Infra Growth Is ImmInentIndia’s growth is visible with the govern-ment willingness to make it happen. And this is likely to happen because there is a huge thrust on the infrastructure growth. Not only the government is stressing on developing the existing infrastructure but also trying to develop new infrastructure. For example, the creation of smart cities is one of the leading infrastructure building activities. There are a number of new airports setting up in the country because the Modi govern-ment has created a mandate to make the smaller cities con-nected with the bigger ones so that the development happens all across and equally. BFSI is another sector, which is growing quite rapidly. The central government has again created a mandate to open savings bank account for all the cities. Similarly, railway platforms are getting connected with wireless connectivity for the travelers to access internet. The entire government sector is becoming digitized. All the

documents are turning to digital format. in this situation, one can well imagine what kind of IT consumption it might incur. There will be a requirement of huge space of data centers. These data centers would be connected with a good number of storage, networking and security solutions so that the operation becomes seamless and secure. There will be a consumption of huge number of security and surveillance appliances. Last but not the least, ‘Make in India’ is going to be a huge consumer of technology products and solutions. In the latest development, defense sector looks to be adopt-ing a lot of modernization in order to make the entire sector defense ready and combat ready. It is obviously for the reason of challenges from the neighboring countries. It will consume a lot of surveillance solutions along with big data and analytics technologies. Because development of events in the country shows that the neighboring countries would inflict financial and physical injury to the country and they would not only take the rout of physical retaliation and onslaught but also cyber warfare. There is possibility that there will be growth of hacking in the country specially targeted on the critical installations.Towards making the things happen, government is seeking support from the global market and it appears that most of the developing countries are acceding the request and finding this as an opportunity of investment in an alternative location. So net net…the growth in the infrastructure market in the country is going to be huge in a few years from now. Probably, it will be second largest or at par with China by 2020.

Extreme Networks is all set to acquire Zebra’s wireless LAN (WLAN) business in an all-cash transaction. The transaction is expected to close in the Q4 of 2016 (which is the Q2 of Fy 2017 for Extreme Networks).

New Fortinet research identifies cloud and vulnerability in IT systems as the two greatest concerns for IT decision makers; uncovers trend favoring actionable threat intelligence, faster incident response and managed security services.

In some sectors, such as healthcare, it took 53 percent of APAC respondents days, months or even years to spot breaches.Such a deficiency in rapid, effective threat identification and response is proven to be highly costly to breached organizations as sensitive data is lost, systems are compromised and brand reputation is damaged.

Indian respondents cited ‘improved information security strategy’ as the greatest value of threat intelligence (61 percent in India and 52 percent in APAC) followed by ‘improved prevention of attacks’ (59 percent in India and 53 percent in APAC) and ‘improved risk management’ (59 percent in India and 55 percent in APAC).

Reaffirming its commitment to India, Huawei today announced it will start to manufacture smartphones in India in collaboration with leading Sketch-to-Scale solutions provider, Flex, in October. Polycom announced the completion of its acquisition by affiliates of Siris Capital Group (“Siris” or “Siris Capital”) in a transaction reflecting an equity value of approximately $2.0 billion in cash. Polycom’s stock will cease trading on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol PLCM, effective today.

Initial results from the IDC 2016 Global IoT Decision Maker Survey highlights that 25.2% of Asia Pacific excluding Japan (APeJ) organizations have launched IoT solutions and expects an additional 46% to deploy in the next 12 months. Furthermore, the survey reveals 62% of organizations see IoT as strategic to their business in order to effectively compete in the market.

The survey, now in its third year, serves as a way to gain insights from enterprise IT and business decision makers about their perception of IoT as well as their early deployments or plans for deployment of IoT solutions. Topics covered in the survey include: levels of enterprise awareness of IoT; deployment plans; IoT adoption drivers and inhibitors; perceptions of IoT vendors and vendor selection criteria; organizational factors; and security, cloud, and analytics requirements.

HCL Infotech Deploys e-PDS in Andaman Islands

HCL Infotech has implemented electronic public distribution system (e-PDS), ensuring greater transparency and efficient distribu-tion of commodities to beneficiaries. The e-PDS has been implemented as a pilot project in Andaman & Nicobar Isles, wherein beneficiaries of the digital PDS will be issued smart ration cards covering entire South Andaman, excluding little Andaman.

