The House System
Braehead Primary School
Working together to create a happy learning environment
Rationale
Allocation of Houses
The school is divided into three houses: Clyde, Leven and Lomond.
Children shall be allocated a house when they start P1 or when they join
the school at a later stage. Where possible children of the same family
will be allocated the same house whilst ensuring that the number of
children is fairly balanced between each house. Every child will be given a
coloured badge that represents its house. If lost they can be bought for
20p from the office.
Captains and Vice Captains
At the beginning of the new session P6s and P7s will be given the
opportunity to nominate themselves as Captains (P7) or Vice-captains (P6).
The SMT team will then interview children who have nominated
themselves. The SMT team will decide on the final Captains and Vice-
captains after consultation with class teachers. The Captains and Vice-
captains will wear a badge to show their position in the school. Captains
and Vice-captains will be expected to:
• Bring their House into assembly quietly and sensibly
• Sit at the front of their house at assembly and encourage good
behaviour from their House
• Be a example of exemplary behaviour and attitude
• Help in the dinner hall on Fridays
• Collect and count up the house points
• Be responsible for the playground toys
• Help to organise food and drink on reward days
• Organise House competitions
• Be a buddy to younger children in their House
• Propose and represent ideas form their House ideas that will
improve the House System
Captains or Vice-Captains whose behaviour or attitude is not a good
example to others will be asked to stand down from the captaincy or vice-
captaincy.

Awarding House Points
Any member of staff can award House Points to any child, at any time and
for any reason if they are “caught being good” or meeting the set weekly
target. A sticker should be given to the child to show they have gained a
house point. Any type of sticker may be used and is worth one house
point. Children can display their sticker on their clothes but P3-7s should
later record their stickers by putting them into their diaries.
Each week there will be a school target discussed at assembly and staff
members should specifically award house points if children are seen to be
trying to meet this target.
Children and Houses will also be awarded House points at assembly for
good behaviour and/or participation. Star Achievers will automatically
receive a House point for their house as well as children who volunteer to
speak for “The Spotlight” or “Wall of Fame” at assembly.
House Points will also be given out for participating in or winning House
Competitions.
Recording House Points
Children in p3-7 should record their House points in their diary by
sticking in their awarded stickers. They should total their stickers at
the end of each week and record this in their diaries for their parents or
guardians to see. The points for each house should also be clearly
displayed on the classroom wall so that the Captains and Vice-captains can
collect them. It is not necessary to display the individual house points.
Rewarding Winning Houses
The House Captains and Vice-captains will collect the House points from
each class during lunchtime on Friday. They will total them and hand
them into the SMT before assembly. There will be weekly, interim,
termly awards as well as an annual award.
Weekly Award: At the end of each assembly the weekly winners will be
announced. Their award will be to have their lunch first on a Friday (the
next Friday after assembly).

Interim Awards: These will be given when the House reaches the
following amount of points during a term:
• More than 200 points – 15 minutes extra playtime on the first dry
playtime of the next week
• More than 500 points – all the children will receive a pencil in their
House colour
• More than 1000 points – non uniform day for on the next Friday
Termly Awards: The House who has earned the most points over a term
will be given the choice from the following rewards. The Captains and
Vice-captains will choose the award. The choice of different awards
given to the children will be dependent upon staffing availability, weather
and financial constraints.
1. Watch a DVD on the big screen in the hall with choc ices and ice
lollies
2. Have a crafts and computers afternoon with biscuits and juice
3. Afternoon of outdoor play with biscuits and juice
4. Gym games afternoon
Annual Award: The House who has earned the most points over the year
shall spend an afternoon at the Meadow Centre. The children in p1-4 will
be provided with a variety of activities in the Sports Hall e.g. bouncy
castle, trampoline, soft play, ball games etc. p5 -7 can choose to swim
and/or play in the Sports Hall.
When the Houses are being given their rewards it is important that
the children who are not involved are participating in normal classroom
activities and not anything that could be interpreted as “a treat”
Consultation with Pupils
Every year the Pupil Council will be given the opportunity to review the
rewards and propose new rewards.

Meeting Behaviour and Attitude Standards
The expectation is that children will be loyal to their House and try their
best to earn points for their House by displaying good behaviour and
attitudes. If children are consistently getting demerits and are
consequently not contributing points to their House then they will be
temporarily removed from their House. An individual behaviour plan will
be drawn up after consultation with the SMT, class teacher, parent or
guardian and the pupil, Targets will be set for the pupil to meet so that
they can rejoin their house in the future once their behaviour and
attitudes have improved. Whilst the pupil is not in the House System
they may not participate in any of the weekly, interim, termly or annual
rewards for their House.
