In 1914, Wood-row Wilson was the president of the United States,

popular music was ragtime, jazz, and the blues, and we drove around in a “Tin Lizzie,” a Ford Model T tour-ing car. 1914 was an exciting year in many regards, but it would come to be a monu-mental year for the San Antonio Zoo. That year, Colonel George W. Brackenridge deeded a scenic plot of land to the City of San Antonio for the public viewing of elk, buffalo, deer, sev-eral monkeys, two lions, and four bears. Thanks to the visionaries of that era, that small plot of land has grown to 56 acres and is home to over 9,000 animals of 750 species. They did well to preserve all that nature and the good will of Colonel Brackenridge had to offer. 100 YEARS OF TRANSFORMATION The San Antonio Zoo has experienced many exciting groundbreaking opportunities in its’ first 100 years. Just after the San Antonio Zoological Society was formed in 1928, the introduction of revolutionary cageless exhibits and rare animals quickly transformed the San Antonio Zoo into one of the leading zoos in the nation; a posi-tion it proudly maintains to this day. The zoo is a place where families come to relax and enjoy themselves, where memories are made, and where imaginations run wild. Where else can you see the world’s largest reptiles, hear the haunting calls of gibbons swinging high in the sky, watch an okapi pluck leaves with its foot-long tongue, or meet a hippo face to face? OVER A HALF A CENTURY From its work with whooping cranes that began in the 1950s, to a partnership with Texas Parks & Wildlife

I in supporting the endangered Attwa-ter’s prairie chick-en in the 1990s, the zoo has an estab-lished history of Texas conservation.Overall, the zoo participates in over 230 endangered species programs and plays a major role in breeding en-dangered animals worldwide.GREATACCOMPLISHMENTS Today, new exhibits are just as groundbreaking as those unveiled in the 1920s. Con-sider the under-water viewing and immersive experi-

ence of Africa Live! Phase I, the lush vegetation and sky-high aviary of Africa Live! Phase II, or the spacious and natural habitat of Gibbon Forest. This year the Zoo launches Zootennial Plaza, which includes a one-of-a-kind, 50-foot carousel that displays meticulously hand-painted animal figurines, such as a whooping crane, horned lizard, and even a Texas Jackelope. The plaza also boasts a beautiful, state-of-the-art restaurant, com-plete with an Executive Chef, a first for the San Antonio Zoo, and an elegant VIP room.WILD SINCE 1914 One hundred years later and looking into the future, the San Antonio Zoo provides the highest standard of care for its animal and plant collection, a diverse edu-cational and high quality recreational experience, and all the resources at its disposal for conservation of the Earth’s flora and fauna. For more information, visit the San Antonio Zoo online at www.sazoo.org

fascinating trip awaits guests of NATURAL BRIDGE CAVERNS, the

largest show cave in Texas. What makes the Discovery Tour so awe-inspiring? The caverns, located in the Texas Hill Country and minutes from San Antonio, contain cave formations that are centuries in the making and still growing today. In March of 1960, four college students from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio obtained permission to explore the area. Lured by an amazing 60-foot limestone bridge and a large sinkhole, the explorers made numer-ous attempts to find the large underground passages they theorized were there. On their fourth expedition, Orion Knox Jr. felt a cool draft from a rubble-filled crawlway. Such air currents often indi-cate the presence of addition-al rooms or passages. Upon clearing this 60-foot crawlway, the explorers made their way through two miles of vast cavern passage before returning to the sur-face to tell the landowners of their amazing discovery. The discoverers knew immediately what an astonishing find they had made and the land owners decided to develop the first ½ mile, the most spectacular part of the caverns, for the enjoyment of guests from around the world. Natural Bridge Caverns’ Discovery Tour was devel-oped with two main goals in mind: preservation of the cavern system and comfort of its guests. The result is one of the world’s premier show caverns. The Discovery was opened to the public on July 3, 1964 and dedicated by Texas Governor John B. Con-nelly as a “Jewel in the crown of Texas’ attractions.” Natural Bridge Caverns has also been designated a State Historical Site and a Registered National Natural Landmark.

