Popular Music is something that is becoming increasingly difficult to define. It is now used as an umbrella term that encompasses many genres. Throughout history the term popular music has changed and also its application. However, as there is not an agreed upon definition, which should tell us what this music includes, not everyone will have the same perception of this music.Similarly, we cannot define what is and is not jazz as people’s cultural experiences and interpretations give rise to variations in the music thus making it their own.‘Pop’ musicians like Lianne La Havas are continually described as being “jazz, folk, pop, soul” (The Observer 2013). Various musicians explore how jazz has influenced some of the pop music we have today. Examples of this are very apparent in the foundation of Lianne’s music and she acknowledges jazz to be a key stem from which we derive popular music.Lianne draws influence from many artists from the United Stated notably Erykah Badu and Jill Scott. She has also been likened to Esperanza Spalding, Alicia Keys and Aretha Franklin.Exploring how jazz has ‘travelled’ and been exposed to popular musicians and identifying what aspects of it are incorporated in their music will be a key feature of my research.
