Along them, one can admire uniquely designed buildings, relax in beautiful courtyards, and enjoy the mingling scent of fragrant flowers. The passageways of Beijing are unlike those of any other metropolis around the world, distinguishing Beijing from other capital cities. The word hutong originates from the Mongolian language, pronounced ‘hot- tog’, its literal translation is ‘well.’ In ancient times, people gathered and live around wells, implying that the original meaning of hutong should be ‘a place where people gather together and live.’ In old Beijing, a courtyard home usually accommodated one single household. pound of four villas in different European styles. The compound has an illustrious history. Originally owned by British businessman Mr. Morris, the 1920’s boss of the dog-racing course, is has also been home to the East China Bureau of the Communist Party, the office of the first Mayor of Shanghai Mr. Chen Yi and, since 1956, the Rui Jin Guest House (10). Originally a government hotel, many Party Leaders including Zhou Enlai and foreign government officials including the Indian Prime Minis-ter stayed at the hotel before it was opened to the public in 1979.

Face Bar (located on the compound), is the ideal place to stop for a rest and a pre-dinner drink on a balmy evening. Enjoy the Chinoiserie interior or lounge on the manicured lawn outside; either way, Face Bar is a little piece of Shanghai’s old colonialesque splendour. If you don’t get lulled into staying for dinner at the Thai restaurant upstairs or In-dian restaurant at the back, take the compound’s back exit onto Fuxing Lu and head for FuMao (11). named after its location on the corner of Fuxing Lu, Maoming Lu). With formica tables and chairs, this is cer-tainly not five-star dining, but it is widely acclaimed as the best place in Shanghai to eat Xiaolongxia (river crabs). The best season is from May to July; bring a bottle of wine and some bread to dip in the deli-cious sauce and make sure your clothes are well covered by the plastic bibs provided.

If you aren’t weighed down by too much shopping, walk around the corner onto Maoming Nan Lu after dinner, to listen to some live jazz by Blues & Jazz after 9pm. Owner Mr. Fu is a keen Germanophile.

City Tour - Shanghai Shanghai - City Tour

In this issue’s city tour, we explore the area around Xintiandi, which boasts many treasures of old Shanghai in terms of architecture and his-tory. It also offers an insight into daily life both past and present.

Covering two large city blocks of rebuilt shikumen, traditional stone gate houses, Xintiandi (1) has become a showcase symbol of modern Shanghai. Filled with souvenir shops and some of Shanghai’s most noted restaurants and designer bars, most of Shanghai’s expat com-munity has been here at least once. Even if you have visited before, do take a few minutes to wander through the passages to get an idea of the original splendour of the old shikumen later on in the tour.

Exit onto Huangpi Nan Lu and look for No. 374, the entrance to the Site of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (2). This site is of key importance to the city, as it is a lasting testimo-ny to Shanghai being the nursery of Chinese Communism. It was here that the Chinese Communist Party was formed on 23rd July 1921, in a room belonging to one of the delegates, Li Hanjun. Mao Zedong was also present that day, and was one of only two of the original 13 who went on to serve in the first Chinese Communist government, formed in 1949. The modern museum occupies the whole building and documents the formative years of the CCP, incorporating a life-size wax setting of the first meeting with Mao centre stage (open 9am–5pm).

Walk down Taicong Lu, onto Chong De Lu via Pu’an Lu, to meander the full length of Dongtai Lu Antique Market (3). Mao paraphernalia and antiques old and new make this a fun place to shop, where the French Concession meets the Old Town. While most of the stalls are dedicated to touristic souvenirs, unexpected gems from old Shanghai can be unearthed by the diligent scavenger. From old sewing kits to unpaid bills bearing the insignia of colonialist companies like the Compagnie Francaise de Tramways et d’Eclairage Electrique de Shanghai (Tramways and Electric Lighting Company of Shanghai), evidence of Shanghai’s colonial past can still be unearthed. Look for items that have both tra-ditional Chinese characters and English or French on them. In 1949 the characters were changed to simplified ones, and items made post 1949 are unlikely to bear English insignia.

Don’t get side-tracked by the bustle, or you will miss the 1920’s French colonial architecture that lines the streets in remarkably

unspoilt conditions. Many of the buildings feature the mark of the ar-chitect and sometimes even the date of completion under their eaves. Make sure to walk the entire length of the market and, time permitting, wander through the labyrinth of alleyways that unfold through the shikumen. The prize is to find one of the lanes leading to a larger villa, which often have gardens and trees and where the noise of traffic is lost to the krkrkrk of the cicadas.