A

Guided Tours Your guided tour, which takes approximately 75 minutes, will take you through vast underground rooms. Discover Sherwood Forest, the Castle of the White Gi-ants and the Hall of the Mountain King, a room the size of a football field. Amazing delicate crystalline formations and gigan-tic stone monuments fill these beautiful underground chambers. Since Natural Bridge Caverns opened to the public, hundreds of thousands of guests from all over the world have enjoyed the Discovery Tour. You are invited to see this spectacular natural wonder, too. For more information, visit Natural Bridge Caverns online at www.naturalbridgecaverns.com.

ore and more families are moving over the traditional dreaded fam-

ily holiday trips and opting for a special adventure of their own. Just mom, dad and the kids, exploring new territory, adding another scratch to their suitcases. When I think of the ideal family getaway a few elements come to mind; budget, convenience and overall experi-ence. The good news is, I found it all in Fort Worth, Texas, and I didn’t even have a layover! In fact, Fort Worth, Texas may be the most cost effective family destination in America!

Budget - let’s be honest, Santa is expensive. Traveling on a dime before the fa, la, la is a wise move when Christmas is approaching. Check out these budget friendly picks for a weekend in Fort Worth.Spirit air offers insanely cheap airfare into Fort Worth. Travel light and you can go without even paying for luggage! The Omni Hotel in Downtown Fort Worth has all the class of a luxury hotel without all the luxurious prices. A great central location in the heart of Downtown Fort Worth. Here you’re within walking distance from dining, shopping, and local attractions like the Water Gardens and Sundance Square Plaza.

Convenience There’s underestimated value in stress-free traveling. Make the best of a short vacation with as little hang-ups as possible. Fort Worth is great for convenience. Ev-erything is within minutes of the city center. Downtown, dining and shops are within walking distance from hotels. Arrive in style (if you want to splurge) and rent an Audi A4 from Silvercar at $50/day. With built in naviga-tion, Sirius Radio and 3G data, you’ve got all the ingre-dients for a stress-free weekend. And since you’re only gonna have it for a weekend, why not spend the extra

M

few bucks for those built in seat warmers.

Experience It’s hard not to take home a cowboy hat and boots once you’ve been to Fort Worth, but one thing you’ll be taking home for sure is a killer experience. With a variety of historic, cultural, nightlife, and family-friendly points of interest, Fort Worth is that kind of place that makes everyone happy. Here are my top crowd-pleasing picks:

History They say Fort Worth is where the west begins. One visit to the Stockyards National Historic District and you’ll see why. The Stockyards were the last stop before drov-ers started on the Chisholm Trail to get food and supplies for the journey ahead. Today it’s a thriving echo of the

1800’s with its historic west-ern buildings inviting visitors into saloons, restaurants, and shops. Be sure to check out the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame featuring the Sterquell Wagon Collection.

Culture With Fort Worth’s Cultural District, you’ll find a collec-tion of art museums span-ning art history through the ages.

Nightlife Take your pick from one of the local Saloons in the HIstoric Stockyards or find your dancing boots and head

over to Billy Bob’s Texas for the biggest ‘honkey tonk’ in the west. If you’re looking for something better for all ages, head over to the Stockyards Rodeo. There is no better way to take in the excitement of the American West.

Family Just a few minutes from the city center you can enjoy a day of horseback riding with the whole family at Benbrook Stables. This is a fun and memorable activity for all ages. Small children can be walked in the arena area.