DSL AND LTE BONDING: THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

hile the majority of city dwellers have reaped the benefits of increasingly fast broadband networks,

rural customers have been left to make do with sluggish progress and sub-standard networks. For residents in these areas, the situation is becoming increasingly problematic, with the DSL networks they rely on, being unable to handle demanding new services such as video streaming and large

uploads. For example, if we compare the average speeds

of DSL, which hovers around 6Mbps, against an average broadband speed of 28.9Mbps, it is clear there is a huge discrepancy in the level of service. As online (Value Added Services)VAS compa-nies are now adding services catered to higher network speeds, such as HD streaming, customers on slower bandwidths are essentially being cut off from certain areas of the web, including add-on

services provided by CSPs. Unfortunately, where fixed line broadband is concerned, this is unlikely to change any time soon. Fast connections require expensive infrastructure along with significant labour costs, meaning for rural areas, where there are a limited number of subscribers, there is no return on investment for CSPs. When this is con-sidered along with the regulations that prevent damage to the countryside, it is understandable why telcos are reluctant to extend fixed-line services to these areas. Unfortunately, as older copper wires slow down the broadband signal as it travels further away from the telephone exchange, it is those that are hardest to reach, that are suffering most.

With single play DSL and mobile networks still unable to meet consumers’ needs, a solution that combines the benefits of both of these methods of delivery provides a more practical solution.

Combining the LTE and DSLThe development of new hybrid routers, which are able to combine DSL and LTE networks are sparking a new approach to the way broadband is delivered to rural areas. These devices are able to pick up a mobile data network and combine this with the DSL connection through the use of intel-ligent software. This allows the high bandwidth of the LTE network to boost speeds for DSL customers in areas where more advanced fixed-line services are not an option. Whereas the DSL bandwidth can be used for less intensive tasks, and forms the primary method of connectivity, the LTE connectivity can be activated when more demanding tasks such as video streaming are underway. In this way, customers can reap the reliability benefits of their DSL connection, while experiencing the high bandwidth benefits of 4G as and when they need it.

However, it is not just customers that will benefit from this new method of delivery. Instead of having to upgrade old DSL connections, CSPs can now use telephone masts to boost these networks, allowing them to get the most out of their old copper infrastructure. This has meant

for approximately 67 per cent of the $124-130 billion market. Additionally, public cloud services revenue in India is expected to reach $1.26 bil-lion in 2016, with a growth of 30.4 percent YoY. The public cloud market alone in the country was estimated to staggeringly treble to US$ 1.9 billion by 2018 from US$ 638 million in 2014. The main drivers for continued growth of data center co-location and hosting market in India are increased penetration of internet (including in rural areas) and rapid emergence of e-commerce.

IT Infrastructure in Enterprises TodayThe rise of technology trends like Cloud and BYOD have transformed the face of IT infra-structure. Traditionally infrastructure involving an intricate system of servers, storage devices and networking equipment has now been replaced by the dynamic phenomenon of IaaS: Infrastructure as a service. Large installations have been replaced by small datacenters and public clouds. Enter-prises no longer have to invest on infrastructure before using new software licenses as this can now

be done through a cloud with the infrastructure delivered as a service from the vendor.

In one of the most recent corporate stories, the founder of one of the world’s biggest on premise IT services vendor Oracle quite famously turned its approach to Cloud and literally urged its cus-tomers to move to the cloud with Oracle. This development and massive new offering from Oracle comes on the back of an indirect reversal from the way the company denounced the cloud business just a few years back. The cloud based IT infrastructure has taken the enterprise world by storm as corporations have been widely embrac-ing concepts like IaaS, SaaS and PaaS.

However, though impactful, not all functions of an enterprise are suited for Cloud. Many organiza-tions have started using IaaS balanced with mod-ernized robust infrastructure to deliver agility, cost and quality of service. This brought around a new concept of Hybrid IT. According to research firm Gartner, the emergence of bimodal IT has led to lot of investments in Mode 1, and is an increas-ing focus on building Mode 2 infrastructure.

The traditional IT infrastructure market includes server, storage and enterprise networking equip-ment. Aman Munglani of Gartner says, “In 2016, data center modernization will continue to be key driver for infrastructure spending in India. Auto-mation and orchestration are becoming high pri-orities for Indian leaders as well. Software defined infrastructures, and an increased focus on disaster recovery and business continuity, will also lead to an increased spend on infrastructure.”

