The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit Every born-again believer has the Holy

Spirit in measure through the new birth or at regeneration (John 3:5-8; John 4:14)

Following Pentecost the Holy Spirit would begin a new ministry to believers that was unlike the old testament. The new ministry would be an indwelling of the Holy Spirit that would be permanent. (John 14: 16-17)

The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit John 14: 16-17 “And I will ask the Father, and he will

give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you”

The Work of the Holy Spirit in the New Birth The following scriptures show the work of the Holy

Spirit in the new birth John 3:5-8; Romans 8:16 “Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can

enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and THE SPIRIT. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be BORN AGAIN.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone BORN OF THE SPIRIT.” John 3:5-8

The Indwelling Presence of the Holy Spirit Being born again is not just an experience;

rather it is receiving the indwelling Presence of the Holy Spirit, a Divine Personality, who comes to make His home in us.

The New Testament gives us three relations that God sustains toward man. God is FOR us (Romans 8:31) God is WITH us God is IN us (1 Cor. 3:16)

The Role of the Holy Spirit Within The Holy Spirit WITHIN results in the

fruit of the recreated spirit There are two groups of nine in

connection with the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer 1. Nine fruit of the Spirit, which are a result

of the Holy Spirit’s INDWELLING presence 2. Nine gifts of the spirit, which are a result

of the Holy Spirit’s INFILLING power.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit After the new birth there is also a work of

the Holy Spirit that God desires to perform in the life of the believer subsequent or following the new-birth experience, and that is called the INFILLING of the Holy Spirit or the BAPTISM.

God desires that everyone of His children to experience the dual working of the Spirit of God in their lives: The Holy Spirit within (indwelling) in the new birth. And the Holy Spirit upon (infilling) the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Two Separate Experiences: Saul’s Conversion and Baptism in the Holy Spirit Acts 9 records Saul’s baptism in the

Holy Spirit. Also Acts 9 shows us that receiving

salvation and receiving the Holy Spirit are two separate experiences

Saul’s conversion on the Damascus road (Act9:1-9)

Saul is saved before he interacts with Ananias Saul’s baptism in the Holy Spirit (Acts9:17)

Any Believer Can Receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit Luke 11:9-13 New International Version (NIV)    9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you;

seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.”

Baptism of the Holy Spirit “I am going to send you what my

Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” Luke 24:49

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”Acts 1:8

Extreme TeachingsExtreme Belief Explanation

If you are born again you have all the Holy Spirit– and you have all the Holy Spirit there is to have.

You do have the Holy Spirit at the new birth, but this is not the same as the infilling of the Holy Spirit or the endowment of power from on High

Speaking in tongues is evidence of salvation

It is evidence of the infilling of the Holy Spirit

The baptism of the Holy Spirit passed away with the last apostle. Only those who received the Holy Ghost by the laying of hands of the apostle could receive the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:39 shows us clearly that the Holy Spirit is for all believers today as much as it was for believers in the Early Church.

Page 14: The Indwelling, the Baptism, and the Infilling of

The Holy Spirit Upon Us There is a work of the Holy Spirit that God

desires in the lives of the believers: This is the Holy Spirit coming upon believers to endue them with power from on High Acts 1:5, 8, “ For John baptized with[a] water, but

in a few days you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit…But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Page 15: The Indwelling, the Baptism, and the Infilling of

The Holy Spirit Upon: The Gateway Into the Supernatural The fruit of the spirit is the result of the Holy

Spirit’s indwelling presence. This is the first nine fold group of connections with the Holy Spirit.

The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is for fruit bearing The second nine fold manifestations of the Holy

Spirit are the gifts of the Spirit. These nine fold supernatural manifestations of the Holy Spirit is the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking tongues (1 Cor. 12:7-11).

The infilling of the Holy Spirit is for service.

Page 16: The Indwelling, the Baptism, and the Infilling of

The Holy Spirit Upon: Being Filled with the Fullness of God There is a greater measure of the Holy Spirit for

believers to receive in the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

God has given us the gift of the Holy Spirit so that

believers might enter into all of the fullness of God. (Eph. 3:19, 20)

Being filled with the Spirit is the door way into the manifestations of the gifts of the Spirit

There is no way to get into the supernatural manifestations of the Holy Spirit than through the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Page 17: The Indwelling, the Baptism, and the Infilling of

The Holy Spirit Upon: Power to Put Us Over in Life and In Supernatural Prayer Ephesians 5:20 states that we should

be filled with the fullness of God, “… according to the POWER that worketh in us”

John 14:16 the Holy Spirit is our intercessor

He will help us and give us guidance in our prayer life

(Romans 8:26,27)
