practicing. Now

he is a Postgraduate in Structural Engineering,an expert in Madurai in Rehabitation of Buildings and

handling classes for PG student in Anna University besides doing valuation. But the IBBI has not

recognized the AMIE for appearing for the Registered Valuer Examination. He also approached this

centre and informed the Vice President also. As there was no immediate relief he contacted the

Chairman of Association of consulting civil Engineers who got the approval for AMIE students for

Valuation Examination. Further he said getting FIE from IEI is also tedious and he could not even

reply for the discrepancies informed to him. Hence requested to make the system easy for the

Practicing Engineers.

Er.A.K..Rajadurai, FIE, Former Chief Engineer High ways said we must improve our

communication among us by creating Twitter, Face Book and Whatsapp groups.

Page 22: The Institution of Engineers (India) › images › newsletter › E-News_jan2119.pdf · cv cv mr.a.k.rajadurai velpandian 1/715,kambar street, bharathnagar, tiruppalai,madurai-625014

Er.R.Ramakrishnan, FIE., Former Chief Engineer Tamilnadu water and Drainage Board said

we must insist on execution of the sanctioned scheme for clean Vaigai by installing sewage treatment

Plants at various places where sewage is let into the River and reuse the water for filling tank along

with flood water. The flood water should not be let out as waste by surplus sing tank. By desisting the

tank in an effective manner the surplus water during flood could be stored to increase the ground

water table.

Er.Suriyakumar also gave his suggestion to increase the visibility of IEI.At last Er.P.Rajamani, Former Vice President consolidated the points and said that everyone must

know that IEI was originally registered under company act in the year 1920 and was Inaugurated at

Madras . The HQ was later shifted to Calcutta. Now we are about to celebrate our centenary year.

Our present President is from Tamilnadu Er.T.M.Gunaraja who is also our AMIE alumni. We have

about 2 lakhs Engineers enrolled as Members in various 15 Engineering Divisions. IEI was accorded

Royal Charter in 1935 by the British Empire and is still valid. We have got Ethics control Board to take

action against the misdeeds of the Engineers registered with us. The Ministry of Company affairs has

also communicated to IEI in 1969 that since IEI has been accorded Royal Charter, they are scoring

out our name from Registration under company act. Today we are full pledged corporate body

according Chartered Engineer certificate with Registered number which is the requirement for a

practicing Engineer. Our' s is also a recognized as a Research and Development institution by the

Govt. When the Engineers Bill was introduced in Parliament, the than Minister for irrigation

Er. K L.Rao pointed out that IEI has already been accorded Royal Charter and hence the Bill was

withdrawn. But due to formation of different group of Engg. Associations and Institutions, they are

insisting for a separate bill which will make them to be in bar with IEI. The mushrooming of Private

Engg. Colleges have made the AICET to direct all the Institution conducting AMIE by themselves to

stop admission from May 2013. Besides IEI, there are 7 other institutions conducting AMIE exams.

As we are already approved by Royal Charter to develop Engineering Science in India and to

conduct Examination and award degrees for the Practicing Engieers as career development, accord

accreditation in all branches, We have filed a writ petition in the Delhi High court and got stay order

and the case is still pending. The AICET also issued instruction not to recognize the AMIE degree

accorded to those joined after their date of notice May 2013 only and not those got the degree

before the date. But without understanding, the IBBI had not included AMIE in their eligibility for

registering as Registered valuers. IEI has also made immediate representation based on which order

has been issued even though it is delayed. IEI is also issuing Professional Engineers Certificate and

International Professional Engineer certificate as a representative of Govt. of India in International

Professional Engineers Association under Washington Accord., which is valid in all the counties

signed in washing to accord.

In the area of Membership growth we request the Engineers to become members of IEI to

develop their carrier only. But they ask us to explain what is the benefit of joining in IEI. They are not

bothered about their career advancement. Hence we have to educate them of the necessity of carrier

advancement for an Engineer in their field by attending the technical meeting and seminars etc

which is organized at national and international level. Knowing the ignorance about IEI and its

activity, we are approaching him and requesting him to become the member.

Page 23: The Institution of Engineers (India) › images › newsletter › E-News_jan2119.pdf · cv cv mr.a.k.rajadurai velpandian 1/715,kambar street, bharathnagar, tiruppalai,madurai-625014

Page - 23

Further some of the members are interested in using the FIE,MIE and AMIE as degree to their name

as they are proud of their additional degrees. Everybody wants to acquire the highest degree and

thereby to project themselves in the society. But IEI has fixed the qualification, experience and status

and without satisfying these requirement it will accord the Membership as a Fellow. To become a

fellow, one must be a graduate and must have an experience of 20 Years and have worked at a

management level of not less the Superintending Engineer cadre in the Govt. dept or worked as

associate professor in the Engg. College. As a private practitioner, it is difficult to judge his position.

