Back to School Safety Tips to Protect Your FamilyAccording to the Texas Department of Family

and Protective Services, “there is no Texas law that defi nes a specifi c age at which a child may be left home alone”. It further states that several factors should be considered before leaving a child alone, at home:

• the age, emotional maturity & capability of child;• layout & safety of the home, play area, etc.;• neighborhood circumstances, hazards, risks;• the child’s ability to respond to illness, fi re,

weather, or other emergencies; and• whether the child has a mental, physical, or

medical disability.

“The number of children left unsupervised, the accessibility to other responsible adults, the length of time or frequency with which the child is left alone and the child’s knowledge of the parent’s whereabouts are additional relevant factors.” - Texas Department

of Family and Protective Services

Zach Upton with the San Angelo Police Department

Community Services Division reminds students to work with parents to develop and follow house rules and personal safety measures when cooking or answering the telephone. Use passwords that only you and other trusted adults know so that you can identify strangers. He also suggests practicing safe fi re safety habits and developing a fi re escape route.

In addition, Offi cer Upton suggests that students be aware of weather conditions and know how to react should severe weather threaten the home. How about First Aid Safety? Children that stay home alone should also know basic fi rst aid and where to fi nd supplies.

Practicing for various situations is the best way to prepare your family should an emergency arise.

WHAT CAN ENER-TEL DO TO

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY?

A home security system is one important way to protect your family, but a system that is not monitored won’t do the job as it should.

Take advantage of new technology that keeps you informed. If your alarm is tripped, our Central Station will call the home and notify the proper authorities. If your child is home alone, our monitoring station will be in contact with your child while police are in route.

For additional peace of mind, you can be notifi ed via text message or e-mail when the child enters the home and reactivates the alarm, ensuring they are safely inside.

Video verifi cation is also available to accompany any alerts so that you may verify anyone entering the residence. Your system can be monitored using either your smartphone, notebook or desktop computer.

Cameras that are strategically placed can also monitor your child’s behavior while you are away. Perhaps they are watching TV or playing video games instead of working on homework.

Call our residential sales team today to fi nd out

more ways to protect your family.
