This institution is an equal opportunity provider, and employer.

by Carmen Rideout, Executive Director

I love these words! They are optimistic and the

possibilities that result when people engage in

these activities are endless. These three words

represent the theme for this year’s Older Americans

Month which we and the rest of the nation celebrates in

May of every year.

The Administration on Aging, part of the Administration for

Community Living, selects the theme each year. They selected this

2019 theme because connect, create, and contribute:

“Encourages older adults and their communities to:

Connect with friends, family, and services that support participation.

Create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health,

and personal enrichment. Contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others.

Communities that encourage the contributions of older adults are

stronger! By engaging and supporting all community members, we

recognize that older adults play a key role”.

Doesn’t this sound like Sheridan, our community? And isn’t this

what our talented and dedicated employees and generous

volunteers do every day? Most importantly the people that come to

the Hub on Smith and the people we serve throughout the

communities of Sheridan County are connecting, creating and

contributing everyday too. This is what we do!

You will find many ways you too can connect, create and contribute

in this edition of our quarterly newsletter. If you would like more

information on how you can get involved stop down at 211 Smith

Street, call us at 307-672-2240, visit our web page at

www.thehubsheridan.org and like us on Facebook!

Sponsorship opportunities for the 2019 Keystone Awards are now available and have traditionally been a key factor in the annual event’s success. “The Senior Citizen’s Council’s Board of Directors appreciates the broad support this extraordinary event has received from our community. The participation of our VIP partners definitely elevates the event and creates an extraordinary sense of community that happens when we all come together to celebrate such a special group of people!” said Carmen Rideout, Executive Director of The Hub on Smith. “The array of programs designed to serve community members in their homes and at The Hub far exceeds many senior centers and public transportation programs throughout the region,” continued Rideout, “in fact, many of our services are offered 365 days a year. We couldn’t do what we do without the support we have in this amazing community of ours – it really is an exceptional place to live!” For Sponsorship opportunities, please contact Skye Heeren or Robyn Murray at 307.672.2240. Tickets for the April 18, 2019 event will be available for purchase beginning February 15

The Hub on Smith – Sheridan’s Senior Center, is pleased to announce this year’s distinguished honorees for the 2019 Keystone Awards. The annual award, first established in 2010 as the Senior Citizen Council’s primary fundraiser, recognizes three outstanding community members annually, who have exhibited strength of character and a lifetime of service to the Sheridan community. First conceived by Rindy West, Carmen Rideout, Hub Executive Director, and a team of community volunteers, the prestigious award is modeled after the Kennedy Center Honors and features a gala reception and program at Sheridan’s WYO Theater featuring special tributes and entertainment showcasing these very important community members. As in year’s past, this year’s honorees have each played significant roles in the community and impacted many organizations and lives with their selflessness and service to others as well as dedication to making Sheridan an outstanding community for all its residents.

by Terri Hayden, Volunteer Director

The Hub on Smith considers our volunteers as the mortar between the building blocks of our programs and services. Over 350 volunteers play an essential role in helping us

to achieve our mission- “to celebrate, embrace and serve older adults for the betterment of our community”. In 1974, National Volunteer Appreciation Week was formalized and

continues as a celebration honoring volunteers and the service they provide. This year National Volunteer Appreciation week is April 7-13, 2019. During this week (and the week prior) we will have designated certain days to celebrate our many volunteer groups: Celebrations will be in the Café (Dining Room) unless otherwise listed. Wednesday, April 3- Our Heritage Towers Volunteers will be celebrated at the Towers Thursday, April 4- Our Big Horn Meal Site Volunteers! In Big Horn Monday, April 8- Green Boomerang, Development, and Office Support Volunteers Tuesday, April 9- Story Meal Site Volunteers! In beautiful Story Wednesday, April 10- Our Café, Desk, and Registrars Thursday, April 11- Dementia Friendly Wyoming, Family Care Giver, Loan Closet, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Tongue River Volunteers to be announced! The Hub has some exciting news to share! In partnership with The Dog and Cat Shelter we will now be offering a

new program, the Senior Dog Program! The goal is to coordinate senior dog adoptions with The Hub’s goal of

keeping seniors living independently. The first year objective is to successfully adopt 12 Senior Dogs to 12 Senior

Households.

Funding for the program includes adoption fees, wages for the Senior Outreach Coordinator, etc. The Dog and Cat

Shelter will provide the food for the dog. The target dog age for the project is 7 and older but dogs that require a

quiet environment could also be considered. Keep on the lookout for more information to come in the following

months.