Hence it is fixed that he must have earnings to pay income tax of Rs 5lakhs. to attain the position of

expert. But an Assistant Engineer of a Govt. department having 30 years of experience in the same

cadre will not be considered since he has not attained the required eligibility. But somebody might

have come across somebody have got Fellowship due to wrong certificate, in such cases if the truth is

proved the FIE will be withdrawn and action will be taken against him by the Ethics control Board. He requested all the member here should come forward and give suggestion on the latest

topic in which the Technical activity such as Lecture meeting, Seminars and visits to be arranged.

Every member having interest shall come forward to join with the committee members in organizing

the events since it cannot be done by a single individual. Your participation will give you exposure

and your contribution will be beneficial to the society. He also explained various research grants

sanctioned by IEI for the Final year Student level, Post graduate level and the Research Scholar level

and also internship fees paid to the scholars. He also said earlier all Govt. departments, Engg. Institutions have added IEI in their advisory

committees. But the representative of the IEI deputed as an expert registered their names in the

concerned advisory committee and become advisor for their life time in place of the name of IEI

representative. Thus no department have the name of IEI in their council and at present they

nominate experts themselves without the consultation with IEI. Further he also said the Expert members in IEI should join together and we must have the

expert committee to offer our suggestion to the Govt. and Local Body, Institutions and Private

companies in preparation of new projects and implementation of the new Policies etc., whether they

sought our opinion or not.Our valuable suggestions and guidance will always be respected if we offer it voluntarily.

He cited an incident that recently, Dhan foundation approached us for an expert opinion on

Vandiyur lake Project. But we found it difficult in inviting the experts since we do not have an expert

Panel containing list of Engineers on latest Engineering topics and Projects. However on that day we

were able to invite our members availble and give them guidance, which they said that it was useful.

Hence requested all the members to come forward to form such panel of experts to work towards

betterment of the society.

The Chairman thanked Prof. K.R. Krishnamoorthy for voluntarily coming forward to form a

communication expert group and to start twitter, face Book and whatsapp group for our centre and

to maintain them. The chairman expressed his sincere thanks to the members for their suggestion.

The Hon. Secretary Er.R.Narayanasamy delivered vote of thanks and thanked the Engineers

who have come forward and gave their suggestion for the betterment of our centre and for serving to

the society. Also requested their continued cooperation. The meeting was adjourned by the

Chairman after National Anthem

Natural solutions can reduce global warmingUS forests, wetlands, and agricultural lands could absorb a fifth of greenhouse gas pollution - equivalent to emissions from

all US vehiclesDate:November 14, 2018Source:Nature ConservancySummary:A new study found that 21 percentof the United States' greenhouse gas pollution (1.2 Pg CO2e year)

could be removed through enhanced management of forest, grassland, agricultural, and coastal

areas. An offset at this level would be the equivalent to pollution from every single US car and truck on

the road.

In the US nature has the potential to remove 21 percent of the nation's carbon pollution -- equivalent to

removing emissions from ALL cars and trucks on the road...and then some.Credit: The Nature ConservancyRestoring the United States' lands and coastal wetlands could have a much bigger role in reducing

global warming than previously thought, according to the most comprehensive national assessment to

date of how greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced and stored in forests, farmland, grasslands,

and wetlands.

Forth Coming Events

WHAT IS NEW?

Page 25: The Institution of Engineers (India) › images › newsletter › E-News_jan2119.pdf · cv cv mr.a.k.rajadurai velpandian 1/715,kambar street, bharathnagar, tiruppalai,madurai-625014

The peer-reviewed study in Science Advances from The Nature Conservancy and 21 institutional

partners found that nature's contribution could equal 21% of the nation's current net annual

emissions, by adjusting 21 natural management practices to increase carbon storage and avoid

greenhouse emissions. The study is the first to include the climate benefits of coastal wetlands and

grasslands in a comprehensive mix along with forests and agriculture.

