Confucius say ..... “Trust is important”
"A young man should be a good son at home and an obedient
young man abroad, sparing of speech but trustworthy in what he
says, and should love the multitude at large but cultivate the
friendship of his fellow men“
The essentials of good government are:
• a sufficiency of food,
• a sufficiency of arms; and
• the confidence of the people.
If forced to give up one of these, give up arms; and if forced to give up
two, give up food. Death has been the portion of all men from of old; but
without the people's trust, nothing can endure.
I listen to his avowals and trust his conduct; after that I
listen to his avowals and watch his conduct
Confidence is having faith in someone.
Self-confidence is trusting that you have what it takes,
to handle whatever happens. You feel sure of yourself
and enjoy trying new things, without letting doubts or fears hold
you back.
When you have confidence in others, you rely on them

Leadership: How do we make sense of it all?
• On 9 August 2003 there were 12,963
books on leadership. If we were able to
read at the rate of one per day this
would equate to 35 years of reading,
including weekends. By 28th February
2005 this had already increased to 47
years and 17,138 books.
• On 26th March 2010 there were
150,441.
• On 19th October 2010 there were
178,327
• Forget reading them all in your lifetime!

New way of thinking? Collective Leadership
“Collective leadership implies both a
different way of thinking about
leadership and the need to develop
different leadership skills to those that
are traditionally included in
contemporary leadership development
programmes.”

The Real Intelligent Questions: Unknown Unknowns
Donald Rumsfeld in his famous (but
unfairly derided) formulation
‘(A)s we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we
know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know
there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown
unknowns - the ones we don't know we don't know.’

RELECTION: What are your values?
What are
your values
... What do
you really
stand for?
How does
this shape
your
behaviours?
www.compassleadership.co Leadership: Exploding the Myth Slide No 24
Your leadership challenges?
• Continue to „punch above your weight‟
• sustained leadership and development of the
profession.
•
Step 1 The Past – who/what are
the influences (family, friends,
colleagues, etc) that have helped
to get me to where I am today,
what are my strengths, my talents,
etc.
Step 2 Today – what are my
limiting beliefs, self-fulfilling
prophecies, fears, etc that are
stopping from being the leader
that I could be.
Step 3 The Future – what are the
other ways I could behave,
claiming a purpose and identifying
where I want to go.
www.compassleadership.co Leadership: Exploding the Myth Slide No 25
For the Business and your Profession
Step 1 The Past – where has your
business and your profession come
from?
Step 2 Today – what is our shared
vision, what do we want to achieve
and how we can involve everyone in
creative and innovative ideas – what
is blocking this? How can the
business or the profession be the
market leader that it could be?
Step 3 The Future – innovate,
experiment, reflect and change – the
business and your people
www.compassleadership.co Leadership: Exploding the Myth Slide No 26
So what is needed for your Business and your
Profession?
We need to be:
• At the cutting edge in terms of
business and leadership
• Understand the bigger picture by
asking some intelligent questions
• Encourgage others to lead by
coming up with well thought out
solutions
• Be looking right across our
business space not just our
immediate space
FINALLY:
• We need a plan – where are we
going today – based on our past –
and moving towards our future