Free in Fort Worth!• The twice daily cattle drive in the Historic Stockyards• Live gunfighting by Legends of Texas in the Stock-yards Station right after the cattle drive• Historic buildings in the Stockyards National Historic District are great for photos• Monnig Meteorite Gallery at TCU is awesome, you can touch rocks from other planets!• Fire Station No 1 has a super cool museum of Fort Worth’s history• Stockyards Museum has some really cool western artifacts. In the Stockyards Exchange• Amon Museum of Art• Kimbell Art Museum• Cowtown Opry• Fort Worth Water Gardens• Fort Worth Botanic Gardens

History Buff TipIf you really want to take in the history of America’s Wild West, check into the historic Stockyards Hotel in center of the National Stockyards Historic District. Erected in the heart of Ameri-ca’s wild west, this historic ho-tel is furnished with antiques and western flare. It’s even

got ties to American outlaw legends Bonnie and Clyde! For more information and to plan your trip visit Fort Worth online at www.fortworth.com(In partnership with Fort Worth Convention and Visitors Bureau. All opinions my own.)

new upscale, retro-inspired, motor court concept is coming to Austin courtesy of the Valencia Group. Nostalgia will meet modern at the Lone Star

Court, with an aesthetic that’s authentically Austin and Texas Hill Country from the art in the rooms to the unique outdoor environment. According to Doyle Graham, Jr., President and CEO of the Valencia Group, “This is the most exciting new concept in the hotel industry. Lone Star Court will be a 21st century re-interpretation of the nostalgic motor court. At the same time, it will capture the essence of Austin and the Texas Hill Country; it will be one of a kind and totally unique to Texas’ capital city.”True Texas Lone Star Court will have 123 retro-inspired guest rooms with high-tech amenities. True to Austin, Lone Star Court will feature live music by an outdoor fire pit, a dipping pool reminiscent of Hill Country swimming holes, and an on-site food trailer court. Lone Star Court will draw business as well as leisure travelers to its unique “ranch-tech” property, and the res-taurant and bar will be a destination for Austi-nites as well as visitors.A Place to Meet The property will have approximately 2,000 square feet of interior meeting space, an outdoor covered pa-vilion of 1,600 square feet, and an adjacent open air lawn that adds 1,800 square feet to the total available meeting space. The Valencia Group Lone Star Court is a new concept created by Valencia Group, a Houston-based company known for its luxury independent Hotel Valencias in San Antonio and San

A Jose, the Hotel Sorella CITYCENTRE in Houston and re-cently Hotel Sorella Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. Why the Vintage Concept?

During the early days of auto tourism beginning in the mid 1940s, road-side campsites led entrepreneurs to create quaint, cabin-like places for travelers to stay. Simple cottage camps began to evolve into more sophis-ticated full-service motor courts, and the number of motels in Ameri-

ca tripled to more than 60,000 by the 1960s. The new, more modern motor courts along great American highways featured “air cooled by refrigera-tion,” television, coin-operated radios, tiled bathrooms,

easy chairs, and Serta Per-fect Sleepers. After decades of boom-ing business, mom-and-pop motels began to disappear in 1956 with the Federal-Aid Highway Act that funded construction of the interstate highway system. With little means to move their facili-ties or re-route traffic, these gems of the road gave way to corporate chains staking their claims along the new highways. Lone Star Court will take visitors back to the heyday of the roadside motor court ex-

perience, where guests can discover an era of authentic Americana along with modern amenities and the excite-ment of Austin. More InformationTo find out more about Lone Star Court, visit them online at www.lonestarcourt.com.

he Mansion at Judges’ Hill has a history as storied as the city it dwells in.

The two both had a passion for life and they used the Mansion as a fountain of new ideas. In fact, in 1929, they hired Neiman Marcus at a cost of $10,000 (today’s esti-mate of $1 million) to re-decorate the home. Since its inception, this grand venue has combined the elegance of its historical roots with the vi-brancy of its future.“Fluffy. PGA National Resort & Spa’s acclaimed Cham-pion Course – the Jack Nicklaus-designed host of the PGA TOUR’s Honda Classic and home of the famous Bear Trap – has re-opened after a major

