Family Fun at Carters Meadow. The 'activity morning' at Carters Meadow on June 4th was

enjoyed by all who came - children, parents and grandparents.

Children led the way, following the Gruffalo Hunt and ending up at the pond, where pond-dipping proved to be a great success. We found many fascinating creatures lurking in the water. Tractor rides were very popular - I don't know who was more excited - the children or the parents who took a turn at the controls. We were lucky with the weather which was hot and sunny, bringing out the wildflowers and the butterflies - the meadow was looking at it's best. Whilst drinks and home-made cake were on offer, many had brought their own provisions and finished with a picnic by the pond.Although the event was free our visitors donated generously and the proceeds will go towards constructing a pier to improve pond-dipping access. Thanks to all of you who supported this event. The most commonly heard comment was 'Please do this again'. We will! If you would like to be more involved in the upkeep and development of Carters Meadow, why not come along on the first Sunday of every month 10.0 am to 12.0 am. It is quite a sociable morning and all ages are welcome.Judy Fearn

I’ve just come back from a package holiday where our hotel was miles away from where we booked. We couldn’t contact anyone to change hotels, and had to pay to travel back and forwards to the destination we’d booked. Can I claim compensation? It’s reasonable to ask for compensation when you haven’t got the holiday you paid for. Your accommodation should be as agreed. If not, it’s usually considered a breach of contract. You can’t claim the total cost of the holiday, but you can ask to be reimbursed for the extra travel costs, plus a fair sum for the change to your holiday.Start by writing an email or letter to the tour operator’s customer services department. Give your booking reference number, explain your grievance and specify the amount of compensation you’d like. As evidence for your claim, include the details of when you tried to contact your tour operator while you were away, and copies of any taxi or car hire receipts. The firm may come back with an initial offer that is lower than what you are asking for, so be prepared to negotiate. If you’re not offered any compensation, check your tour operator’s website to see if they belong to a UK trade body, like ABTA. If they do, you can lodge a new complaint through the trade body’s website. The tour operator is obliged to respond to the complaint. For further help and advice, contact Citizens Advice Mid Suffolk on 01449 676060, email [email protected] call in and see us at 5 Milton Road South, Stowmarket, Suffolk. Scouts Summer Mini Fete – 1st Bacton Scouts are holding their annual mini fete and BBQ on Friday 7th July at 6.30pm at the Scout HQ. There will not be a normal pack night on this night for Cubs and Scouts but please support us for an evening of a bit of fun, games and our traditional BBQ feast…

Recycling Bins / Waste Bins- Please remember to use our recycling bins at the Scout HQ – This also raises funds for the group and is much easier than transporting your bottles and clothes to the Stowmarket recycling centre / bins. However, could we please ask that you do not dispose of unwanted Duvets / Quilts as these don’t fit into the clothing recycling bin and block the shoot. Please dispose of them at the waste recycling skips in Stowmarket. We are spending a considerable amount of time trying to keep the site tidy and your help and assistance would be greatly appreciated. It is extremely disappointing that these facilities are abused as they are and although they do provide some revenue this is not a lot and the committee are volunteers and should not have to keep clearing the site and making it safe for our young sections of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

If anyone would like their son or daughter to join a section, please don’t hesitate to contact the Group Secretary.

My hanging baskets are in full flower. They need to be watered on a daily basis at this time of the year. You may find on a windy day the baskets may dry out even quicker and need watering twice a day. Any nourishment or feed included in the original hanging basket compost you used will have been used up by now. I now depend on continued growing success with a universal plant food concentrate. I buy one litre containers of proprietary brand liquid feed. I use one cap full of the concentrate to about five litres of water this will give you about fifty watering cans full ready for use. Try and get  a feed with trace elements of Seaweed extract in the mixture. Over the years I've found this gives healthier and more vigorous plants.

