By PAUL L M O N T M E R Y Abie Nathan sat in the com-

mercial hotel off Times Square and smiled a s he remembered t h e brief ca- of his Peace Ship in the Middle East last year.

'When I look back, it was a berutiful thing." said the ebul-1 lient advocate of love and I moderation, talking of the! floating radio station broadcast t o Arabs and Jews last summer and fall, and through the Yom Kippur war.]

"Every night a t sunset we had the classical hour:' Mr. Nathan said. laughing softly a t t h e thought of it. 'We'd tell everybody t o stop what they were doingand look a t the sun and the sky and the sea. It's the greatest show on earth, and it's all free."

Friday nights t h m was rock 1

Abie Nathan --I music for the young people on both sides of the conflict.

"We found out the Arab kids 'and the Jewish kids like the same music." Mr. Nathan said. ' W e got requests for the Moody Blues from 'Cairo, and we got requests for the M d y Blues from Tel Aviv." 4

Seeking Funds Again I Mr. Nathan, one of the most;

quixotic figures produced by1 25 years of Arab-Israeli fight- ing, is back in the United States seeking contributions to keep the Peace Ship afloat arid broadcasting. He spent nearly four years here pa~nstakingly. raising the $300.000 to refit the 180-foot coastal freighter for broadcasting, and now fears he

might have togive up his dream. "It's incredible how little we

need for what we can accom-' plish." he said. "For $120,000,' we can keep the ship running! for a year. That's less than I i

r r cent of the cost of .one ~ g h t e r plane."

Mr. Nathan is a 46-year-old Israeli who was a fighter pilot for the British in World War1 11, t h a n h a d careers in Israel as a restaurateur and a n dealer; before turning to peace. He' first won attention in 1966 by flying alone in an ancient bi- plane from Israel to Egypt t o t ry to convince the leaders of the two countries to sit down! and talk.

Devoted t o the Cause 1 Since then, he has devoted

all of his time and much of his fortune t o the cause. His view Is tha t hard-linen on both sides of the conflict have been al- loyed t o put forth their views on war and confrontation with- o u t permitting attempts a t mu-1 tual understanding.

Broadcadng in Israel and In the Arab countries is controlled by t h e Governments, and Mr. Nathan regards the stations as nothing more than instruments for propaganda-what he calls "screeching and screaming." His white-painted radio ship is1 .an attempt to provide a voice of 'moderation for both sides. encouraging dialogue instead of one-sided speeches.

I t took Mr. Nathan four1 years to raise the money here, and in Europe. Volunteers from peace groups helped, but often he found himself working alone in what seemed a hopeless cause. I t took a hunger strike by him to attract attention and r a k e the last $48,000 needed t o send the ship on its way.

Broadcast 3,000 Hours I The Peace Ship, with a volun-

teer crew. began broadcasting in the Mediterranean last May. Mr. Nathan estimates that ,its 50.000-watt transmitter reach 30 million Arabs and Jews. The station was on the air for 3,000 hours before the money ran ~ u t last November.1

The station pirated news from the iqternationai services] and stations like the B.B.C. for re-broadcast with interspersedi comments. During the war Mr. Nathan said he would t;y to lessen the iension by broad- casting funny items o r news about Elizabeth Taylor or Prin- cess Anne 'instead of concen- trating on the fighting.

When the money ran out. Mr. Nathan and the crew took the ship t o Marseilles, where it is still berthed. He said he spent a month there trying to raise more money, and collected\~1I.

Friends in the peace move- ment paid for his ticket to the, United States and for his stay a t the Paramount Hotel he:.?. He said his immediate aim was t o find $25 000 to return the ship to tLe Mediterranean ! where he hopes he can selil commercials and make the sta- tion self-supporting. So far, he said. $2.000 has come into the Peace Ship Fund. P.O. Box 11 11. New York. N. Y. 10022.

WHAT I S A FREQUENCY CHECK?