re-grassing with cutting-edge Celebration Bermuda, and renovation of the 14th hole. Celebration Bermuda grass is now on fairways, green surrounds and tees of The Champion Course, making the popular layout even more eye-catching and playable. The new turf will resonate with world’s best golfers who annually play in the Honda Classic – one of the top events in profes-sional golf – as well as the thousands of resort guests who play the course. In addition to seven Honda Classics, The Champion Course hosted the 1983 Ryder Cup, 1987 PGA Championship, 18 Senior PGA Championships and this year’s final stage of the Web.com Q-school. “The Celebration Bermuda will provide us with major-like conditions,” says Lukus Harvey, PGA National Resort & Spa’s Director of Agronomy. “The Honda Classic field is perennially on par with golf’s four majors, and now we have the turf to provide similar conditions. Our resort guests and club members will love it because it provides a better year-around product, including upgraded irriga-tion. The grass is so dense you won’t get a bad lie.” With the new turf, The Champion Course will no lon-ger require over seeding during the off-season, allowing for faster, firmer conditions that golfers enjoy. “We can all use an extra 20 yards of roll,” says Harvey.Expanded Greens Four of The Champion’s greens – No. 1, No. 9, No. 15 and No. 17 – have been expanded to their original

PGA National Resortsize, creating more exciting pin locations for the event that kicks off the PGA TOUR’s Florida Swing. The greens remain TifEagle, one of the world’s truest putting sur-faces. The Bear Trap Evolves The Champion is well known as home to the legend-ary “Bear Trap.” The daunting 15th, 16th and 17th holes are one of the most brutal three-hole stretches in the game, with water prominently in play on each hole.

USA Today called The Bear Trap “one of the toughest stretches in golf.” As part of the reno-vation, Nicklaus moved the green on the 14th hole – which leads into the feared Bear Trap (holes 15 through 17) – 17 yards to the right, bringing water into play on the approach shot. The tee also was moved back 10 yards, and bunkers were built in front and behind the green to further strengthen the 465-yard hole.

“It seemed a shame not to have the water nearer to the green,” says Nicklaus, who re-designed the origi-nal George and Tom Fazio design in 1990 and makes tweaks to the course every year in consultation with Harvey’s staff. “It produces a little more freedom and it produces a very strong par 4 going into the Bear Trap. I honestly believe it will be more exciting, but I don’t think it will be any more difficult.”More Space for Spectators To accommodate the large crowds that aid in rais-ing millions for the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation every year (the Honda Classic set another attendance record this spring with more than 190,000 fans flocking to PGA National) 20,000 square feet of spectator mounding has been added to the 14th hole, giving fans a bird’s-eye view of the 14th green, the 15th tee and the 15th green. “Probably some of the toughest three holes in world golf, really,” says 2010 U.S. Open champion Graeme

McDowell about The Bear Trap. “You kind of just have to man up and hit the shot. You start bailing out, and you’re in trouble.” Sergio Garcia, an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour, agrees, “They’re very challenging holes, all of them. Without hitting terrible shots, you can make a double, a par and a bogey, and you leave those holes shooting 3 over and you don’t feel like you hit bad shots.”Hail to The Champion “The revered Champion Course is a ma-jor component of our puzzle when it comes to creating championship experiences and makes us a world-class golf resort and lifestyle com-munity,” states Joel Paige, Vice President and Managing Director of PGA National Resort & Spa. Played as a par 70 and 7,140 yards in tournaments, The Champion has ranked as the most-difficult course on the PGA TOUR (for non-majors) three of the last five years. It ranked second overall in 2010 and 2011. The Champion Course and Honda Classic have pro-duced world-class including world No. 1 Rory McIlroy, who held off Tiger Woods in 2012 when Woods charged the field with a final-round 62. Hall of Famer and lo-cal resident Ernie Els won the 2008 Honda Classic. Y.E. Yang, the 2009 winner, went on to claim the PGA Championship that summer, becom-ing the only golfer to chase down Woods in the final round of a major. For resort guests, it plays to a par 72, with the 7,045-yard layout featur-ing generous landing areas and spa-cious greens. Though a challenging course, five sets of tees provide play-ability for players of all skill levels. Great Courses PGA National also features The Palmer, The Squire, The Fazio and The Estates courses. The legendary resort destination has the unique dis-tinction of being home to both the David Leadbetter Golf Academy and Dave Pelz Scoring Game School, along

with offering a PGA TOUR-level fitting experi-ence at the PGA National Club Fitting Lab. For more PGA National Resort & Spa information: www.pgaresort.com or call 561.627.2000.