However, recent happening show that areas such as cloud, software defined storage, software defined network together with integrated systems have been the areas of investment for enterprises. Gartner’s research experts also say that the public cloud is increasingly becoming relevant for data center managers and IT leaders in India. Addi-tionally, although it is still relatively small, DevOps is another space which has gained momentum within IT operations teams in India. Changing face of IT Infra Business: IaaSInfrastructure-as-a-Service or IaaS is a seamless way of delivering cloud computing services (including storage devices, networks and servers) on demand. The concept is witnessing massive growth backed by the rising demand to reduce capex on IT hardware to store data, generated through various smart devices by individuals and enterprises. As Fujitsu’s Andy Stevenson says, “It’s the perfect service for organizations that have a greater need for cloud than hardware. IaaS will exhibit significant growth of around 35-40%, and be one of the largest growth areas of overall public cloud services, worldwide.”

With the influx on IaaS, the market dynamics

too have altered. Old stalwarts like IBM, VMware and Cisco have been replaced by new entrants like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Google as leading players in this space. This has led to further proliferation of IaaS as a mainstream choice for organizations. Easily available low-cost infrastruc-ture, transparency in utilizing the services and their costs, with high scalability and instant imple-mentation along with pay per use model are some of the key drivers for this market. As Stevenson puts it, “Many large enterprises have chosen to use these public cloud services for new, often digital, initiatives while using private cloud for their more traditional, core application workloads.”

One trend that is expected to gain prominence is the adoption of the Hybrid IT model. The chal-lenge of adopting Hybrid IT will be experienced by larger commercial and public sector bodies that previously invested in on premise existing IT. The hybrid model is appealing to enterprises because of its combination of legacy IT along with Public, Private and managed cloud services. Stevenson continues, “Organizations will recognize that a Hybrid IT approach will allow them to achieve maximum gain from the existing IT while being prepared to expand into new areas. We believe

son says, “The dynamic business environment found in India is a great match for IaaS adoption. Whether a new start-up or a rapidly growing business looking for IT infrastructure with low overheads matched to their business levels – IaaS delivers. Organizations of all sizes can benefit from the fact that IaaS services are delivered from datacentre locations that would generally be of a quality higher than may achieved from locally hosted infrastructure. The rapid adoption of mobile also means that users of IaaS hosted appli-cations could also remove one of the potential barriers cloud services – indeed actually making cloud service more suitable.”

Quite literally, India has been bouncing ahead of most economies in the widespread adoption of mobile in all aspect of community and business life. As mobile and cloud services are complimen-tary in nature, therefore use of all types of cloud service, i.e. IaaS, PaaS and SaaS are expected to accelerate in the near future. However, Gartner also forecaster that the growth of IT infrastructure initially would be slow till say 2020, climbing at a pace similar to the 1% hike from 2015 to 2016. The deterrent forecast to the growth in the Indian IT infrastructure market might initially pose significant challenges to the players in the space including Cisco, HPE, Juniper Networks, Huawei,

Lenovo, Oracle, IBM and Dell-EMC among others but once proliferation occurs the market is expected to gain traction. Gartner Research Director Naveen Mishra believes, “Public Cloud is increasingly becoming relevant for Datacenters and IT leaders in India. This is an area where enterprises are focusing heavily in terms of their optimization efforts and evaluating software defined networking as this is becoming a barrier for seamless digital experience.”

On Premise to Cloud: Organizational ChallengesWith the recent developments in the space, Cloud-based IT infrastructure has taken momentum due to a number of pros like cost-effectiveness, ease of installation, scalability and mobility. Stevenson continues, “This has led to the rise of Hybrid Cloud where organizations leverage different cloud models depending on considerations such as the application, their attitude to risk, or maybe restrictions they may have on data location and residency.”

For organizations already using o premise IT services, the biggest issue when transitioning to cloud is the cost aspect. “There is the big challenge of expenditure for enterprise’s migration from premise infrastructure to cloud. Along with the

existing investment poured into the infrastruc-ture, the cost of moving the workload to loud can be a major concern in terms of skills as well as management tools,” adds Stevenson. Additionally, the data carried by the infrastructure is sensitive and confidential. Therefore multiple red tapes and authorizations have to be surpassed in order to complete the process. The next challenge comes in finding the right and skilled resources to handle the transition, and ensure that the work carries on.