In the centre of two of my baskets I planted hanging ivy geraniums Malaika, with mixed colour Petunias equally spaced around the baskets with Sapphire Blue Trailing Lobelia over-hanging the edges. In another two baskets I used Rosemary Higham Fuchsias as a centre with Aztec Orchid Magic Verbena around the edges with mixed colour hanging Lobelia flowing over the edges. The other two baskets F1 mixed Geraniums with trailing Indian Mint Satureja and Trailing Orange Begonia. They are looking spectacular at the moment even after the very strong winds we've had in recent times.

I'm cutting my lawns at least twice a week at this time of year. Make sure you collect all the grass cutings, put them in your compost bin. Edging the borders makes a good job look even better.

Dead head your roses and any other finished flower heads you have, as this will help to get continual flowering until the end of the season.

Sweep any paths and pick up any garden debris. It all helps to make a well maintained and looked after garden.

Happy Gardening

Norman Parcell.

We’re very lucky to live in a village which is surrounded by footpaths.  But they can sometimes be hazardous.   The path which runs from the village hall, between St Mary’s House and Bramble Cottage has already caused one resident to need hospital treatment after she fell forward on her face.  The problem is hidden tree roots and stumps. It’s a problem in low light because of sidegrowth, but is even more of a tripping hazard in the winter.  If you want to do something about a path, you can report it on the Suffolk County Council/report a public right of way issue website.  I found it by googling “report Suffolk footpaths” rather than navigate the whole site.  There should be a response within three weeks.Ann Kent

Celebrate the heroes in your community!Nominations are now open for the Community Action Suffolk Awards 2017 (supported by Birketts Solicitors), which recognise the volunteers, communities and young people making an impact on the lives of people in Suffolk.Eight awards will be presented to individuals and organisations in Suffolk, from Village Hall or Community Building of the Year to the Outstanding Contribution to Volunteering award. If you know of someone, or an organisation making a real difference, you have until Friday 21 July 2017 to make your nomination via the CAS website www.communityactionsuffolk.org.uk/awards.Freckenham Village Hall, near Mildenhall, won the 2016 Village Hall or Community Building of the Year award. Jane Leitch, Secretary to the Trustees at the Hall, said:“It is so lovely to be recognised for the hard work and occasional sleepless nights! The Hall will be 20 years old in 2017 and we have come a long way from just having a Mother & Toddler group or the occasional bingo session, lunch or outing to the seaside!”The Hall Committee consists of a dedicated group of enthusiastic volunteers who ensure an inclusive, active programme of events including farmers markets, film nights, exercise classes and live entertainment. They work hard to make the building more sustainable, having installed solar panels and upgraded the lighting system to save energy, and with plans to install a more energy efficient heating system.

Judith Gunion won an award in 2016 for her volunteering achievements, giving her time to many local, national and international events. Judith said:“I can’t believe I’m stood here inspiring others, when only a few years ago I was just one of 270,000 people who applied to be a London 2012 Gamesmaker. Volunteering is a fantastic way of learning that you can push your boundaries. You will learn from it, grow from it and in time you will pass on those skills to others. So take the first step. Start small and then let the world be your oyster”.The eight CAS Awards are:1. The Anne Dunford OBE award for Youth Participation2. The Roddy Macleod award for Youth Club of the Year3. The Andrew Towers award for Young Person of the Year4. The Colonel Probert award for Community Initiative5. The Ian Campbell MBE award for Individual Initiative6. The Village Hall / Community Building award (supported by CAS Insurance Services)7. Outstanding Contribution to Volunteering (supported by My CharityGuard)8. Event Organiser of the Year (supported by Larking Gowen)