PGA National is not only a golfer’s delight, but an in-credible destination get-away for the whole family. Sure, if you LOVE golf, this is the place to be. But, if you just want that exclusive resort feel, PGA National doesn’t disap-point. First off, the spa is a MUST. Topped off with a soak in one of their three mineral baths all while having a delectable cocktail. Or, you can find yourself at their amazing pool that offers incredible views, delectable food and a myriad of cold drink options to choose from. As evening beckons, why not catch up on the latest sports scene and hit

up the iBar lobby bar. Always a hub for those finishing up a round of golf or just getting ready for a night out on the town. Another “must” is the signature Ironwood Steak & Seafood, which is just one of two Palm Beach restaurants to earn the Wine Spectator 2012 Award of Excellence. From mouth-watering steaks, to tantalizing seafood, this restaurant will leave you filled with incredible memories

of a wonderful dining experience. Escape to iClub Piano Bar, where magic happens and memories begin. Discover the romance of live enter-tainment that speaks to the soul. Revel in the moment as your cares drift away like musical notes escaping into the night. Overall, a visit to Palm Beach means a visit to the PGA Nation-al Resort and a wealth

of newfound memories.

armel-by-the-Sea is a bit of a conundrum. It’s a beach town, but feels more like a mountain retreat. This is exactly the feeling Carmel wishes to achieve in a community described as

a village in the forest by the sea. The Hofsas House Hotel fits right in with its multiple personality, an American hotel that makes guests feel like they’ve been transported to a family-run inn in Bavaria.Family-owned The first thing that sets the Hofsas House Hotel apart from the usual American hotel is that it is in fact family-owned and has been for three genera-tions. Donna Hofsas founded the hotel in the late 1940s when she and her husband moved from Los Angeles to Carmel. The hotel started as four cot-tages, one which served as the family residence and three that were rented to guests. The four original cottages still exist today as rooms. In 1957 25 rooms and a swimming pool were added, and in the 1960s Donna further ex-panded by adding a meeting room and the north wing. When Donna passed away in 1981, her son Jack Theis took over the hotel until his passing in 1996. His wife Doris and son Scott then ran the hotel until 2000, when Jack and Doris’s daughter Carrie took over management and is the current owner and General Manager. The Pink Hotel The Hofsas House Hotel doesn’t look like your standard American hotel either. The first thing guests will notice as they drive up is that the hotel is pink. Next they will notice the faux half-timbered Bavarian style, with cheerful frescoes around the windows and a large mural, painted by local artist Maxine Albro after the first expansion. Hydran-geas bloom in blue and pink along the front walk. Rather than cookie cutter rooms, the Hofsas House Hotel offers guests 38 individually deco-rated rooms, each of which were designed by Doris Theis. All rooms have Dutch doors which open the rooms to the sea breeze. Experiences Experiences

experienceshe Maldives in the Indian Ocean is an exotic hide-away with palm

lined sandy beaches and turquoise waters that many people believe is a “paradise on earth”. The Maldives are made up of over 1200 tiny islands with roughly 30,000 square miles, making it one of the most spread out geo-graphical countries in the world. Most of the islands are uninhabited, but many contain exclusively only one resort on each of its islands. They have devel-oped the country to cater to the high-end resort tour-ism market and tourism is the main source of income for the people who live here.Kurumba Resort As a Westerner, you may have only heard about the Maldives as a holiday for the rich and fa-mous, but Kurumba Resort has changed all of that! Now you too, can experi-ence the lap of luxury at a value point that makes this THE most exotic vacation you will take this year. Oh, and by the way, it has been awarded the Traveler’s Choice Award by Trip Advi-sor as the #1 All Inclusive Resort in Asia and the #3 All Inclusive Resort in the World, so it is hard to beat! At the Airport - Team members are readily avail-able and awaiting your arrival with a sign at the airport. One thing that makes this adventure spe-

