A Fellow Warriors, families, friends and supporters of our association:

It was indeed an unexpected honor to be selected as your As-sociation president at our annual reunion in St. Louis, Mo. Thanks for your confidence in me and in the other members who have stepped forward to assume new and greater responsibilities. I also want to thank Ray Hansen for his out-standing leadership during his two years as President. As a first timer at this year’s reunion, I was impressed by what a great event it was. From registra-tion through the Grand Banquet, all went smoothly. Thanks for a job well done to all members of the Association who contributed to its success. We were fortunate to have out-standing support by the active division. Command Sergeant Major Eyer and the division color guard represented the division headquar-ters in Korea. Colonel Alexander updated us on the division museum at Camp Red Cloud and a contin-gent including Lieutenant Colo-nel Sundem and Master Sergeant Julian came from the division’s 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Fort Lewis. For those of you who could not attend this year, please make your plans now to attend next year’s reunion from August 23 – 27 in Reno, Nevada. As I write this column, it is the tenth anniversary of the 9-11 at-

Hello All!!! The 2011 reunion went off with ‘sweet’ success! I had many good comments about the accommoda-tions, food, hotel staff and the local restaurants. The only negative aspect was the entertainment after the banquet! We missed you if you were not there! Next year is bigger and better in Reno, Nevada!!! The general membership decided that we will start having our re-unions the third week of Septem-ber and that they will not be held on Sundays. I will see if I can get Reno changed. If not, we will start in 2013 in Columbus, Georgia. Yes, Columbus (Ft. Benning) was selected for 2013. Ft. Benning now has an awesome Infantry Museum that all will enjoy!

tacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001. The nation is still engaged in a Global War on Terrorism. In fact, the Pentagon announced during our re-union that the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Infantry Division has been tasked to deploy once again, this time to Afghani-stan in December for Operation Enduring Freedom. So in closing, let us remember those Warriors who are serving abroad now and are training here in the United States for a future deployment. Finally, let’s recognize our Gold Star families for the tre-mendous sacrifice they have made in the cause of freedom.

Did You Know.......?Let’s begin with, did everyone find a copy of their DD 214 or Discharge Papers, make copies and most importantly give a copy to a family member and explain the impor-tance of these documents? If not, please do so ASAP. You will need them to get the following benefits you have earned. This month’s conversation has to do with: BURIAL AND MEMORIAL BENEFITS. Let’s get started.Burial in VA National Cemeteries Burial in a VA national cemetery is avail-able for eligible veterans, their spouses and dependents at no cost to the family and includes the gravesite, grave-liner, opening and closing of the grave, a head-stone or marker and perpetual care as part of a na-tional shrine. This is where prior planning is important. If your want to be buried in a VA cemetery, you must know the procedures involved: your funeral director should be able to assist you. Gravesites cannot be reserved; how-ever, VA will honor reservations made under previous programs. The veteran and spouse share the same site. Normally the VA does not conduct burials on weekends. Cremation is available at some cemeteries.Headstones and Markers Veterans are eligible for an inscribed head-stone or marker for their grave at any cem-etery – National, State Veterans or private. VA will deliver a headstone or marker at no cost, anywhere in the world. Headstones or markers may be provided even if the grave is also marked with a private one. Flat markers are available in bronze, gran-ite or marble. Upright headstones come in granite or marble. In national cemeteries the style chosen will be consistent with exist-

ing monuments at the place of burial. Niche markers are available to mark columbaria used for cremated remains. Headstones and markers must be inscribed with the name of the deceased, branch of service and years of birth and death. If a privately-purchased headstone or marker already exists in a private cemetery, a medallion identifying the deceased as a veteran can be obtained. Current informa-tion regarding medallion information is located at www.cem.va.gov. Burial Flags VA will furnish a U.S. burial flag to me-morialize:-Veterans who served during wartime or after Jan. 31, 1955-Veterans who were entitled to retired pay for service in the reserve or National GuardReimbursement of Burial Expenses VA will pay a burial allowance up to $2,000 if the veteran’s death is service-con-nected. The person who bore the veteran’s burial expenses may claim reimbursement. There is no time limit for filing reimburse-ment claims service-connected deaths.Burial Allowance VA will pay a $300 burial and funeral al-lowance for veterans who at time of death, were entitled to receive pension or compen-sation or would have been entitled if they were not receiving military retirement pay. If death occurred at a VA facility, VA con-tracted nursing home or a State Veterans nursing home may qualify for allowance.Plot Allowance VA will pay a plot allowance of $300, see above.Military Honors Upon request, DoD will provide military honors consisting of folding and presenta-tion of flag and the playing of “taps”. consists of two or more uniformed members of the armed forces with at least one from the deceased’s branch of service. Arrange-ments must be made by the funeral director only, by calling (1-877-MIL-HONR). Mili-tary organizations, VFW, etc. may assist in providing a final rifle salute. This is a lot to consider, so take your time and make a decision both you and your spouse will be happy with. Once you’ve decided what is best for you, let a family member living outside your home know your wishes. You can pre-plan everything with your fu-neral director and don’t forget those impor-tant discharge papers. Without them, secur-ing the benefits you’ve earned is difficult.

Kitchen Table GangPatriotic Poker Players Helping Veterans

For more than 26 years, The Kitchen Table Gang Trust has been helping veterans and our troops de-ployed overseas. The Kitchen Table Gang Trust is a rag-tag bunch of military types trying to make life a little more pleasant for our hospitalized veterans at VA Hospitals through-out the United States and our Soldiers and Marines deployed overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. These guys are doing some wonderful things for our veterans and our troops overseas, and it all started with a poker game. (They donated a portion of the pot to help veterans and our active-duty troops – are you do-ing anything that cool with your Texas Hold ‘Em ob-session, hmm?) These great guys will tell you all about it on their site, and they’ve got lots of suggestions on how you can express your gratitude to our brave men and women deployed overseas. Who knows, they might even be able to help you!Visit us at http://www.kitchentablegang.org Charlie Taliaferro, Director

Our Friend from France Writes

Please could you write in the next newsletter of the 2nd US ID that I AM GOING TO TAKE CARE OF THE PAPERWORK OF ALL THE VETER-ANS WHO SENT ME A REQUEST TO GET THE FRENCH LEGION D'HONNEUR... but I need to make a sound file, the following from the veterans : - honorable discharge, the date of landing in France and the campaigns in France they were involved in, the battles they fought in France, the time they stayed in France, if they were wounded and if they got med-als....THAT IS WHAT I NEED to be able to address the files to the proper place... I AM AFRAID a little note telling me: "I am so and so and I was in France at that time" won't be enough....I need proof... even though I believe all American soldiers who fought in France should get it automatically But this is the way it is.....Also the file must be made while the veteran is still alive.... I know it is complicated for these nice old gentlemen and their families... but I have to comply. Thank you so much for everything, warmest re-gards.... yours in "THE SECOND TO NONE"...
