Dr.Placid Rodriguez Memorial Lecture - 2011

Indian Institute of Metals,

Kalpakkam & Chennai Chapters

The third Placid Rodriguez Memorial Lecture of 2011 was conducted on 5th

October, the birth

anniversary day of Dr. Placid Rodriguez. It may be recalled that The Indian Institute of Metals had

graciously initiated the annual lecture series in memory of Dr. Placid Rodriguez, a distinguished

metallurgist of India and past President of The Indian Institute of Metals.

The Placid Rodriguez Memorial Lecture Series was inaugurated by Dr. Baldev Raj, former

President, the Indian Institute of Metals and the then Director of The Indira Gandhi Centre for

Atomic Research, Kalpakkam on 26th

November 2009 at IGCAR, Kalpakkam. Prof. Atul Chokshi

of The Indian Institute of Science delivered the first Dr. Placid Rodriguez Memorial Lecture on

“Strength and Creep in Nano-Crystals”. The second memorial lecture, was delivered by Prof.

Seeram Ramakrishna of National University of Singapore on “Nanofibers & Global Challenges”, on

25th

October, 2010 at the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai.

The third PRML-2011 lecture was delivered by Dr. S. Srikanth, Director, National Metallurgical

Laboratory, Jamshedpur on 5th October, 2011 at the SRI Convention Centre, Anupuram. The topic

was on Modelling the thermodynamics and kinetics of oxidation of multiphase multi-component

alloys. The memorial lecture was conducted under the auspices of the Kalpakkam and Chennai

Page 11: THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF METALS CHENNAI …mme.iitm.ac.in/sbakshi/SecretarysReport2011-2012.pdfPage 1 of 15 THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF METALS CHENNAI CHAPTER C/o Department of Metallurgical

chapters of the Indian Institute of Metals. The Memorial Lecture is sponsored The Indian Institute

of Metals, BRNS, and Defence Research & Development Organization.

Dr. P. R. Vasudeva Rao, Director, Chemistry Group of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research

Chairman, welcomed all the members. He recollected vividly the footprints left behind by Dr.

Placid Rodriguez and various facets of his contributions to the country. He also thanked Mrs.

Blossom Rodriguez for having kindly blessed the occasion by her presence, despite her travel

schedules. Dr. U. Kamachi Mudali, Member of PRML committee introduced the genesis of the

annual event, while Dr. Srinivasa Bakshi, Secretary of IIM, Chennai chapter introduced the speaker.

This was followed by the 3rd

Placid Rodriguez Memorial Lecture delivered by Dr. S. Srikanth,

Director, National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur. Dr. Srikanth has developed leadership in

many areas like extraction of metals from lean and complex ores, non-equilibrium phase

transformations, high temperature corrosion, failure analysis and solid oxide fuel cells, to name a

few. He is a recipient of many awards like CSIR Young Scientist award, Young Metallurgist award

and Metallurgist of the Year award by Ministry of Steel and Mines and MRSI Medal. He is a

Fellow of many professional societies and is on the editorial board of many international journals.

Dr. S. Srikanth delivered a lecture on modeling the thermodynamics and kinetics of oxidation of

multi-phase multi-component alloys. Dr. Srikanth had provided an excellent overview of modeling

of thermodynamics and kinetics of the oxidation process in multi-component, multi phase alloys

like nickel based superalloys, without the need for simplifying assumptions. He elucidated the role

of oxygen diffusion and the role of point defects in the oxidation process. He demonstrated that the

nature of oxide phases formed and their growth can be predicted using the commercially available

thermodynamic database and experimental parabolic rate constants documented in the literature.

Dr. T. Jayakumar, Director, Metallurgy and Materials Group presented the cash award of

Rs.20,000/- to Dr. S. Srikanth. Dr. P. Parameswaran, Vice-Chairman, The Indian Institute of

Metals, Kalpakkam Chapter released the CD and the book containing the manuscript and

presentation of PRML – 2011. The copies of the books and CDs were distributed to the audience.

The participants, around 150, constituted a wide spectrum of age group, from young trainees and

research scholars in the area of materials science to experienced scientists in the area of physical

metallurgy and thermodynamics. The participants were from the Chennai and Kalpakkam chapters

of IIM. The third lecture in the Dr. Placid Rodriguez Memorial lecture series, PRML-2011 was

concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. M. Vijayalakshmi, Convener of PRML committee.