Hitachi Data Systems’ Srikant Attravanam gives an overview of the current scenario, “Organiza-tions are adopting different cloud models to sup-port their business effectively. Enterprises require mobilization of data and content to be delivered securely, where cloud plays a major role. Accord-ing to the 2015 Economist Study conducted by Hitachi, about 70 percent of organizations use private clouds for file storage, archive, big data repository, collaboration and productivity. Cloud Products, Solutions and Services are designed to help customers reduce risk as they enable shift to cloud elasticity and pay-as-you-go efficiency with-out compromising business-critical services and service levels.’’

Industry Advice to CXOsWhen adopting cloud-based services in their enterprise’s IT infrastructure, it is crucial for the CXOs handling the IT end to be fully aware of the dynamics of the technologies in use. There need to be a well administered strategy with clarity on what the implementations bring to the organiza-tion. For a cloud based IT infrastructure to be successfully implemented, a CIO should be well aware of the industry and should only choose an IaaS vendor, the offerings of which are in line with the IaaS expectations of the enterprise. Fujitsu’s Andy Stevenson says, “IaaS has brought about a

radical change in the manner we purchase and manage our IT infrastructure. There are certain things that CXOs should be mindful of while selecting their IaaS vendor. Firstly, the CXO as well the vendor should have clarity about the business objective, as to what they hope to achieve with this service. Secondly, the CXO should ensure that he has all the levels of access required to along with the knowledge of possible modifica-tions that the software might require.”

A CIO is responsible for the relationship between the enterprise and the vendor. It is he who needs to have all aspects of the technology transfer under his nose. IT decision makers should have a thorough understanding of the processes and aspects like security, maintenance and overheads, cost effectiveness and ROI. “Security and cost are other important factors to be kept on priority. Vendors often repackage and resell from various parties, therefore the CXO should know who

exactly owns the infrastructure that he is purchas-ing while being aware of the vendor’s support and monitoring system,” adds Andy Stevenson.

It is but unavoidable that some parts of their organizations IT infrastructure needs to be on cloud. The concept of Hybrid IT is not just the next step in IT infrastructure but the way for-ward for organizations seeking to scale business operations and grow at a rapid pace. “To remain relevant, Indian IT organizations need to shift rapidly to a new paradigm that supports the rapid pace and new technologies of the digital enterprise that also incorporates traditional, mission-critical IT systems and applications,” opines HDS’ Srikant Attravanam, “Diversified products and solutions with proficiency in Data Analytics, Internet of Things, and connected intelligence help organiza-tions to design, deploy and leverage economically superior storage architecture.”

IT infrastructure is crucial for the success of an organization.”

Concepts empowered by Cloud technology like mobility, BYOD, IoT and Big Data have given organizations new avenues to amplify productiv-ity and efficiency by seamlessly streamlining the operations and the workforce. Having a hybrid infrastructure lets organizations push the con-suming and scalable tasks to the cloud-based IaaS, keeping the core applications on the on premise IT infrastructure.

The idea of cloud should not be to move forward choosing it as the better option over the traditional server, storage and networking equipment combi-nations but rather CIOs and IT Decision Makers should carefully understand the capabilities of the offerings and how they would benefit the specific applications or operations of the enterprise. Only then will it be possible to be sure which aspects of the business are better served on premise and which needs the scalability and accessibility of the cloud. The key for having a seamlessly produc-tive IT infrastructure is having a well-planned Hybrid IT Infrastructure where an organization uses a mix of the on premise, public cloud and the private cloud in a way that each specific task or application uses the apt infrastructure to enable it to better solve the purposes of the organization.

In today’s competitive and over regulated era where profitability is under severe pressure, organiza-tions can turn to RPA to provide a fresh set of lever to further optimize their operations.”

BENEFITS OUTDO THE RISKSRobots and automation processes are typically deployed behind firewalls and intrusion detection systems as they operate on the same internal network as any other internal mission critical enterprise systems. Unlike humans, robots are programmed pieces of code which cannot be tricked into divulging information or download-ing unauthorized software, and lack any motive to violate existing policies. “As such only a change of access by an administrator could only provide unauthorized use,” remarks Tejinderpal Singh, “Organizations should take care to not RPA any system admin level tasks/processes that can allow for such access.”

biggest IT giants change its course of business much averse to past claims. Oracle top boss Larry Ellison in his own brash yet convincing style announced the recent developments at the world’s leading enterprise solution provider’s end, signaling a remarkable shift in business offerings, endorsing cloud and hybrid architecture as the future of enterprise business for the first time.

