Male Reproductive System
1. Scrotum – sac of skin that holds testes. Hangs below body to keep testes cool.
2. Testes – Where sperm and the male hormone testosterone is made.
Male Reproductive System 3. Epididymis – Place where sperm matures and
is stored.
4. Vas deferens – tube where sperm travels and winds up in the urethra.
5. Cowper’s gland – produces fluids to nourish sperm
Combination of sperm and fluids - semen
Male Reproductive System 6. Rectum – holds wastes
7. Seminal vesicles – adds secretions to semen.
8. Urinary bladder – stores urine
9. Prostate gland – contributes fluid to semen.
10. Urethra – tube for excretion of urine and sperm.
Male Reproductive System
11. Penis – external organ where semen and urine passes.
Ejaculation – muscular contractions force semen through urethra.
Female Reproductive System ovary
uterus
rectum cervix vagina
urethra
Urinary bladder
oviduct
Female Reproductive System
1. Ovary – organ that produces eggs and the female hormone estrogen.
Also responsible for menstrual cycle.
2. Oviduct – The tube which the egg passes through from the ovary.
3. Uterus – Organ where the fertilized egg finishes its development (womb).
Female Reproductive System 4. Urinary bladder – storage of urine.
5. Urethra – passage of urine to outside of body
6. Vagina – serves as entry of semen, as birth canal and exit for menstrual fluid.
7. Cervix – narrow opening of uterus
Female Reproductive System 8. Rectum – passage for wastes
Female Eggs 1. All the eggs are present at birth (approximately
2 million).
2. During the woman’s lifetime 500 eggs mature
3. Egg can be fertilized for about 12 - 24 hours after ovulation.
Fun fact: Pregnancy begin when the zygote attaches itself to the uterus and NOT when egg is fertilized.
Ovulation to Implantation
1. Ovary – produces estrogen & progesterone – meiosis occurs & egg develops
2. Egg matures in follicle of ovary 3. Ovulation – egg released from follicle –
may live for 24 hours

The Menstrual Cycle
A Cycle during which a developed egg is released from the ovary and the uterus is prepared to receive a fertilized egg.
------------------------------------------------------ Menstruation: Loss of egg and uterine tissue
via vagina if fertilization does not occur
Menopause: The time when a woman stops menstruating, usually between 45 & 55 and is no longer able to conceive.
