And I tell you that you are

Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and

the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind

on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you

loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

Matt.

THE LOCAL CHURCH AND THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH

• The scripture make a distinction between the local church and the universal church.

• All people who believe in Jesus for salvation are a part of the universal church. But unless they join themselves to a local body of believers (local church), it is difficult to conceive / comprehend what membership in the Universal church means.

Page 14: THE IDEAL CHURCH - Webs

THE LOCAL CHURCH AND THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH

• The scripture make a distinction between the local church and the universal church.

• Example of local church:

• - Paul wrote to local church in Galatia- who had specific leaders (Romans 16:1,5)

• - Jesus too addressed local assemblies, pointing out their specific needs as a body. (Re 2,3)

THE LOCAL CHURCH AND THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH

• The scripture make a distinction between the local church and the universal church.

• Only then can they truly understand what it is to be true members of the Universal church made up of people from every tribe, tongue and nation. (Re 5:10)

HOW SHOULD WE EVALUATE BEING INFLUENCED AND INFLUENCING OTHERS?

2 Kings 15:1-4

[Uzziah] did what was pleasing in the LORD’s sight, just as his father, Amaziah, had done. But he did not destroy the pagan shrines, where the people offered sacrifices and burned incense.

OUR INFLUENCE ON OTHERS WILL BE JUDGED BY GOD.

• Zechariah was an evil king because he

encouraged Israel to sin by worshiping idols.

• Sin in our life is serious. But it is even more serious to encourage others to disobey God.

• We are responsible for the way we influence others.

• Beware of double sins: ones that not only hurt us, but also hurt others by encouraging them to sin.

Romans 1:32

– They are fully aware of God’s death penalty for those who do these things, yet they go right ahead and do them anyway. And, worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too. (Romans 1:32)

JOSHUA’S GROWING INFLUENCE

1. Joshua’s influence grew because of his relationship with Moses. (Deut. 31:1-8)

– Through Moses’ mentorship, Joshua not only polish his skills, but the people accepted him as their leader

– Deut. 31:7

Page 23: THE IDEAL CHURCH - Webs

2. Joshua's influence grew because he possessed

patience and integrity. (Josh. 1:5-9) – Joshua continued to grow patiently even after the

people rejected his words in Num. 14. – While neither he nor Caleb died in the wilderness, as

did all those who rebelled against God, nevertheless they were both force to wander in the desert for 40 years through no fault of their own.

– Such an unfair turn of events could have turned Joshua into an angry, melancholy, disgruntled man.

– Yet he became none of those things. – Throughout the long wilderness journey, he continued

to display great consistency and credibility – until at last the people were ready to follow.

JOSHUA’S GROWING INFLUENCE

Page 24: THE IDEAL CHURCH - Webs

3. Joshua’s influence grew because he was right. (Josh. 23:1-11) – From the beginning, Joshua tried to do the right

thing.

– He attempted to led the people in the right direction.

– After the exodus from Egypt, most of Israel considered his words unwise and rash-yet Joshua’s words stood the test of time.

– His message never changed, and eventually everyone saw that he was right.

– Joshua demonstrated the influence that comes down from character and conviction
