The DanRan 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run is a race formed in memory of a beloved community member, Danny Ward. Dan was an avid runner and sports enthusiast who served the Burnt Hills community as a
bartender of Carney’s Restaurant for over twenty years. The DanRan 5K and Community Day celebration raise funds for the Daniel Ward Memorial Fund, which provides annual scholarships for graduating seniors pursuing a
degree in the hospitality trade. To date, eight $1,000 scholarships have been awarded deserving seniors. This year’s DanRan 5K and Community Day will be held on August 10th. The race begins at 9:00 a.m. and the
Community Day celebration at 4pm, which includes live bands, games for kids ages 6-60+, great food and many friends. Racers can sign up on the Albany Running Exchange web site or by mail. Find us on Facebook too and
spread the cheer. As Danny would say, participating in these events is “an excellent choice!”

Thanks to the support of our Chamber members and the Southern
Saratoga County community, the Southern Saratoga County Chamber
Angels program will provide for local families in financial distress for a
24th consecutive year.
In 2013, this program will provide holiday cheer for approximately
700 children. The families of these children, infant to 18 years old,
are enduring financial hardships that make the extra expense of the
holidays a cause for stress and unhappiness in what should be a
season of joy.
In collaboration with the Southern Saratoga YMCA, The Mechanicville
Area Community Services Center and CAPTAIN Youth and Family
Services, the children are identified through school districts and
county agencies that then pass on the children ages and wish-lists to
the Southern Saratoga County Chamber Angels.
The Chamber Angels are entrusted to find sponsors or shop for each
child, if necessary to make sure every child identified has their
holiday gift wishes fulfilled.
We appreciate your consideration of the following opportunities to support the 2013 Chamber
Angels program:
Yes! ____ We will sponsor __ number of children
The gift list per child ranges from $80.00 - $150.00 depending on age and retail store. Each
sponsor will be provided with a name, gender, age, clothing size and interests to guide sponsor in
shopping for each child.
____ Monetary Donation to contribute toward the Gift List(s) fulfillment
____ Volunteer Your Time to help the 2013 Chamber Angels Program
Opportunities include contacting businesses & the local community for sponsorship of children,
soliciting support for annual fundraising, and representing the Chamber Angels during Chamber
events & programs
The families of Southern Saratoga County in financial distress this year truly appreciate your
participation in this program.

We all know that pursuing a collegeeducation is an expensive venture and itisn’t getting any cheaper. But that doesn’tmean you can’t employ some very basicstrategies to help your child claim even asmall piece of the $50 billion scholarshippie that is divided every year.
Even if your child is only a sopho-more or junior in high school, startresearching scholarship opportunitiesnow. High school guidance offices arealways a great source of information. Many community organizations like theRotary, Lions and Kiwanis Clubs,Athletics Boosters and Knights ofColumbus Councils offer annual awards.Even employers may offer scholarships tothe children of employees so be sure to
inquire at your human resources office.Keep a list of scholarships, deadlines andeligibility criteria so you don’t miss out onpotentially thousands of dollars in freemoney.
Another great resource is FastWeb—the premier web-based scholarship searchengine. Have your child visit their websiteat www.fastweb.com and complete aprofile. List as many interests and poten-tial career choices as possible and youwill start receiving periodic e-mail updateswith scholarship opportunities for whichyour child might qualify. Begin scouringcollege websites for institutional scholar-ship offerings and do not limit your searchto academics or athletics.
Your child may qualify for anynumber of scholarships based on specialskills like art, music or journalism. Do notbe afraid to show some initiative and calladmissions offices for help. And finally,do not pay for help with scholarshipsearches. The best resources available toyou and your child are free so be waryof scams!_________Patrick S.
