The 2019 Kickoff Dinner

The 2019 Kickoff Dinner … Continued

In case you missed it, 15

Canton Magicrafters and

their spouses met out at

John’s Bar and Grille for a

fun evening of magic, fel-

lowship and great food as

we kicked off 2019 on the

right foot. We even had

world class illusionist, Ja-

son Hootie there to do

some wonderful magic.

Our winner of the free reg-

istration to the 2019 battle

of magicians was our 2018

magician of the year, Brent

Schneider. Our MC for the

evening was our very own

President, Jeff Conley. Jim

Klayder started things off

with a lesson on how to do

the color changing silk, but

not too many people learned

the real secret. Brent

Schneider passed his silk

through a borrowed cell

phone and passed the cap

of the bottle into the bottle.

Mike Bishop did some math

magic and Drew

Hutchinson performed

ly was very glad to see so

much great magic per-

formed at the kickoff din-

ner. I was also glad to

see such a good turnout

for this event. A special

thanks to Jeff Conley for

donating the free registra-

tion to this years battle.

Ron Barnett performed

the trick that can’t be ex-

plained and Nick Popa

did some incredible card

magic as he found the

chosen card in the most

incredible way. Mike

Oddo performed some

card magic, the hard way

and our guest of honor,

Jason Hootie did some

wonderful magic with a

Rubic’s Cube. And finally

our MC, Jeff Conley, did

some magic with some

after Christmas sale

items and a very unusual

Easter bunny. I personal-

his cell phone and Drew Hutchinson

did some multiplying bottles and

turned some silks into candy for the

holiday season. Paul Snyder used

some Christmas magic to restore

some broken candy canes for Santa

Clause and Jeff Conley ended

things up with a very professional

. Before the magic be-

gan we had a small covered

dish dinner and a magic gift

exchange which was very en-

joyable for all. Our Santa, Jim

Klayder, dawned the beard and

passed out his own presents to

all the good magicians. Randy

Weidenhamer started things

off with correctly predicting the

card on either side of the cho-

sen card and Nick Popa per-

formed a torn and restored card

effect with 2 signed cards and the

final result was one card with 2

signatures. Kayden Steffle did a

masterful job with an oil and water

routine and Rick Everhard gave

a book review and sculptured a

balloon unicorn hat. Jim Klayder

they told him the exact location of

“Easy learning doesn’t build strong skills. The reality is that to be effective, learning needs to be effortful.” - Brene

Brown

This month we continue our new focus, THE CHALLENGE #2. Put your thinking caps on and look in the Abbott’s Magic Cata-

logue of Magic Volume #26 page 51. Read the description for Premonition Outdone and create a method. Good luck.

The CHALLENGE: Recreate it with any method you can. Share your method with THINK MAGIC and you can win!

Click on the link and watch Greg Bordner from Abbott’s perform the effect live.

https://www.abbottmagic.com/Premonition-Outdone-by-Stan-Lobenstern-ABBpremonitioutdn.htm?categoryId=-1

EFFECT: From the insert of Abbott’s Catalogue “A two-deck miracle! A spectator chooses either a red or a blue

backed deck. From the chosen deck one card is freely selected. This card is placed aside in full view. The other deck

is counted, one card at a time, face upwards. There are only fifty-one cards and the

Presents #2 The Challenge: Stan Lobenstern’s Premonition

Page 4: The Illusion - Canton Magicrafterscantonmagicrafters.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/... · 1/2/2019  · ACAAN routine All in all it was a great night for magic and holiday cheer

only missing card matches the first selection! This, in itself, would be satisfying conclusion to miraculous coinci-

dence - but there is more. Even though the spectator has just counted fifty-one cards, the magician states that the

deck is complete. The only way that statement could be true would be if the selected card from the blue deck (for

instance) had a back that matched the red backed deck. The selection is turned over and it does have a red back!

The only red backed card from a blue backed deck!

This is a mechanical and self-working trick. It works every time and the selected card can be different each time.

No rough and smooth principle. No wax. No sleights. No codes, threads, wires, mirrors or stage traps! Best of all -

no forcing! Premonition Outdone by Stan Lobenstern is done openly - the spectator handles the cards. Comes

complete with cards, routine and suggested patter. Perform Premonition Outdone and throw your audiences for a

loop!”

PARAPHINILIA: Two decks of cards.

HISTORY: Stan Lobenstern was a member of the Order of Merlin Shield (thirty-five years a continuous member).

He also was a member of Ring 170 (Orlando, Florida). He was well-known as the owner of the Rabbit in the Hat

Ranch magic store, selling his magic wares usually lower than other sources. He seemed to be of another era, with

his quick wit, subtle humor, and flamboyant character. He was the creator of Tarot Fantasy, “Impromptu” Headline

Prediction in Apocalypse Vol. 4, No. 9 1981 and Your Face Trick (A neat effect where the Performer displays three

cards, two blank face cards, and one regular picture card. Cards are mixed, and the picture card is placed on the

hand of the spectator. When the card is turned over the face has vanished and has be replaced by the magician’s

face on the card. Maybe the next THINK MAGIC CHALLENGE).

After you create your method, you may want to search out others that are Based on Stan’s work, like Two Deck

Coincidence put out by Repro Magic in the seventies, Bill McCaffrey's Prize Winner. Additional thoughts/

variations on the effect "Premonition, A Prize Winner" by J. G. Thompson Jr. can be found in Bob Nelson's "Still

More Miracles in Mentalism".

The CHALLENGE: How did he do it? Enjoy the journey! Share your method with THINK MAGIC and you can win!

Email your Solution to [email protected] . Or send a video and I will write it up for you.

The Canton Magicrafters were organized on April 17,

1920 (before IBM) by a group of 20 magicians from Can-

ton Ohio to further the art of magic and the allied arts in

Canton Ohio and the surrounding areas. The club dis-

banded and was later reformed in 1960. The first new

meeting hosted 10 magicians. The Canton Magicrafters,

as we are called now, quickly grew to 26 members and

became a chartered I.B.M. Ring, # 243, on April 15,

1977. We now boast a membership of more than 30 ma-

gicians of all ages, styles, abilities, and skill levels from

all over Stark County and beyond. Monthly meeting, ban-

quets and shows, auctions, picnics, club library, road

trips, lectures, and much more are just a few of the

things the Canton Magicrafters have to offer their mem-

bers. The Canton Magicrafters have a proud history of

serving the magic community in Stark County for many

years, and we hope to continue for many more.