In October the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change special report called for global action

immediately to limit warming to 1.5?Centigrade (approximately 3? Fahrenheit) to avoid the most

damaging climate change impacts. This new study highlights how, and which, natural solutions in

the United States offer the most promise to help limit temperatures below that 3? Fahrenheit goal.Joe Fargione, Director of Science for The Nature Conservancy, was the study's lead author: "One of

America's greatest assets is its land. Through changes in management, along with protecting and

restoring natural lands, we demonstrated we could reduce carbon pollution and filter water,

enhance fish and wildlife habitat, and have better soil health to grow our food -- all at the same time.

Nature offers us a simple, cost-effective way to help fight global warming. In combination with

transitioning to zero carbon energy production, natural climate solutions can help protect our

climate for future generations.”

Lynn Scarlett, Chief External Affairs Officer for The Nature Conservancy and former Deputy

Secretary of the Department of the Interior, spoke to practical elements of the study's findings: "An

ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so we should reduce carbon pollution where we can.

But we also need to put natural solutions to work as a tool to insulate ourselves from global warming.

This study provides good news that making investments in nature will make a big difference, while

offering the potential for new revenue to farmers, ranchers, foresters, and coastal communities at

the same time.”

Of the 21 natural solutions analyzed, increased reforestation (the planting of trees) emerged as the

largest means to achieve greater carbon storage, equivalent to eliminating the emissions of 65

million passenger cars. Other high-performing forest solutions include allowing longer periods

between timber harvest to increase carbon storage; increasing controlled burns and strategic

thinning in forests to reduce the risk of megafire; and avoided loss of forests from urban sprawl. The study identified a maximum of 156 million acres that could be reforested, 304 million acres

where forest harvest rotations could be extended, and at least 42 million additional acres of forests

that would benefit from fire risk reduction treatments. In addition, almost a million acres of forest are

being converted to non-forest habitat a year, largely due to suburban and exurban expansion, which

could be addressed through better land use planning. The study also finds that urban reforestation

can add important carbon storage benefits.

"Planting trees and improving the health of existing forests will be a deciding factor in whether we are

able to get ahead of the climate curve," said Jad Daley, CEO of American Forests. "This

breakthrough analysis clarifies the highest impact actions for keeping our forests as a growing and

resilient carbon sink and the potential scale of climate benefit."Grasslands are underappreciated for their carbon storage opportunity. Grassland is being lost at a

rate of over one million acres per year. When grassland is converted to cropland, about 28% of the

carbon in the top meter of soil is released to the atmosphere. This trend could be reversed by re-

enrolling 13 million acres of marginal cropland in conservation programs and restoring them to

provide habitat and storage of carbon in the soil.

Page 26: The Institution of Engineers (India) › images › newsletter › E-News_jan2119.pdf · cv cv mr.a.k.rajadurai velpandian 1/715,kambar street, bharathnagar, tiruppalai,madurai-625014

Page - 26

Existing croplands have an important role to play. Farmers can optimize their nutrient application,

saving money and avoiding emissions of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. Farmers can also

plant cover crops, which suck carbon out the atmosphere and return it to the soil during times of the

year when fields would normally be bare."Farmers are some of our best land stewards, and Danone North America is partnering with farms

across the country to find climate solutions through our soil health initiative. Improved nutrient

management, cover crops, and crop rotations are examples of practices that can help reduce GHG

emissions and over time improve a farm's bottom-line. Farmers and the food industry depend on a

predictable climate, so it's important to work together to reduce the risks of climate change." said

Chris Adamo, Vice President Federal & Industry Affairs at Danone North America.Natural solutions can be found under water as well. An estimated 27% of tidal wetlands have been

disconnected from the ocean, increasing the release of methane. Reconnecting tidal wetlands to the

ocean virtually eliminates those methane emissions, and also restores fish habitat important for

coastal communities."Shellfish growers make a living on the water and have witnessed salt marshes losing productivity

due to freshwater inundation. Not only does this damage important waters and increase emissions,

but it also harms their ability to make a living growing oysters, clams, mussels and other species that

support many coastal communities and other important stakeholders. By restoring salt marshes, we

can help shellfish farmers, wholesalers, retailers and restaurants and the climate all at the same

time," said Davis Herron, Director, Retail & Restaurant Division, Lobster Place, spokesman for the

Shellfish Growers Climate Coalition. Not only do natural climate solutions have strong benefits for personal enjoyment, healthier water,

air, wildlife, and soil, many are quite affordable. As states and the federal government evaluate rules

and markets for greenhouse gas emissions, these low-cost reductions from natural solutions offer

the United States a powerful tool to address a warming planet.Story Source:
