Worldly Happenings By : Tessa, Lauren, and Isabella  Popular Happenings Last Month

● The Winter Olympics was happening from February 9th to the 25th in Pyeongchang, South Korea. United States had a great turn out with 9 gold,8 silver, and 6 bronze.

● The Super Bowl happened last month and the two opponents were the New England Patriots and The Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles won with a score of 41-33

Florida Shooting Last month, a tragedy occured in Parkland, Florida. Marjory Stoneman Douglas High

School unfortunately will never be the same. Seventeen students, teachers, and coaches were killed in a school shooting. Our hearts go out to Parkland, the victim’s families, and the victims. Here at Miller, we are planning on helping out as well as we can in this tragic situation.

Groundhog Day   On February 2nd we got to see if we were going to be stuck with winter or getting spring early. Sadly, when Punxsutawney Phil the groundhog came out of his cage he saw his shadow which means we were going to have winter for the next 6 weeks. We have been celebrating Groundhog day since 1887, which means we have been doing this tradition for 120 years! Let’s hope that Punxsutawney Phil won’t see his shadow next year so we won’t be stuck with this cold weather again.

The Story of Claries and Eckens

By Eddie Candelas

“Test Subject Claries, she is the one that can get me out of this place,” A.R.C.A.E.S explained to himself. “All I need to do is wake her up.” Just then A.R.C.A.E.S activates the stasis chambers and wakes her up. Claries steps out of one of the stasis beds and gasps for air. She was disoriented and took a while to stand up. Just then A.R.C.A.E.S says to her “Claries are you alright you have been asleep for quite a while.” Claries learned the language he was speaking because one of the experiments that were done on her allowed her to become a very fast learner. “What happened who, what, is it time for me to test” “No, it is not time for you to test. I need your help” A.R.C.A.E.S stated. “For what” “You are the last living test subject of the Selethion program, I need your help to get me out of this structure.” “What do you mean, did I fail the last test.” “No” Just then a clang in the distance was heard. “You need to get out of there now Claries, you are in danger there is no more structural support there.” “What do you mean?” asked Claries. Just then the floor started to move sideways and large sounds of metal bending are heard. “What the . . .” Claries said as the entire room started to tip. “Move to the door quickly, now” said A.R.C.A.E.S. Claries ran to the open door just as the stasis bed chamber fell to the bottom of a great void. “What happened” asked Claries. Just then she heard a humming noise coming from the top of the shaft. It was a Centerian. “I now have to use the Centerians to talk to you” said A.R.C.A.E.S “What happened to the facility” asked Claries. “Well after the Selethion program ended this structure was not discovered for dismantling and it

Page 8: The Informing Feathersmiller.riversideunified.org/UserFiles/Servers... · The Informing Feathers March 2018 Issue 5 Welcome to the 5th Edition of our school newsletter! Our team is

