Visiting senior living communities is very exciting! You can get a feel for what your life there would be like, and see firsthand how their amenities and services would enhance the quality of your life. Talking to residents will give you a sense of the people and culture, and help you decide if a community is right for you.

Use this checklist to help you evaluate each community. Take notes and write down questions you want answered. Ask about the stability of the community and the organization behind it.

With each visit, be sure you’re always greeted, shown every area of the community and have all your questions answered. It’s easier to make a decision when you have all the information you need!

LOCATIONLocation is important because you want to make sure the community’s surroundings are something you’ll enjoy for years.

Is the community in a central and easily accessible location?

Are conveniences located nearby?

Does the landscaping look well maintained?

Are access roads to different parts of the community well cared for?

Is there easy access to the highway?

Is there a university, college or community college close by?

Is there ample parking? A garage? Is covered parking available?



STAFFPay attention to the staff as you walk around. Are staff members eager to help you and provide answers to questions?

How are staff members interacting with the residents — do they know their names?

Are they approachable and eager to help?



ATMOSPHERETake a close look at the interior and exterior of the building and the feeling you get while walking around. This could be your new home — does it feel that way?

Is there a lot of natural light in the residences?

Are the common areas clean and free of clutter?

Is the noise level appropriate in the common areas (quiet, loud or just right)?

Are the rooms, halls and buildings easy to navigate?



AMENITIESThere are different amenities and benefits offered at each senior living community. Some will probably be more important to you than others. Which benefits stand out to you and get you excited about the community?

Do they offer flexible dining options? Is there a patio or rooftop terrace for outdoor dining?

What kind of variety can you expect when it comes to food choices?

Are visiting family members allowed to use your meal plan?

Can residents have private cars?

Is there a fitness center, pool, spa, salon, library, convenience store, etc., on site?

Are computers available for resident use?

What maintenance is provided inside and outside the residences?



ACTIVITIESEveryone enjoys different levels of activity to fill their social calendars; it’s all about personal preference. The community most likely offers a variety of activities for you to choose from; some you know you’ll enjoy and others you may have never tried.

How full is the monthly calendar of events? Are there multiple options every day?

Are spiritual services held on community grounds? Is there a full-time chaplain?

Is the fitness equipment up to date? Is there a pool? Are there rooms

for group fitness classes?

Are there individual as well as group activities?

Are there walking trails? A dog park?



SECURITY & SAFETYIt’s important to get to know your surroundings before moving into a senior living community. Knowing the safety features of the community is helpful. Keep these things in mind while walking around the community.

Is there someone available 24/7, such as a front desk clerk or security officer?

Does the community have a severe weather plan?

What emergency response system is available inside the residences?

LIVING SPACEWhen you’re considering moving out of your own house and into a senior living community, it’s imperative to be very detailed in your evaluation to make the decision-making process easier. This could be your new home, so it should feel warm and welcoming to you!

Are there varying floor plan options (1-, 2-bedroom, studio apartments, villas)?

Is space allotted for storage?

Does each residence include appliances? Which ones?

Is there ample closet space?

Is laundry access within the residences or in a common area?

Do the residences have balconies or patios?



RESIDENTSGetting to know new people can be really fun. As you’re visiting a community, see if you can get a feeling of what it would be like to live there and who your neighbors would be. You should get a sense of belonging and camaraderie.

Are they interacting and engaging with you and one another?

COMFORT LEVELFollowing your instincts while visiting a community is an excellent way to know whether you think you’ll fit in as a resident. A feeling of anticipation for finding out more is a good indication the community may be just what you’re looking for!