cial will be having Kurumba’s private speedboat waiting for you at the Male airport to take you to your island resort getaway, which will only take 20 minutes. Upon

arrival to the island, they will greet you at the dock and bring your bags to the main outdoor lobby with a welcoming coconut sorbet, where soon enough, you will be whisked away by golf cart to your beachfront villa. They have the process down to perfection, which saves you time and puts you into ‘relax mode’ right away on your vacation. And although this resort is one of the oldest in the islands, built here in 1972,

they have maintained the property and its landscape to pristine levels and have used that time to perfect its exemplary customer service. At the Villa - The beachfront deluxe villa that I staid in was luxurious and had its own covered patio with a front row seat to the Indian Ocean’s turquoise waters and crystal clear sands that will keep you mesmerized for hours. When you finally move from the king sized bed to the cov-ered patio to the oversized bath-room, you will be delighted that such a wonderful bathroom exists. In all its glory, it has an outdoor rain shower in a garden of sorts, with a soaking, jet-powered tub that has an open-ing to the garden outside. You can stay in there for hours, but you better not be-cause there is so much more to do.What is there to do on Kurumba Island? Spa – The Veli Spa is a true Maldivian experience set in their lush gardens and you should have a spa experience while on the island. I chose the Thai massage, since I was on this side of the world and Thai massages are a bit unusual to get in America. However, they have a complete spa menu for you to choose from. Restaurants – The resort has many dining plans avail-able, so depending on what you need for the day, they have everything from half board to dine around all in-clusive. It is important to remember that they have to im-port everything on to the island and so the costs involved are increased due to that. There are a lot of choices for different restaurants and they have everything from Japanese to Italian to Thai and Middle Eastern as well as the main dining area with a buffet, so there are no worries about the type of food available. I tried four of the restaurants and Thila, by far, was my favorite, but I also enjoyed the simple pizza I ordered from one of the restaurants. Activities - There are all types of recreational and sports type packages available • Sunset and Dolphin Discovery Cruise –A fun eve-ning cruise where we saw quite a few spinner dolphins

jumping out of the water for a great show at sunset. • Daily Snorkeling – The snorkeling is easy with the local house reef just outside the breakers. Snorkel-ing equipment was provided free of charge and with that amazing reef, you could go alone, with a private guide or a group. • Diving – Many of the best dive sites are located

only within a 5-30 min-ute boat dive trip from the resort, including the Mana Point wreck dive. •Male City Tour – Go into the capital city of Male for a tour of this culturally rich, yet bustling city on the tiny, nearby island. There are many more activities to choose from, however I chose to only mention a few. I went on this trip as a single traveler, but I did not feel out of place at any time during my visit to this exotic resort. I can highly recommend it for all kinds of travelers, especially if you do not have a lot of time and want to get into ‘relax mode’ right away. There

were also many couples and even families there as well. I wanted to mention that this resort epitomizes the “value luxury” concept, where luxury is king and value is queen. While there are over-the-top luxury experi-ences in the Maldives, this resort is at the perfect price point and balances luxury with value. What: Kurumba ResortWhere: Kurumba, Maldives, Indian OceanRooms: 180 rooms from superior rooms to deluxe resi-dences with private pools and everything in betweenAmenities: • Very high quality Molten Brown bath soaps, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion• Free In-room Wi Fi – it worked amazing well for such a remote island• Good quality beach towels in the villa• Free laundry service for 25 items every 4 daysTrip Advisor Rating: #10 out of #171 hotels in the Mal-divesCosts: upwards of $300 USD per day for the beachfront villa plus the food program that runs $55 to $155 per person per day depending on the season.