Emerge onto Tibet Road (Xizang Lu) and cross the street to enter the market on the opposite side of the road. Generally referred to as the ‘Bird and Flower Market’ (4), the animals sold there actually vary depend-ing on the season. During the winter, fish and turtles of all colours and sizes swim in basins, while people browse by. In spring and summer, the halls are filled with chirping birds – from chicken to parrots. From late summer into the autumn, men shuffle between packed stalls and teetering jars inspecting the crickets they house.

Mainly bought for their calming song, fighting crickets are also avail-able – at a considerable cost. Medium sized song crickets cost around RMB 3, compared to a highly ranked fighting cricket, which can fetch as much as RMB 10,000! Take your time to wander around the stalls and look at the many things on offer, as well as at the other shoppers.

Emerging back into the light, cross the road in the direction of the antiques market and head down Zizhong Lu, past the new Taipingqiao Park and lake, created by the developers of Xintiandi. Make sure to look behind you, to spot the Shanghai World Financial Centre already dwarf-ing the Jin Mao tower.

Continue down Zizhong Lu and cross through Fuxing Park (5), a wel-come relief from the traffic. Currently being renovated in preparation for Expo 2010, the Park still acts as the local community centre. Stroll past the statue of Engel and Marx and take a break on one of the many benches to watch people going about their daily life: doing gymnas-tics, singing, dancing, playing cards or musical instruments, and the favourite Chinese pastime − watching the world go by.

Exit the park on the other side, onto Gaolan Lu. No. 18, a few hundred metres down on the right hand side, is St. Nicholas Military Church. Urban legend has it that the Russian Orthodox Church (6) was spared

from demolition during the Cultural Revolution by locals, who hung a big portrait of Mao from its dome.

Head back down Sinan Lu to visit the former residencies of revolution-ary leaders Dr. Sun Yat Sen (7. corner Sinan Lu, Fuxing Lu, open 9am– 4.30pm) and Zhou Enlai (8). Sun Yat Sen is famous for founding the first republic in 1911, ousting Pu Yi as the last Emperor. Zhou Enlai gained fame for putting forward China’s three cardinal policies (alliance with Soviet Russia, co-operation with the Communists and assistance to the workers’ and peasants’ movements), among other things. Dr. Sun’s two-storey European-style former residence was listed as one of the Key State-preserved Cultural Relic Units in 1961. The interior of the house and the content displayed is largely untouched, enabling visitors to recreate the life of the owners.

Just before reaching the end of Sinan Lu, turn right onto Central Jian-guo Lu and admire the old villas lining the small street. One of the most famous structures is the Dauphine (9), one of the landmarks of Leonard & Vesseyre, the architectural company that built most of the Art Deco buildings in the French Concession. Previously used by the military, it is now under renovation, its balconies, façade tiling and windows having been kept intact.

Continue on until you hit Ruijin No. 2 Road. Here, turn back on yourself to the right until you reach No. 18 on the left-hand side of the road. Enter the grounds of what used to be Morris Mansion − a colonial com-

China’s Growing Beer ConsumptionWhile German per capita beer consumption has been sliding over past decades, Chinese beer culture has exploded along with rising incomes and a higher quality of life. Surpassing the total beer consumption of the US in 2003, China is now the world’s largest beer market and shows promising growth potential. From 2000 to 2006, total beer consumption in China grew by 34% to 30bn litres, however per capita beer consumption currently lies at only 23 litres per per-son. This leaves considerable room for growth, to catch up to South Korean and Japanese levels of 39 and 51 litre per person respectively.

Despite being a huge growth market, competing on China’s beer market is no easy task, even for large international breweries. The primary obstacle remains a fragmented distribution network. Many brands, including imported boutique beers, are breaking into China’s major cities, but distribution in second and third tier cities requires organising everything from trucks to tricycles to reach the myriad of convenience stores across the country. In an attempt to overcome

this challenge, many of the larger international brands have bought local breweries, which come with estab-lished local distribution networks.

A booming nightlife culture among China’s urban elite has proved an ideal opportunity for boutique breweries to expand onto the Chinese market. However, a con-stant influx of innovative imports has spoiled Chinese trendsetters with choice, resulting in fads exploding

onto the market one day, only to be swept under the current by the ‘latest and greatest’ the next. On the opposite end of the spectrum, provincial low and middle income Chinese consumers are still highly price sensitive. The difference of a few RMB between a domestic and imported beer can make or break a new product’s chance of success. Finally, while Chinese consumers demonstrate openness to new prod-ucts, they still remain loyal to local brands over the long-term.