later fell into disrepair. “Ok A.R.C.A.E.S Delta 32” said Claries. “I am A.R.C.A.E.S 1 so you can just call me by A.R.C.A.E.S” the AI stated. “Ok,” said Claries. They both start down the hall and they see more pieces of the structure start to fall down towards the bottom of the giant shaft. Just then some more metal almost crushes Claries. She starts to run; the centerian boosts its speed to catch up to her. More metal started to fall until she came to a stabile passage way. “Hmm it seems that part of the structure was more unstable then I thought” said A.R.C.A.E.S. They start to walk down a long hallway there was some light coming from other floors in the facility there was even jungle looking vines growing out of some of the holes in the ceiling and great tree roots growing through the walls. It was quiet for a while until they heard a noise behind them. When they turned around they saw this large creature standing before them. Its skin looked like it was mummified. “What is that” asked Claries. “I actually don’t know” said A.R.C.A.E.S. Then the thing started to run towards them. It tried to get Claries but A.R.C.A.E.S stops it from getting near her. But then it hits the centerian with its long stretched out hand and launches it into the wall and it explodes after A.R.C.A.E.S said “Run.” So, Claries runs as fast as she can until the creature grabs her by the leg and holds her upside down. Then the creature looked at her face and Claries saw the horrid sight in front of her. The creature’s face was a man’s face that was mangled and broken; however, it still had the expression of intense pain frozen on it. When the creature was going to throw her into the wall Claries looked to the side of her and saw a sharp rod. She grabbed it and forced it through the side of the creature. It screeched in pain and dropped Claries. But then it quickly recovered and went to grab her again even with the rod lodged in its side. But just then some Centerians came and shot at it. With the turquoise lasers of the Centerians striking the creature, Claries hid in the shadows. The creature had left a deep cut on her leg and she could not walk. A few seconds later the creature was lying on the ground and it appeared to be dead. Just then one of the Centerians came over to Claries and said “I detect a laceration on your leg.” Just then it shot a weak laser into the cut to disinfect it then a grey cloth teleported on top of the cut and the centerian heated it up with its laser to seal the wound. “Come, you need to get to the control center so you can transfer me,” said A.R.C.A.E.S through the Centerian. So, they continue on through the passage way. When they reached the end of the passage there was an even bigger hall that had tall ceilings. You see the degraded force bender metal, tree roots, and vines coming out of different parts of the walls and large vents that come down from the ceiling. “This facility was actually one of the most advanced of its kind” stated A.R.C.A.E.S. “It was?” asked Claries. “Yes it was and it was the last. Delta 32 was the last A.R.C.A.E.S AI to be activated. They ran into a large door and A.R.C.A.E.S investigated the holographic panel that was on the top of the wall, left of the door. “You know the reason why they put these so high? It was so that experiments could not get to them, even ones that can jump high.” Just then when A.R.C.A.E.S got close to the panel the front of the Centerian that he was controlling opened. You see, the parts in front of the Centerian have little prongs that touch the surface of the panel. After a few seconds the symbols on the panel changed, and the great door started to open. But it stopped and the panel showed a force bender word in red. “Oh no, it seems that one of the door’s mechanisms have jammed. I will have to go clear it up,” said A.R.C.A.E.S. “What do you mean?” asked Claries. “Are you just going to leave me here with out a way to defend myself?” The Centerian came down from the control panel and went to her. “I will try and get you a weapon but there are no guarantees that there will be working ones.” Just then they both hear the sound, the sound of the creatures. They both look at the vents and the creatures come out but some of them are different. Some have an almost reptilian look to them; others looked like several different creatures mixed together. Along with these creatures came a small little squid like organisms that had very long heads but very short tentacles that they used to move. “Whatever this unknown organism is it must have been able to infect the old mutants.” Just then a laser hit the Centerian and its energy shield came into view. “The organism has apparently learned how to use weapons” said A.R.C.A.E.S. The Centerian started to fire at the creatures coming out of the vents. Claries on the other hand was fighting for her life. She was cornered by a hoard of creatures and A.R.C.A.E.S was trying to keep them away from her. Just then, one of the creatures limbs flung in Claries’ direction in an attempt to whack her with the gun that appeared melted into the skin of its limb. Claries grabbed the barrel and forced it out of the creature’s mangled hand. Claries took the weapon and remembered from one of her tests how to use it. She pulled the trigger of the rifle and a laser shot through the creature that was about to kill her. “I need to reset or repair the mechanics that open the door; I will try to send some Centerians to aid you.” Just then the Centerian went into one of the vents and Claries started blasting at the creatures but some were coming back to life. Claries ran out of area that she was in to avoid being cornered. Then she saw it. The little squid like creatures climb onto the backs of the other creatures that were dead. They stay motionless on the backs of the creatures for a moment before the creature comes back to life with the squid creature attached to its spinal cord. By high jacking the creature’s nervous system, these squid creatures bring life back to them much like a marionette to a puppet. So, Claries focuses on the little squid things instead of the creature itself. She keeps on shooting the squid things on the backs of the creatures and it seems to be the creature’s weakness due to the fact that the squid things are keeping them alive. The creatures were about to corner Claries when a group of Centerians came out of the vents. “I got the door fixed!” hollered A.R.C.A.E.S. Claries made a run for the door as it was opening. On the other side there were more Centerians fighting the Things. Claries knew that many of the Centerians were destroyed due to the fact that there was little, exploded, chard, piles of metal around. The Centerians were crowding around Claries to protect her from the Things. “Did you find out what these things are” asked Claries. “I am sorry. I have not. So, since I have not created a name yet I will just call them The Things. I know it is not a proper name but due to the situation you are in I am sure you ca…” “Stop talking and find me a way out” Claries

