FROM OUR EDITOR

Greetings from the South,

Warm wishes to those in the north. I got a bit of a taste this last week while at 2017 Imaging in San Antonio. No, I didn’t see the Alamo. I determined I will return when it is more picturesque and pleasant to take images.

A big thanks goes out to our January host, Tom Giles. And to Tom and Phil for providing the educational part of our meeting.

Congratulations to Phil for earning the “2016 Photographer of the Year” Award, and to Gloria for “Image of the Year” Award, and to those who achieved their gold bars. Carol Clifton received the 2016 “Special Services Award”. This award is given for “long time dedication and service to the Wisconsin Indianhead Professional Photographers Association and it’s members”.

We welcome our new Executive Board Members and thank those who gave so generously of their time and talents throughout 2016. It takes many hands to make an organization a success

The 2017 Imaging USA was exciting, as always. It was my pleasure to visit with my Wisconsin Friends, as well as my new Florida friends. My biggest thrill was to present Chris Vander Velde with her Master of Photography Degree. I am so proud of her, as she has earned this in record time with not only her beautiful prints, but the conventions and classes she has attended, as well as her volunteer services. She is a ‘go getter’ and it has earned her her wings. She looks forward to earning her Artist Degree very soon as she is very close to attaining it. Husband Brian made a special wine to celebrate the occassion, and what a party we had, celebrating with many familiar faces.

The WPPA is proud to host the North Central District Competition during the WPPA State Convention in March. The District competition this year will be the last, as they will be discontinuing it in the future. Don’t miss this opportunity to seal your images prior to the IPC. It gives you another chance to make changes where needed for the final competition. Make sure to read the new rules for IPC, as they have made some important changes. Good luck to all who enter. Be sure to register for the Spring Convention soon. There is a great line up of speakers. Don’t miss out.

It's the age of recycling, isn't it? Here I am with a gavel shoved into my hand, again. Yes that's right, I've been here before. The previous year I lead the Indianhead Professional Photographers Association was 1994 a little over 20 years ago. And I stepped in to finish a term in 2012 for a president that resigned. Where has the time gone?

I feel that, as an organization, we have to thank Tom Giles, The White Wolf, for steering the Indianhead canoe for the last two years. I'm not surprised that he agreed to do a double term because ever since I've been a member, which is a few years short of Tom's membership tenure, he has been a consistent attendee and officer. Just to let you know, he has been the IPPA's corporate agent since 1995, when I left office as president, at least that's the way I remember it. And, he has been membership chair since Roy Rogers was a boy! Thank you, Tom, you're a

vital part of our organization. We need people

like Tom: passionate and giving to their fellow photographers. And, you know what, there are a number of members that fit that description: Neil Geiger, president for the two years prior to Tom and then program chair, Ginny Otto, past president, who worked her way through “the chairs,” who moved out of state for retirement with her husband Tom, but still serves two roles for the group. Thank you Neil and Ginny. Yes, we have some heroic members, but they are not limited to the “old kids.” We have a number of new stars moving up. I feel that we have a great future.

We are first and foremost, photographic artists and Indianhead's purpose is to advance our members by helping one another. We put our hearts and souls into our images so we always have high aspirations for them and any negative comments about our work hurts. But, as one photographer said at a gathering I attended a number of years ago, “Hey, it's art!” Translation: Not everyone will like it. Pierre August Renoir stubbornly kept painting his portraits even though he had a very difficult time hanging paintings in galleries and shows because curators didn't like his style or subject matter (the rage at the time was landscapes and still life). While he was able to make a modest living as a portrait artist, he also wanted positive public recognition. That desire comes with the territory.

So to help you with that desire, at the November meeting we decided to expand the image entry limit to four all year long. We'll still have the specified and open categories and you can group your images in them any way you want. Imaging chair, Stu Glaser, made the suggestion in order to expand the number of images that we see at each

meeting. The more you exercise, the stronger you get. Keep this advice from American author, Kurt Vonnegut

(1922-2007) given in 2006 to some high school English students: “Practice any art, however well or badly, not

to get money or fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what's inside you, to make your soul grow.”

Another Successful Imaging USA

It was chilly and windy in San Antonio, but a real break for those from the Midwest and northern states. Such a shame, as there was much to see right out our windows. The convention was held down town with the mall, hotels, and River Walk at our fingertips.

The River Walk is usually bustling every day and night of the week, with the tour boats traveling up and down the winding water way for tourists to enjoy. However, 40 degrees marks the cut off of such an adventure. It did warm up enough on a couple days for those brave enough to take advantage. On Friday it was so windy and cold that the hosts and hostesses of all the restaurants along the way were wrapped in their Mexican ponchos, cuddled by the nearest outdoor heaters. The outdoor tables were empty, with chairs donning a poncho at each seat in hopes that someone would brave the out of doors. A Saturday stroll was freshly donned with frozen plants, having not weathered the cold.

As usual the convention was a huge success, with wonderful speakers, pre-conference hands-on classes, vendors and a trade show buzzing with new equipment, frames, equipment, services, and labs. Thank you to all the vendors who gave of their time and energy so that we might fill our needs.

The Awards Ceremony was wonderful. IPPA member Chris Vander Velde received her Master of Photography award, along with other Wisconsin members. It’s so rewarding to see our own members achieve such an outstanding award. Chris was also awarded a one year membership in the ASP to celebrate her achievement.

The ASP Gala was fantastic as usual. Many awards were presented, and the “Best of the Best” shown on the big screens. Congratulations to all who received awards. They had on hand a photographer to take pictures not only of the award winners, but anyone attending. What fun it was to grab a friend and have a souvenier of this event.

I’m not sure what was more exciting; the Welcoming Party or the Closing Party! The closing party had mimes, Mexican dancers, Mexican food, a Slow Motion Video studio, and dancing. It was a true southern celebration to remember.

I met so many new friends at this event and photographers who have so much to share. This is a wonderful opportunity to network and support each other in our profession.

Next year’s event will be held in Nashville, Tennessee. It promises to be another spectacular convention. Plan now to attend and mark it on your calendar before you forget.
