Why?

• 2/3 the planet covered by water• We know more about the surface of the moon than

the surface of the earth• 60% of the world’s biomass is under the oceans

Objectives of the contest

• Increase the awareness and visibility of marine technical fields, educational and career opportunities, and potential employers.

• Help students develop the skills necessary to enter careers in technical fields. These skills include the ability to problem solve, think critically, troubleshoot, communicate effectively, and manage projects

Objectives of the contest

• To enhance the awareness of teachers and students to marine conservation and the oceans’ effects on our planet and our lives.

• To provide a platform for design and technology students to partake in a practical design exercise with observable objectives.

• Increase students’ understanding of the role that ROVs play in modern ocean engineering and environmental applications.

2012 contestSurveying and removing hazardous waste from

a WWII shipwreck

Task #1 Survey the shipwreck site

• Measuring the length of the wreck.

• Determining the orientation of the ship on the seafloor.

• Creating a map of the wreck site.

• Determining if debris piles are metal or non-metal.

• Scanning the shipwreck

Task #2: Removing fuel oil from the shipwreck

This mission task involves: • Transporting and attaching a lift bag to a fallen mast.

• Inflating the lift bag to remove the fallen mast from the worksite.

• Removing endangered encrusting coral from the ship’s hull. (2 numbers max)

• Transplanting the coral to the grid (unoccupied square)

• Using two simulated sensors, determine if fuel oil remains inside the fuel tank. • Can combine into 1 sensor• 12cm long & 2cm in dia. (or 2cmx2cm square) • Calibrate it first.• Then place it on the black PVC section.

• Removing a sample of fuel oil from within the tank by drilling a hole into the hull. Returning the sample to the surface.

• Resealing the hole with the magnetic plug.