Page 9: The Informing Feathersmiller.riversideunified.org/UserFiles/Servers... · The Informing Feathers March 2018 Issue 5 Welcome to the 5th Edition of our school newsletter! Our team is

interrupted. Just then some of the Centerians were shot down. Claries jumped out of the way to ovoid the explosions they caused due to their power cores becoming unstable. “Hold on just a little longer I think I found an exit” said A.R.C.A.E.S. “Where A.R.C.A.E.S where?” asked Claries. “There is some sort of breach to the left of this passage way” said A.R.C.A.E.S. So Claries runs to the passage way next to her while the Centerians covered her. Once she got to the breach, she looked and saw that in the other room there was an elevator. “I will seal the entrance,” said A.R.C.A.E.S. Just then, one of the Centerians came in to the room while all the others fired quickly at a part near the top of hole in the wall. Just then the wall crumbled down sealing the entrance. Claries looked at the doors at both sides of the room and they were both sealed tight. “Hold on I try and get both of the doors open” said A.R.C.A.E.S. Just then you hear the doors struggle to open and get stuck. Just then they hear the creatures making some kind of horrid howling noise. “Did you just trap me in here?” asked Claries. “No, no let me process, or think I should say,” said A.R.C.A.E.S. “Ah, we could use the elevator. It still seems to be functioning” “Alright,” said Claries questionably as she saw the elevator door snap some vines that were growing on the other side. She steps in and the Centerian followed. There is a holographic panel that when swiped shows all the different floors. “Select the second floor,” stated A.R.C.A.E.S. So, Claries swiped through all 72 floors until she found it. She selected it and the elevator started to go up. “This is a maintenance elevator, so it should bring us closer to me and also it uses an elevator car instead of a moving platform so we won’t have to worry about those Things jumping in.” Just then the elevator stopped and started to make creaking noises. “It seems to have gotten caught on something,” said A.R.C.A.E.S. Just then the elevator car went into free fall and the Centerian and Claries were forced into the ceiling.

Searching for a good sushi restaurant in Riverside?...well search no further! Here is a list of 3 of my favorite sushi spots to eat at in Riverside.

1. My personal favorite sushi restaurant would have to be OOKA. OOKA is located at the Riverside Plaza. For sushi lovers like me, I order the Uni Nigiri and Salmon Nigiri. If you’re not a fan of sushi, they have plenty of cooked entrees as well. OOKA also has fantastic sushi lunch specials from $11-$16 and includes different rolls, sushi and comes with miso soup and salad. The fish here is always fresh and very consistent in quality and taste. OOKA has 3 different seating arrangements. They have a dining room which is a casual eating area, a sushi bar where you get to be up close and personal with the sushi chefs, and teppan tables. Teppan is where the chefs cook your meal right in front of you. Teppan is great for birthdays and other special occasions. Overall, I think OOKA has to be my number one pick for my favorite sushi restaurant in Riverside.

2. Next up on my list of favorite sushi restaurants in Riverside is Starfish Sushi. It is located at the Canyon Crest Towne Center. I used to live over in Canyon Crest and my family went here a lot. The waiters and staff are very nice and helpful. And of course the sushi is amazing! I always order the tuna rolls, tamango, and freshwater eel. The restaurant also specializes in tempura entrees. The restaurant is actually very small. It has a sushi bar and a dining room that can fit around 35 people. But you can not judge by size because this is my second favorite sushi restaurant in Riverside.

3. The third and final restaurant on this list is probably the one I go to the most, Tokyo Joe’s. The main reason I go to Tokyo Joe’s a lot is because of its affordability. Most of the menu is cooked entrees, but they do have some great sushi entrees as well. My personal recommendation here is the Yo Roll and the California Roll which uses real crab instead of imitation. I also get the bento box every once in a while. On Monday nights from 4pm-close it’s 2 for 1 Sushi Night, so if you buy a roll you get another free. Tokyo Joe’s is located on Central Avenue just down the street from the Riverside Plaza. The staff here is very friendly and always cater to your needs. Sometimes they even throw in a few extra pieces of rolls to enjoy for free! Be sure to join the Tokyo Joe’s Addict Club where you’ll receive points everytime you eat here that can redeemed for free stuff. So go ahead give it a try, you’ll be glad you did!

ASB COLUMN By Brayden Rosa

ASB has been busy working for the better of our school yet again. This year has been very finance focused. First off, we have been figuring out how much money we made from the Rose dance. Secondly, we’ve had a good amount of meetings this month. In our meetings, we discuss and improve pre-offs from all around the school. Whenever it be from band, choir, yearbook, or even ourselves. All money being transfered to the school goes through us. ASB also is helping with the newest Random Acts of Kindness event. Similar to February, all boys will be receiving a shamrock sticker. If any girls are being kind, then they shall receive a shamrock sticker. All girls with shamrock stickers will then get a candy at the end of the day. This has been the latest news in ASB. I hope you have a FANtastic day!