Page Taylor

Frequency checks have been confused and mistaken f o r equipment t e s t s and even heterodynes from adjacent-frequency foreign s t a t ions . How can we dis t inguish between a r e a l FC and something t h a t i s n ' t ?

Although it is no longer required by FCC regula t ions f o r AM s t a t i o n s t o monitor t h e i r frequencies through a monthly measurement, many still do so , and the format of t he frequency check may be a s var ied a s regular-schedule formats. Most of ten , however, you w i l l tune t o a frequency and hear a steady 500 o r 1000-cycle tone, in ter rupted by an ID e i t h e r i n voice o r code ( i f you're extremely luoky, hi!) The normal duration of a frequency check is f i f t e e n minutes -- i f you're tuned t o a tone fo r a period s ign i f i can t ly longer than f i f t e e n minutes, chances are , you're hearing an equipment t e s t . Some s t a t i o n s , pa r t i cu la r ly those i n the southeastern pa r t of t he United S ta t e s , t e s t with a telephone d i a l tone, pitched considerably lower than the usual tone. Several s t a t i o n s still ID i n morse code, helping the monitoring company and the DXter ID t h e s t a t i o n on a crowded frequency.

Several years ago, it was considerably eas i e r t o pick out an ID on a frequency check -- unfortunately, t h i s is no longer the case. The usual period of s t a t i o n iden t i f i ca t ion is r i g h t a t the beginning of the t e s t , and a t the conclusion. A few s t a t i o n s still break i n t h e middle of t h e t e s t period f o r I D , but these are few i n number, and seem t o be decreasing rapidly. It is wise t o consult t he Inter-Club Frequency Check L i s t fo r t he perio& during which you intend t o l i s t e n , and tune t o the frequency of the desired s t a t i o n seve ra l minutes before the t e s t i s due t o begin, i n the;hopes t h a t you w i l l ca tch t h e s t a t i o n coming on with an ID.

On the other hand, you ' l l hear p re t ty nearly everything and anything imaginable on an equipment t e s t : music of all kinds, from c l a s s i c a l t o hard rock (some lovely s t a t i o n s play an e n t i r e s ide of an LP album, then f l i p t o the other s ide and play it a s well , all without one s ing le ID!); endless open c a r r i e r s ( v i s a v i s WBZ/kDKA on a Monday morning); tones of var ious p i tches ("London b l i t zk r i eg f1 tones) ; s t a t i o n promos ("WDEN is everywhere"); fun and f r o l i c s a t t he t ransmit ter s i t e ("Hi, a l l you kiddies out i n radio-land! Can you hear me? Ha, ha, ha"). A s we can see , some of these p rac t i se s a re outlandish a t bes t t o i l l e g a l a t worst, but these a re the th ings t h a t can be heard on p re t ty near ly any MM "experimental period" time s lo t . The duration of an E F can be anything from a few minutes ("Good morning! WIG8 Pompton Lakes tes t ing. Good night!If) t o all morning long (l1WKBA Vinton...wefll be here with you f o r the next four hours while we adjus t our t ransmit ter , so why not s t a y with us awhile...").

DXfers on the eas t coast have a problem DX1ing frequency checks which i s not only confusing and time-wasting, but annoying. Frequencies such as 1440 and 1240 which have checks l i s t e d fo r a c e r t a i n time w i l l almost always y i e ld the proper 1000-cycle tone (during winter months), but not necessar i ly because the desired s t a t i o n has showed up. I f the tone r e fuses t o break a f t e r f i f t e e n minutes of monitoring, and is s t i l l present an hour or so l a t e r , chances a re you've got nothing more than a heterodyne from Radio Luxembourg on 1439 o r France on 1241!

A s f o r t he a r t of ver i fy ing frequency checks, it is imperative t h a t all times of tone-on and tone-off be given, plus exact wording of s t a t i o n IDS i f possible. I f no I D S are heard, it is not advisable t o request ve r i f i ca t ion from a "suspected" catch, a s there is no ve r i f i ab le information. Such tenuous loggins of tones could have been any one of a myriad of s t a t i o n s t e s t ing , pa r t i cu la r ly i f on a graveyard channel. For fu r the r de t a i l l ed information, see the Frequency Check L i s t , avai l - able i n NRC Reprint #L2 (64e pp t o Members, 8% t o non-members from NRC HQ).

