Point Catholic Leaf Raking
Point Catholic stu-
dents want to give
back to you! Holy
Spirit parishioners
have been generous
and supportive of
Campus Ministry.
Now is our time to
return that hospitality
and outpouring of love through service. On Saturday
October 16th, Point Catholic would love to rake your
yard! We had a great time doing it last year and are look-
ing forward to doing it again! If you or a family member
are in need of your yard being raked this year, please let
us know! Students will come with supplies, smiles and a
treat to show our appreciation for you! Email Emily our
Student Social Justice Coordinator at es-
[email protected] or call the parish office to let us
know you are interested by sharing with us your name,
address and a phone number to reach you at. We look
forward to growing our connections between students
and parishioners with this simple act of service during
this challenging time.
“The Inside Story” 2nd Edition
We’re bringing back this series and inviting some of our
amazing parish members to share the story of their
faith. However, this year there’s a new
twist - our presenters will talk about
what keeps them engaged in their Cath-
olic faith and will reveal some of the big
questions they hold in their hearts that
they hope we may tackle together.
Offering his “Inside Story,” on Sunday,
October 10th
is UWSP Senior and Point
Catholic’s very own Peter Vande Hey. Peter characteriz-
es himself as “intensely curious;” others characterize him
as full of life and love. Come and enjoy his thoughts and
questions about God, the meaning of existence, and our
place in the universe. Don’t miss this wonderful conver-
sation which begins at 9:15 AM in Spirit Hall.
Dear Holy Spirit Parish:
“Let the Children come to me….” (Mark 10:14)
As we hear in this Sunday’s Gospel, this beautiful scene of Jesus’
welcoming and embracing children immediately follows his teach-
ing on divorce. The commitment a father and mother make to each
other is the foundation of the child’s life. To love a child is to pro-
vide them a safe, stable, supportive environment in which to grow. This is also
true of a parish family. Our commitment to one another as a family creates the
safe, stable, supportive environment in which people grow to be like Christ.
Making commitments is getting rare in our culture, whether it be marriage, work,
or faith. It leaves us in a much less safe, stable and supportive world. Renewing
your commitment to be a member of Holy Spirit Parish by filling out your
“Respond to the Spirit” packet, makes sure real community with all of its blessings
continues to grow here.
Encouraging information came to light after we published our Annual Report.
Year 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021
# of households in the parish 1113 1005 969 954 872 840
# who financially support the parish 784 743 636 673 676 694
As you saw in the annual report and again here, we have continued to decline in
the number of households these past six years. The encouraging new news is in
the next line. The number of people who have been financially supporting the
parish has stopped declining and in 2018 began increasing. I give credit for the in-
crease this last year to JC of the FC and his informative presentations and the
Stewardship Committee that supported him. But the trend over the last four
years I would ascribe to people believing in the direction the parish is moving.
If you have filled out your Respond to the Spirit packet and turned it in already….
Thank you! If you haven’t yet because you just haven’t found time, we’ll be grate-
ful for when you can. But if you haven’t yet because you are not sure whether you
want to get involved or not…. Please! Help us build a more safe, stable and sup-
portive community! Deepen your commitment by choosing one or two ministry
opportunities described on the Time and Talent Sheets in the packet.
There is much to look forward to this month of October. Next Sunday our “Inside
Story” series will pick up again after an 18 month Covid hiatus. The theme for
this fall will be: Why I am Catholic. Next Sunday, after the 8:00am Mass, Peter
Vande Hey, a senior at UWSP with a double major in Data Processing and Philoso-
phy will be our speaker. Come and hear what an intelligent young adult man
builds his faith on.
Thursday evening Oct. 14th
our beloved Fr. Dennis Lynch will be speaking in Spirit
Hall and online about Pope Francis’ history changing letter: Laudato Si. The name
translates “Praise be to you, my Lord” and is a quote from a canticle of St. Francis.
In it Pope Francis explains why caring for the environment is a deeply Catholic
and spiritual matter.
On the weekend of Oct. 16 & 17. Fr. Dodge will be bringing students with him
from UW La Crosse. He will speak at all of the Masses. They will be available after
Masses to answer questions about the FOCUS Missionaries they have at the New-
man Center in La Crosse. They will help us discern whether FOCUS Missionaries
would be a good fit at Holy Spirit Parish.
October 30th
is our “Revive” Deanery Convocation. The keynote speaker, Ron
Huntley, is the co creator of the Divine Renovation movement along with Fr.
James Mallon. There are brochures describing the breakout sessions and schedule
for the day at church entrances now.
Together let us build a safe place, then call out: “let the children come…”
