THE INDEX CELEBRATES AN ANNIVERSARY The Index newsletter that we all look forward to reading each month proudly pro-

claims ldquonine years of continuous monthly publicationrdquo but its roots go back much

further The Index was first published by Robert Mullikin in 1873 as Trappersquos first

ldquonewspaperrdquo It was published on the 15th of each month and the cost was 50 cents per

year payable in advance 100 copies of each issue were printed on a small hand print-

wwwunicornbookshopcom The copy is very fragile and not usually on display It is

Information about Trappersquos other early newspapers and early history is also available on the Unicorn Bookshop website

The Index was reborn on July 1993 as a project of former commissioner Holly Wieland That July edition shown on the

right requested suggestions for a name for the newsletter Everyone felt that The Index was appropriate so Trappersquos first newspaper

had its rebirth 120 years after it was first published For the next ten years The Index was published ldquoperiodicallyrdquo after Mrs Wie-

land left the council depending on who had time to do it

Since August 2003 The Index has been published continuously every month All known copies of The Index newsletter

plus the December 1873 ldquonewspaperrdquo issue are available on the Town website at wwwtrappemdnet (click ldquoNewsletterrdquo and scroll to
