Newsletter DeadlineMay 20, 2013

Wow! What a great meeting we had in April. Our thanks to American Color for sponsoring Mary and Mark Bortz. Their Character Workshop was the greatest. And thanks to Erwin; the coolest model ever! His sense of humor had us rolling in laughter. It was great to experience this journey of creating unique images from beginning to end. If you don’t use Light Room or Lucis Art you should really be inspired at this point. And our grateful thanks to Laura Sedivy for hostessing, not to mention her son’s hot from the oven cookies! We welcome our new board and wish them a wonderful season, full of new ideas. We are proud to be a strong organization in this world of uncertainty. It isn’t just being a part of an organization, but instead, of a wonderful extended family. It is hard to imagine not participating in such a fantastic group of creative people, sharing the same interests and learning from one another. Our congratulations to those receiving their Fellowship awards and to Kirk Kolpitcke for his Photograph of the Year Award. He was also the recipient in January of his Master of Photography Award from the PPA. We are proud that he is a member of our organization. He has provided us with his knowledge of hand posing, judging skills and sharing the education he has received over the years. He is a real asset to our group. Being Editor, it is always hardest to mention your own awards. I can just thank you receiving the Photographer of the Year Award and encourage all of you to enter our monthly competition. It is guaranteed to improve your daily work and help you to receive the awards you deserve. Photography is a growing process. Set your goals high, stick with them, and you will achieve much as well as succeed in your business. Next month prove’s to be another winner with Christie Kline on “Babies Dream...Why Can’t We?” Be sure to join us in Stevens Point to fill your head with new ideas.

Attention:If anyone has received awards, please email your name and results to

A Note From Our New President

See our newly updated

Indianhead Websitewww.indianheadphotographers.org

Spring is here. Love is in the air and brides are lookingfor great wedding photographers who are in to creatingbeautiful memories.

Itʼs hard to imagine, after 34 years in the business, Iʼd be talking about and remembering my first wedding - a double wedding, no less. I was asked to assist my cousin who worked for Roger Crocker Studio out ofSheboygan, WI. What an experience! I told myself that I would never photograph another wedding. Yet here I am 34 plus years later, still photographing weddings and loving it.

I believe that what makes a good wedding photographer is one who keeps an open mind, learns from others, and makes his photography his own style.

Cudoos go out to the late Monte Zucker and Clay Blackmore who continues on in the Monte Zucker style. The late Ron Warwick, Patsy Hodge, Hanson Fong, and David Ziserare just a few who have inspired me and continue to do so.

It is my hope that you have the opportunity to learn from the wedding pros of today. Take a little piece of what you learn and add it to your wedding photography.

Christie KlineChristie is a second generation photographer operating out of Germantown, IL. Christie’s passion for photography started at an early age, working with her mother who established the studio in 1977. Now a co-owner with her mother, Christie took over the shooting in 2002. Growing up surrounded by the love of photography, Christie is proud to carry on her mothers’ dream.

The studio, “Sonshine Portrait Design”, is located in a one of a kind studio built in 2006. While babies and children are the studio’s specialty, they serve a broad range of clients. Christie feels that by getting to know each client individually, she can create a product as unique as they are. The end result is a portrait tailor made for each client. Christie’s talent for design, light and final composition sets her apart from her competition. Her personality and attention to detail keeps her clients coming back. Her new “Posh Collection” has receive rave reviews from clients and other photographers alike.

Christie holds the Professional Photographers of America, “Master of Photography” degree and is a Certified Professional Photographer. She is a member of Professional Photographers of America, Northern Illinois Professional Photographers and Professional Photographers of Illinois. Since 2006, Christie has won numerous awards for her photography on a local, state, district, and international level. Not so many years ago I sat envious at the numberous awards being presented at our April meeting. I had watched intently the months of competitions that preceeded this special day, and thought how I would never be able to compete with the talents of such wonderful photographers as these. I admired the work and dedication they had given to their craft. I was envious, not only of the awards, but their accomplishments over the years.

I soon began to realize that the Fellowship Awards received were given to those who gave their time and efforts, not only in attending meetings, but holding offices, entering the print competitions and being active in other photographic organizations. I already knew that for me, knowing other photographers and learning from the speakers was tops, but perhaps by being a bigger part of the organization I could benefit even more.

Then they presented the “Photograph of the Year”. Wow! How wonderful it would be to hang that on my wall someday. Imagine... of all the images entered in the past year, this image was selected as the best. To top that off, the next award was “Photographer of the Year”. Now that would be really incredible. But for me, that didn’t seem within reach for a lifetime. These photographers did work well beyond what I could ever imagine doing. But after some thought I decided that, although I never dreamed I could achieve that goal, I would make it mine. After all, everyone needs a goal and it would give me something to work toward. I spent a lot of years watching other photographers receive these awards, thrilled for them to be able to reach that peak. I made up my mind to enter at every meeting I could. When I began. I told myself that it wasn’t about me, but the images I presented. Whatever the judges said, good or bad, I could not take to heart, but use it as a tool to improve my work. This was a learning experience I am forever grateful for. I soon learned that the more the judges picked apart my work, the more potential they thought the image had to go further in competition. So I soon looked forward to the comments and criticism that the judges made. I listened intently and tried to make those changes in my work.

“If I Can Do It, So Can You!”

I also learned about consistency. One year I noticed that the recipient of the Photographer of the Year did not have really high scores, however, the consistancy of entering was the big factor in her achieving it. I think that opened several people’s eyes in knowing that they, too, could qualify for this award. A number of photographers began to enter at each meeting and it proved to be helpful in the outcome. The benefits of entering each month were seen in their work as well. This last month I am proud to say that I received this prestegious award for the second year in a row. My records show that I have entered at every Indianhead meeting I could. The consistancy is there, and over the years it as given me the opportunity to improve tremendously. Since that day I made this goal my own, I have made an effort as well to enter in the WPPA, PPA, and District competitions. Each time I have pushed myself to do better and better in the quality of my work. As a result I have been able to achieve many prestigious awards. I would never have dreamed to be where I am today. I am now two merits away from the PPA Master of Photography Award. My goal is to not only achieve that this year, but to merit all four entries and go for the gold as well. I have learned in life that if you set your goals high, you can achieve them if you put enough effort into it.

However, this is not about me. It is meant to encourage those who have not yet began to enter competition, but who would love to improve on their work, someday qualifying for these awards as well. Perhaps it is a bit intimidating to enter along side those who seem to get the high scores, or maybe you don’t think your images are good enough for competition. You’ll never know unless you try. And there are many people out there who would love to help you if you just ask. We all started somewhere and remember how it was the first time we entered.

I commend those new members who jump in without fear of the water, however, also realize that not everyone is ready and stand at the side of the pool waiting for the right moment. Make this your moment. Ask someone to help you get started in competition. You’ll soon learn to appreciate your efforts and begin seeing the improvement of your own work. Be consistant in your efforts and don’t give up. Enter each month and watch your scores grow. Climb this amazing ladder to success.

When I started in photography, I set one specific goal per year. Make this yours. You only have to gain by doing so. The water is warm and we are there to help ease you in.

“Aim for the moon and reach the stars!”. You, too can reach your goals.

Additional note: Each time you enter, you receive one point towards your Fellowship Degree. Each print receiving a score of 80 or more and each Gold Arrow Award gives you more points. Attending meetings, hosting a meeting, judging, holding a Board of Directors or an appointed position all are ways to achieve your Fellowship Award and become more active in Indianhead. Ask questions. Volunteer. We offer you the opportunity to achieve your goals.