A Day to RememberRobbie Warner Memorial day –

Saturday 22nd July

This is an annual charity day taking place in memory of my son, Robbie Warner. Robbie passed away in February 2015 aged 19, unbeknown to us, due to Diabetes type 1. Robbie lived in in the local area, attending school in Stowupland, as well as participating in other local activities such as playing for Bacton Football Club. Robbie was attending Northampton University at the time and was studying Drama and Sports Science. It is because of Robbie’s interest in such activities that we have decided, as a family, to organise such an event in his memory that also reflected his personality. The 22nd of July, will consist of football, music, socialising and raising money for Diabetes UK. It will take place at Bacton Football Club. If you are a local company and would like to provide us with funding in order to sponsor this event the sponsorship money would go towards hire of bouncy castle, staging for the live bands, BBQ etc.Should you feel that you would like to sponsor this event or donate a raffle prize, we will advertise your company by way of putting your organisation’s advert in our leaflet that is handed out on the day and you

will also be advertised on general posters that will be all around the local area advertising the event. I would be most grateful if you could contact me on 07553 922255 should you wish to discuss this further, or should you decide to sponsor the day.

County Cllrs Report –Andrew Stringer

New Look Council - Post the recent County election results, the new look of the council is now in focus. Like elsewhere in the countryThe Conservatives now have a comfortable majority, after UKIP being completely removed, out of 75 seats the Conservatives now have 52 seats with Labour having 11, Lib Dems have 5 and Greens have 3 with Independents having 4. We have formed a group formed from the Lib Dem Green and Independents, as of today that group now exists and has 12 members. Highways - The order for a 7.5 tonne HGV weight restriction along Station Road Haughley has now been tabled for consultation, and the traffic count has begun. The conclusion to pursue this line has been drawn up after much discussion and thought as to how to reduce HGV numbers on rural single track tributaries, as well as try to stem the amount of HGV incidents in this area, at the end of last year we even had an example of a lorry striking a listed building causing £1000’s of pounds worth of damage.Speed limit extension - The proposed speed limit extension to the north and south of Old Newton along the B1113 has still not been heard by the Speed Limit Panel, the police did send some information in at the 11th hour. The Police are at the moment objecting to the proposed extension, this does seem ironic as the lack of Police enforcement is the main reason for embarking on this course. One huge issue of concern is that some of the accident data in this area had been incorrectly plotted by the Police.Bus Stop - Many thanks to Councillor Chambers for alerting me recently, to the smashed glass in the Bus Stop on Shop green. I had a look, and swept up the glass on the path before reporting the issue to the County

team, the repair was carried out within 24 hours of reporting. I don’t normally report relatively small issues like this one, but the excellent service from our team needed sharing, perhaps they would like to help out the pothole team!Andrew Stringer 01449 780339 07774 199061 [email protected]

Our May meeting was very well attended being of interest to history lovers and dressmakers alike. Jackie Norman came to speak to us about her career in making Historical Costumes in the Tudor style. Jackie explained that, with her interest in Tudor dressmaking she had decided to make costumes, both male and female, and take them into schools so that children can experience first hand what these costumes feel like and how exactly they were worn. Apparently this often involves dressing up the teachers for live demonstrations! We were treated to a potted history of the Tudors which contained some interesting facts such as that the small doors and windows in houses of the period owed more to heat conservation than to shortness of stature. Jackie had brought a range of beautiful costumes which were displayed on various tailors dummies but she also dressed a volunteer WI member, Michele MacAusland, in a gentry petticoat and gown from the period.During this painstaking demonstration it became abundantly clear why the upper classes required servants to dress them and their hair and ‘Gentleman of the Garde Robe’ and his female equivalent would have been a very prestigious position in any household.

The first garment to be put on would have been a linen shift and this would have been clean every day. It’s purpose was to soak up bodily secretions and protect outer garments which would have been more difficult to clean. The washing of clothes was much more of a science in those days devoid as they were from any labour saving inventions such as detergents, washing machines and Dry Cleaners! Next on would have been a Kirtle, boned to take the weight of upper garments and apparently often made with inferior materials at the back which would not have shown underneath the ultimate garment - the gown. Big sleeves would have had false sleeves underneath covering the lower arm and these could be changed to give variety to the look of the gown. A great many pins were used to keep the different pieces together and this is meant to be where the term ‘pin money’ originated. Women always had their heads covered, contrary to what you often see on the television, and grown women who went around with their hair down and no head- covering were regarded as the lowest of the low, prostitutes etc. The construction of the Caps/Hats was often quite complex and it was very interesting to see Jackie’s handiwork close up.In Tudor times people dressed in clothes appropriate to their position in life and there were strict laws regarding what colours and fabrics you could or couldn’t wear punishable in the courts.