I Finally endorsing the CloudIn one of the biggest homecoming statements on cloud yet, Ellison asked the Oracle faithful to brace up for one of the biggest technology shifts in the IT industry as Oracle finally takes the Cloud business seriously. “We are in the middle of a generational shift in computing that is no less important than our shift to personal computing, when mainframes and minicomputers dominated our industry.” Ellison wasn’t just talking about going full throttle forward in the cloud business. This also marked a gigantic shift in the Oracle

thought process and business ideologies. Only a few years ago, top Oracle faces like Ellison and CEO Mark Hurd were so averse the whole idea and believed that cloud computing wasn’t the obvious technology dive in future. Ellison firmly stated that the cloud wasn’t a worry for Oracle with a witty pun, “Salesforce and Netsuite have been around almost ten years, and Oracle’s world hasn’t come to an end.” This was a bold statement which clearly emphasized that Cloud wasn’t a mainstream prospect for Oracle.

Oracle’s Ghost from the pastOracle and Ellison’s past comments were but obvious as the vast array of Amazon and Google applications running in the cloud on top of a platform that is not Oracle, would undeniably be the biggest long-term threat to Oracle’s enterprise business. Oracle has been a fairly forward company which makes most of its money selling hefty programmed solutions and costly one time licenses to its clients with a 22% annual mainte-nance fee to top it all.

With cloud platforms and mainly with Amazon Web Services, scaling up is never an issue and much easier than before. On the other hand, scaling up with Oracle meant installing new hardware and purchasing new licenses. This is a dynamic change in how businesses are moving forward today, much averse to Oracle strategy. This is a hardline for Oracle and demands a strong restructuring for the company to stay on top of the business and avoid losing clients.

The shift in Industry dynamicsEllsion referred to his company’s Cloud services as the World’s most complete, open and integrated Cloud computing platform in his keynote presentation. It was predicted earlier that legacy enterprise IT providers who did not have cloud services would face the reality hard. Since then, EMC tumbled into the arms of Michael Dell, HP called off its public cloud, VMware was criticized by financial analysts for having its business “eaten alive” by the public cloud, and Citrix split apart at its shareholder’s call, much like Symantec.

It is commendable that Oracle has been able to indulge in cloud and successfully enrich its portfolio while its legacy competition in VWware, EMC, IBM and SAP struggle to keep up with the new generation of IT service providers. Only one of Oracle’s competitors, Microsoft, as Ellison rightly had been able to cross ‘the chasm’ and now competes on all three levels IaaS, PaaS and SaaS.

These dynamic alterations in the industry have resulted in new players being at the forefront of enterprise business. Larry explained the change in competition that Oracle has today as now it vies for the applications market against Workday and Salesforce instead of SAP, Amazon and Microsoft instead of IBM in the platform market and its big-gest nemesis of the day Amazon in infrastructure instead of IBM and EMC.

the enterprise. Ellison declared emphatically that with its unique multi-tenant architecture and in-memory technology, “Oracle’s flagship database drives robust enterprise workloads faster than the nearest competitor.”

Apart from the Oracle Database 12c Release 2, Ellison introduced more than 20 new Oracle Cloud Platform and Application services. Industry-first innovations highlighted in his keynote were a new faster and more scalable Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) and new Adaptive Intelligence Applications that use machine learning to power the next generation of Cloud applications. Ellison exclaimed, “We have more SaaS applications by a huge margin than any other cloud services provider. We have HCM suite, CRM Suite, Customer Experience Suite plus lots and lots of industry suites as well. And we’re constantly, constantly adding to our footprint.”

Being sighted as the most remarkable of the new Oracle announcements is a new family of offerings named ‘Oracle Cloud at Customer’. These offerings provide CIOs with choices for enterprise software deployment making it easier for organizations to move to the cloud and reap the benefits of the Oracle Public Cloud Services

from the Oracle Cloud or their own datacenter. While being available on-premises, the new service is still completely compatible with Oracle Cloud, providing the same services in terms of performance, scaling, and pricing.

Knocking AWS off its Perch It can be conveniently said that the theme of Larry Ellison’s keynote was based on giving Oracle a competitive edge and affinity against Amazon, its biggest competitor in the cloud space. In his signature ‘in your face’ style, Larry said, “Our new second-generation datacenters offer twice as many cores as Amazon, twice as much memory as Amazon, four times as much storage as Amazon, and more than 10 times the I/O capacity of Amazon. But you have to be willing to pay less. If you’re not willing to pay less, you can’t place the order.”

