Help Others/Give Back. You can also accomplish this resolution using your local

library. First, you could volunteer your time by becoming a "Friend " of the library.

"Friends" get to experience the joy of giving back while also enjoying a few perks

exclusive to members. Visit the library for more information on how to join. Maybe

you could donate those books you’ve been collecting or videos you don’t watch any-

more. Perhaps you would like to make a monetary donation so the library can expand

its collections or services offered. Want your donation to be anonymous? Use the

donation box found at the circulation desk of both the Laurel and Ellisville locations.

New Year’s Resolutions

The Library Staff Recommends…

Your Heart’s Desire

Melody Carlson’s Christian novella, Your Heart’s Desire, chronicles the life of a young widow and

her son as they navigate life in a new world. After the death of her husband, Caroline Marshall and her

son move in with her sister’s family to start a new life. Caroline finds temporary

employment at a local chocolate factory.

Throughout the course of the novella, we see Caroline come out of her

shell, and she allows herself to feel again. She makes new friends, as well as a

few enemies, but in the end love wins and romance ensues.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick, light-hearted read.

Set in the 1940’s, it is the perfect picture of classic Americana. The author trans-

ports the readers to a simpler place in time all while maintaining a relatable,

modern feel.

Your Heart’s Desire is a perfect read for Valentine’s Day or any time of year.

Review by: Sarah Robinson-Rice, Circulation Clerk

It’s a brand new year: the time we all try to implement changes, improvements, and overhauls to our

lives by what is commonly referred to as our New Year’s resolutions. This year, let the library help you

keep your resolution by arming you with one of the most important weapons you can have …. knowledge.

According to an article by author Albrecht Powell on the website About.Com, some of the top New Year’s

resolutions (along with my suggestions on how your local library can help you keep them) are:

Fit in Fitness/Tame the bulge. The library is full of information that can help you get into better

shape. We offer books on fitness, work-out videos and even exercise video games on everything from

yoga and tai chi to standard aerobics. We also have cookbooks with helpful low-fat and specialized

recipes to help you prepare delicious and nutritious meals for you and your family.

By: Christy Boney, Circulation Manager

More time with family and friends. The Library is a great place to keep this resolution! First of all,

every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:00 a.m. your child can join us at story-time where they can also create

a fun craft, Throughout the year, we also sponsor different family friendly events varying from free

movies, costume parties ,Christmas open house (Santa joins us!) and our popular Summer Reading

program. As an added bonus, these events are always free to you!

Ellisville Public Library News

I recently attended a workshop sponsored by the Mississippi

Library Commission on Copyright Laws. Copyright affects us all in the

world of family research.

For instance, works published before 1923 are known as public

domain publications. Public domain works can be used by anyone

however, no one can own them. These works may be modified, copied

or adapted to fit your needs, but be sure to always give credit where

credit is due and cite the name of the author’s original work.

However, copyright laws protect other works used in

family research. Works published after 1923, but before

1978 are protected for 95 years from the date of publication.

Works published after 1978 are protected for the life of the

author plus 70 years. If the author dies, the estate and the

heirs of the author inherit all the rights. If the author or date

of death is unknown, the copyright lasts for 120 years from

the date of creation.

If you are interested in finding out more information

on copyright rules and regulations, go to