Next meeting - Monday 3rd JulyWhen we will have a talk by Hattie Bennet entitled ‘My Life in Music’.As ever Visitors are welcome at £3 per session for a maximum of 3 sessions.

From Bacton Rectory.... We live in confused, troubled and sometimes terrifying times; hearing about acts of terror through extremism, and increasingly confused messages from our politicians. Our hearts go out to those who must cope with the tragic loss of loved ones; our cries to stand up to the terrorists can still be tinged with fear for our own safety. It is in such times that many people turn to the church for reflection and prayer – Bacton, Old Newton and Wyverstone churches are open every day – others by a quick telephone call; please take advantage of these places within your village. In difficult times, we need somewhere that demonstrates certainty as opposed to chaos, of something that gives hope rather than despair; the local church can be that place for many people, because it has been there all our lives. We owe much to the generous people who have gone before us, who paid for the buildings we have today, together with those who for centuries have contributed their part to the upkeep of the church building, and even more importantly, to supporting Christian ministry in the area. It’s good to know that the church building is valued so much within the broader community, especially for times of joy or loss. So many people who ask about Baptism or Marriage have strong links to a parish church, even though they may now live elsewhere; wanting to maintain family tradition of parents having been married or themselves being baptised in one of the village churches. It is all too easy to think that, because something has been around for several hundred years, it will continue to do so. Sadly, with many village churches, this is not the case; all too many church buildings have been forced to close their doors through lack of funds and support to sustain the total cost of ministry. The ‘Friends’ of the churches give much support toward maintenance and improvement of our buildings, but for the regular costs of supporting ministry, training, building insurance, electricity etc. our collection of churches must currently generate a total of around £80,000 each year from personal giving. It is good to reflect occasionally on the focal points of our villages, and how much they mean to us, in both spiritual and financial terms; the choices we make today will impact generations to come. What will be our legacy for the future life of the churches in our villages?Val & David

CHERNOBYL CHILDRENS LIFELINE MID SUFFOLK LINKAs the date of the group arrival becomes imminent we would like to say a very big thank you to all of our supporters who have helped to make this years visit possible. Many people have dropped donations into our Charity shop but not left their details so I have been unable to write personally to thank you. If you prefer to remain anonymous then of course we respect this but I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge how grateful we are for your contributions. The Charity Shop provides a great focal point for us and helps to raise awareness for our work. Although we have Links across the country we are not a National chain of shops, all staff are volunteers, we do not pay for any management. We really do need people who are able to offer a few hours a week to help out covering for holidays and sickness, each session is only 3 hours so if you think you could be available to help with “spot cover” we would love to hear from you, no experience is necessary and you’re never on your own. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. We give as much support as possible to the children, their families at home and the Host Families who take the children into their homes for the whole month. The donations and support we receive from our local community form a great part of this support. Yes, the main purpose of the children’s visit is for Health Recuperation but how brilliant is it that we can also give them memories to take home that will last them a lifetime! Most of the children who come in the group will ever leave Belarus again. Occasionally a child may receive an invitation for a Private Visit but with the increasing costs of air fares and visas the number of these invitations become less each year.We are always happy to continue to receive donations of clothing for the children throughout the year, any age is appreciated as we provide clothing to the children when they come here and also to their siblings at home plus other children who, for various reasons, are unable to be included in the program. On August 27th I will travel with 20 people on a good will mission to Belarus, many of whom have never been before. We are busy collecting things to take with us to give to the families we will visit and one of the most valued items which are also light to carry are vegetable seeds. If you have any left over from your own use this year or would just like to donate some for this trip, they would be really appreciated. It is quite something to see how the parents faces light up when we give them such a simple gift.