These are bold industry claims to make and though it might be debated that Ellison went a bit too far, it was important for him to set a standard in terms of the technology before Oracle can even dream of dethroning Amazon which has a market share eight times that of Oracle. Ellison and Oracle understood pretty early that for them to be

the face of cloud computing, almost all of Oracle’s offerings would have to be rewritten for the cloud. In the meantime, Amazon Web Services took the IT industry by storm and created a 2.8 Billion dollar cloud computing market for itself in less than ten years.

Amazon has been comfortably sitting at the top of the cloud market with an attractive pricing and margins due to its highly automated and constantly improving offerings. Oracle on the other hand with its endless resources and globe consuming infrastructure, is just gearing up for the fight. Ellison knows that to compete with Amazon, Oracle would have to welcome a shift in the mindset, “People pay a lot of attention to cost and we have to be lower cost and higher performance against our number one infrastructure competition Amazon.” That being said, he is confident that Oracle will come out as worthy competitors and give Amazon a run for their money eventually, “We’re very proud of our second generation of IaaS. We’re going to be focusing on it and aggressively featuring it not only during Oracle OpenWorld but for the remainder of this fiscal year and next fiscal year and the year after that. Amazon’s lead is over; it is going to have serious competition going forward.”

Will Oracle succeed in its claims?Oracle has gone all in with its promise of delivering the best cloud. It has more than 8,000 customers in its pipeline which is excluding

NetSuite. While Oracle is basing its plans on the already strong On-premise customer base, when Ellison urged them to endorse the cloud, the cloud he meant was Oracle. This signifies the frailty of Oracle’s ambitions at this moment as it aims to expand its large customer back and not lose the loyal ones to other cloud platforms.

Oracle’s cloud strategy is spurred by a number of acquisitions sing 2011 apart from boosting internal R&D. Oracle has acquired a number of cloud companies in RightNow, Eloqua, BigMa-chines, BlueKai, TOA Technologies, DataLogix, Textura , OPower and most recently NetSuite. This shows that it intends to build a whole new cloud workforce in tandem with its on premise business. “Oracle surely appears more focused than it has been in the past,” as Gartner Analyst Chad Eschinger believes, “They obviously want to acquire solutions that are filling white space in industry specific verticals.”

From the Indian front, Shailender Kumar, Managing Director, Oracle India believes that the Oracle cloud will gradually catch momentum in both enterprises and government deployments. He remarks, “We are confident that the par-ticipants who attended our conference this year benefited from our unique perspective on how cloud can lead them to the future at a global level. Specifically for India, Oracle and the Government of Maharashtra signed a MoU intended to accel-erate the state’s digital transformation initiatives. Leveraging Oracle Cloud solutions, Oracle and

the Government of Maharashtra will develop the State’s smart city program, with the goal of making the State’s urban landscape more livable and inclusive, while driving economic growth.”

As per Ellison, the Oracle business has seen a lot of shifts and now is a complete end to end IT provider with offerings in all three tiers of the cloud. At the OpenWorld, he said, “So here’s the irony of it all. We went into the SaaS business and came to understand that required us to be in the platform business. And we went into the platform business and came to understand we had to be in the infrastructure-as-a-service business. That’s how we got to where we are today.”

The IT industry has seen a massive shake up where the original kings, the IT hardware and software providers are being taken over by Internet based companies. The shift has demanded changes in strategy as well as business offerings. Oracle, though late, has been able to introduce Cloud in its mainstream business. Some argue that it might be too late for Oracle to snatch away the pole position from Amazon but it is just in time to save its business from stagnancy, a fate suffered by giants like SAP. Talking of a real possibility of Oracle staking its claim and coming out with it, it is still early days for the world’s lead-ing solution provider, but this latest development has finally confirms the new direction of the global enterprise IT industry. Will Oracle be able to knock Amazon off its perch? It remains to be seen.

The company has had its footprint in India for a long time but now plans to spread its wings further in the country but establishing a direct base here. CEO Eyal Waldman talks about the company’s capabili-ties, developments and plans as Mellanox makes inroads into the Indian market.

