    SECTION-A (Comprehension)

Read the passage and answer the following questions.

Man is a social being. The children continue to live with their parents and in groups which are known as the ‘family’, ‘community’, ‘society’, and ‘nation’. The individuals as well as the groups depend on one another to a very large extent. This dependency and cooperation is possible only since they can interact and communicate with each other through speech. A young child learns to speak at home. It learns the meaning of words and, subsequently, the grammar of the language. Using this as a foundation, it acquires further knowledge from teachers and also skills of a specific trade.

At almost every stage there is an exchange of ideas between the child and other members of the society. It is this ability to communicate with its parents, teachers, and other children and grown-ups which makes a human being so different from other members of the animal kingdom. Our ancient sages acknowledged the importance of speech communication. In fact, Aristotle (384-322BC) had commented that one of the essential characteristics of a man as a social being is his power of reasoned speech.