The following two pages are a reprint of an a r t i c l e which appeared in DX NEWS on Febmarg 19, 1972. I n keeping with some of the comments made i n our l a s t feature on propagation, we are presenting this item again, as it t i e s in with q of our comments. Similar studies on t h i s side of the Pond are discussed br ie f ly in Volume 41, No. 20 ( l a s t issue). We again invi te any interested DXrers who may have detai l led records of what Trans-Atlantic stations were audible on numerous occasions in recent years to submit same to headquarters. We likewise would be interested in hearing from anyone out these who might be interested in organising some Simultaneous Listening Contests f o r next season with these fac- tors i n mind, and selecting several l ike ly frequencies and several unlikely ones f o r monitoring.

ABOUT THOSE MYSTERIOUS CHAfiACTERS WHICH A P P W ON SEVERILT, ISSUES EARLIER THIS SEASON..... they were ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs. Without going into too much unnecesaarg detai l , these characters are primarily alphabetic (the ones we used) although hieroglyphs as a whole comprise alphabetic, phonetic and ideographic characters. In a rather rudimentary way, we attempted to take the Anglicised Arabic phrase used f o r I D purposes by Cairo Radio, namely I1Huna al &ahhaw, or, "This i s Cairon. (For the sake of simplicity, the translations used here are not ent i rely s t r i c t i n nature). I n Hieroglyph, vowels are predominantly absent, as they are i n Arabic, which presentsd some problems, however, we persevered despite them. For these reasons, we found it expedient t o omit the "au sound of the "a ln and likewise the verg short llill sound in "Qahiran. T h i s l e f t us with the l e t t e r s needed to convey phonetically, the g i s t of the "messagen, or H-U-N-A-L--Q-A-H-R-A. The t rans l i t e ra t ion system used f o r conversion to the Hieroglyphs was t h a t used by S i r E. A. W a l l i s Budge, noted English Egyptologist, whose system closely para l le l s tha t of the original t ranslator of the Hieroglyphs, the Frenchman, Champollion. Thus, we arrived a t the symbols which appeared on the f r o n t page f o r several weeks. We took one l i b e r t y in the use of the same glyph f o r the l e t t e r s "Rn and "Ln, which, although ent i rely permissible under the Budge system, is quite confusing, but my i n a b i l i t y to accurately draw the reclining l i o n which also represents "L", I took the easy way out, h i . But, enough of this t r iv ia . -RjE

Page a shows a sample of a new Broadcast S e W c e which i s available t o Industry o r individuals who m a y be interested i n obtaining a written history of a gdven station. The service i s called "Broadcast Pro-file", and fur ther information as w e l l as a catalogue mq? be obtained by writing to BROADCAST PRO-FILE, BOX 982, HOLLYhTIOD, CA 90028. We requested two samples of these "pro-files", and, i n l i e u of trgFng to describe j u s t what i s contained, we have decided to run one here i n i t s ent i rety as a sample. Standard ra tes are $5.00 f o r AM Pro-files such as we have obtained f o r WSJS-600, Winston-Salem,NC; $2.50 f o r FM Pro-files; and $10.00 f o r Custom Pro-files (station8 not i n the catalogue). Many of the s tat ions l i s t e d are non-existant s ta t ions which have become deleted i n one way o r another. For those of you in college broadcasting curriculums, these might be a most useful resource f o r papers on early broad- casting, which is a most common paper topic ( I know, I went thru tha t a few years back, h i -R~E). We also have a l i s t from Broadcast Pro-file which shows the f i r s t 25 AM broadcast license grants i n 1921, which we w i l l make available by Xerox copy to members a t standard reprint rates.