To increase penetration in India, Mellanox will be opening up a subsidiary and putting more resources on the ground. “Once we start seeing more traction, we might have a design center here for software support and development to help our customers in India to tune and customize some of the products for the Indian enterprises.” Mellanox also has plans for manufacturing in India for which it employs Flextronics’ services. Eyal elaborates, “We use Flex for manufacturing and they have plants here in India. We can open some production lines in India, once we see more revenue here. We use contract manufacturing and have tie-ups with USI in Taiwan, Sony in Japan and STMicro in France and Flex and USI China for board manufacturing.”

“We have capabilities in India and we might bring resources from Israel to help build the infrastructure in India, as we’ve done in Europe, Africa, US, Asia and China. You want to build the cloud, we make it very easy. Within a day we can completely build a cloud of 10 or even 100 servers.” In the HCI space, Mellanox has partners such as HP, Nutanix and IBM.

Future RoadmapEyal believes that Mellanox’s offering cater directly to the cost aspect of businesses through better utilization of the datacenter. Mellanox presently plans to bring 25, 50 and 100 gigabit capabilities this year followed by 200 gigabit in 2017-18 and continue to increase the capabilities of analyzing, provisions and making it more cost effective to manage and run data centers and clouds. “Right now we move the data, we will come with processing capabilities in 2017 and help more entities analyze the data going through the pipes that we have in the data center,” addsEyal

Hopeful of making it big in India, Eyal remarks, “We expect to sell more than 800Mn USD this year and India is a single digit out of that. Indian datacenter performance is lagging 2-3 years behind the global standards today but India has the potential to leapfrog the West and China.” He continues, “We have the ability to analyze and process much more data. We expect more customers as what we bring to the Indian Market is the ability to analyze and process much more data and data is growing very fast all over the world, it is the new gold. In India, with more than a billion in population, there is a lot of data to be processed. If you use Mellanox, you stay competitive, else you stay behind.”

Mellanox is a leader in terms of capabilities likesurveillance, cyber protection capabilities, financial services, fraud detection and electronic transactions. In the media and entertain-ment space where there are large files with very high resolution to render, process and manipulate;Mellanoxhas a strong presence in the US.

Importance of Faster Data ProcessingNew innovative technologies like AI and Cogni-tive computing and their deployments have made it mandatory to have extremely efficient process-ing and analyzing of data today.Eyal states, “AI is another example where we are seeing machine learning capabilities, for example, Baidu, how we help them with artificial intelligence and machine learning. Cars like Tesla too produce a lot of dataabout 20MB every minute. This data in order to be processed needs to go to the data center and in real time, manipulated, stored, retrieved and processed, and then it goes back to the car with answers or conclusion. As we see more people with autonomous driving, it will create more data and require more data in very real time.”

In other industries like smart cities and surveil-lance, there is a lot of video data. Eyal believes that a major amount of video produced by cameras in India isn’t processed, and less than 20% of the data is being utilized currently. We can improve this significantly because we move much more data. “Paypal, just for an example, is using us for fraud detection, and they can do over 4 billion data insertions in real time in order to analyze frauds. Without Mellanox, the amount of data being moved would be much less and so the fraud detection would be lower.” He adds, “In cyberse-

curity or terrorist threat detection, you need to intercept and analyze data, whether its video or audio in real time. We are helping agencies in the US, China and in other places of the world and using our Interconnect they can analyze videos, still pictures, and prevent things or analyze and find the culprits post attacks.”

Eyal believes that India has a lot of potential, “We are talking to multiple enterprises and e-commerce companies. We want to bring the technology that is embedded and utilized all over the world, to the Indian enterprises.What we do is we make datacenters more efficient, so that the ROI is higher from compute and storage platforms.”He adds on Indian enterprise cloud infrastructure, “Today, most of the data produced in India, resides abroad, mainly in the US. In Europe we have seen a transition where European companies are opening their own clouds to manage and take responsibility of the data, because data is the next big resource. It is the gold of the future. So building clouds in India and storage capabilities for the data to reside in India will be very important and empowering for India.” For Cloud, Mellanox has an appliance and a blueprint of a very efficient cloud infrastructure calledCloudX and Eyal believesthis cloud appli-ance can be brought to Indian enterprises.

Targeting the Indian MarketMellanox plans to commence operations before the end of the year with technology engagement capability in the country through local manage-ment. In terms of support, Mellanox is working with Wipro. Currently the company has Avnet as one of the channel partners in India, and two more distributors going to the lower markets. Mellanox products are sold across the country with more than 1000 plus installations. Eyal adds, “We will have a direct technology engagement within Mellanox and fulfillment mostly through
