an Antonio’s Riverwalk has long been known for it’s incredible views and ambiance, and now has another truly inspiring reason to boast. The luxuri-

ous Hotel Valencia, the city’s only contemporary small luxury hotel, is nestled along the world-famous River-walk offering guests breathtaking views and amenities while bringing an exclusive brand of luxury to this tour-ist-friendly region.Old World meets New World The Hotel Valencia offers guests a blend of timeless and romantic sights, sounds and scenes. The hotel’s interior incorporates elements of nature to create a one-of-a-kind, yet timeless look. The hotel’s architecture features the rich, deep color finishes of a Tuscan farmhouse set against a dis-tinct backdrop, with step-out balconies, plastered vault dome ceilings reminiscent of a 15th century monastery and trickling water over candle-lit brick walls. The second floor of the property boasts the hip “V Bar” - where locals and hotel guests can mingle and take in the breathtaking views of the Riverwalk. Venture up to the third floor and get taken away to another world in the open-air courtyard with Los Ange-les-based designer, Dodd Mitchell’s signature reflect-ing pond, which sits at the base of a dramatic fountain backlit by a rhythmic line of fire. Amenities and More Hotel Valencia features a number of amenities unique to the city, including complimentary high-speed Internet access available throughout the hotel. Technol-ogy makes going from curbside to bedside a non-stop trip. All guest rooms feature a posh, custom-made, seven-layer “Hotel Valencia Bed,” wrapped in luxurious cotton linens and topped with a down-filled comforter and a lush faux mink throw. he citizens of San Antonio will cel-ebrate their city’s diverse history, heritage and culture for 11 days start-

ing April 15, 2010—the 119th anniversary of Fiesta® San Antonio.. Fiesta® San Antonio takes place every April to honor the memory of the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Ja-cinto. More than three million people take part in Fiesta. They can choose from more than 100 events that contain something to please every age range, pocketbook and taste. Some 100 local nonprofit groups, members of the Fiesta San Antonio Com-mission, stage most of the events, with the help of 75,000 volunteers. Local military organizations also take part, producing their own activities and supporting many others. It’s a really big party, with an eco-nomic impact of $284 million for the city of San Antonio. Fiesta events include three major parades—two along Broadway and past the Alamo, and one on the San An-tonio River, where the floats really do float. San Antonians and visitors can attend fancy balls, a queen’s coronation, a satirical review or a carni-val. They can choose from Louisiana’s cuisine at Taste of New Orleans, all kinds of oysters at the St. Mary’s Oyster Bake or the multicul-tural offerings of Night in Old San Antonio. Musical options range from Tejano to jazz to Mariachi to rock ’n’ roll to Big Band. History buffs can remember the Alamo at the Pilgrimage to the Alamo or The Alamo: These Sacred Walls. Want athletics? Look for races, soccer, rugby, lacrosse and more. Overseeing this massive effort is a single nonprofit organization—the Fiesta® San Antonio Commission. The commission is governed by an all-volunteer board of community leaders and representatives from its 100 local nonprofit participating member organizations. This dedicated group works year ’round coordinating the

T

Fiesta San Antonio

thousands of details and day-to-day tasks essential to plan this huge citywide event. The commission also serves as a liaison between those nonprofit members, local military activities and the City of San Antonio. City services are essential to the

conduct of Fiesta.

The Fiesta Commission returns more than $1 million to the community each year: --It gives allocations to Fiesta events that are not financially self-supporting. --It provides bleachers for seating sales to the Battle of Flowers® and Fiesta Flam-beau® Parade associations. --It licenses more than 100 small nonprofit groups (church groups, youth groups, civic organizations) to sell street chairs along the parade route.

The commission receives no government funding. Its income comes from corporate partnerships, sales in The Fiesta Store®, membership dues and proceeds from the Fiesta Carnival. The Fiesta San Antonio Commission is a nonprofit organization that plans, coordinates and preserves Fi-esta San Antonio through the support of its participating member organizations. Visit its website at fiesta-sa.org or its Facebook page at facebook.com/FiestaSA.

ashiontini is Valencia Group’s most popular fash-ion-forward event, pioneered by Hotel Valencia Riverwalk. Taking place from the Fall through the

Spring, “Fashiontini Thursdays” allow guests the op-portunity to come and sip our signature martini while watching the latest fashions from local boutiques on the runway. FUNdraising... For each event, the hotels also partner with a non-profit organization, in order to show their commitment to bettering their communities. In the past, they have partnered with non-profits such as The American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” movement, Mar-row Match and the Red Cross. In September of 2009, Hotel Valencia Riverwalk kicked off their 2009-2010 Fashiontini season by intro-ducing new features to the event. They began accept-ing nominations for a guest makeover, to include hair and makeup, for a big reveal at the end of the fashion show. They also began their “Fashionista VIP” program, allowing guests to gain exclusive seating at the fash-ion shows and entrance into the after-parties, which were also a part of the new event offerings. Guests of Fashiontini could stick around after each event for a Vbar after party, or head to the hotel’s acclaimed Citrus restaurant where Chef Jeffrey Balfour prepared a special 3-course meal. Hotel Sorella joins the Party After its recent grand opening, Hotel Sorella quickly adopted this popular event into their lineup, and is offering the event once each quarter. Fashiontini has quickly become the place to be and be seen. Valencia group properties offer a hip and sophisticated experience unlike any other. ightlife in Las Vegas can change in the blink of an eye. So we like to check in with the people who are out in the

clubs every week to let you know about what’s hot right now. I talked with Melissa Beecroft from Angel Management Group to find out what clubs are doing to stay on top and how you can find the right hot spot for your next Las Vegas trip.

Dale Blasingame: Talk a bit about your job. What kind of work do you do with nightclubs in Las Vegas?

Melissa Beecroft: I promote for several different clubs/venues in Las Vegas, but I am a native as well. That’s truly hard to come by in Ve-gas these days! I’ve seen so many clubs come and go and so many people come and go in this town, so I really feel as though I have a great under-standing of Las Vegas and how nightlife works. I’ve al-ways enjoyed making sure my friends and I could always get into the hottest clubs for free and without waiting in line – and when I was recently laid off I couldn’t have imagined a better profession to get into.

DB: What are your favorite clubs and why?

Vanity at Hard Rock

MB: I love house music, which isn’t always easy to come by in Las Vegas, so I prefer the clubs that do play a great deal of house music - or at least a mix. My favor-ite would definitely have to be Vanity at the Hard Rock Hotel for Godskitchen on Thursday nights. A brand new, gorgeous club combined with the world’s top DJs and a great reputation for catering to the locals – what more could you ask for? Wet Republic Ultra Pool at the MGM is the place to be for sun, fun, mojitos and more. With the rise of the pool parties in Las Vegas, Wet Republic has decided to declare war on nightlife. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy all the pleasures of a club sitting next to an ultra pool?

DB: Is there still a “flavor of the month” mentality with

clubs in Las Vegas?

Studio 54 at MGM Grand

MB: Clubs do come and go and I am proud to have experienced almost all of them at one time or another. Classics like Studio 54 will always be a club staple for me and I recommend it to the novice and the experi-enced alike.

DB: What does a nightclub have to do to stay on top?

MB: Reinvention is the key, but so is the experience. Ev-eryone wants to be the biggest and the best, but I think one of the biggest elements is atmosphere and personal-ity. You could have the most elaborate, expensive club, but give your patrons a hard time or bad night and it will leave a bad taste in their mouth. I’ve always relied on my friends, clients, etc. to spread the word about a club they’ve been to. If they’ve had a good time then they will come back and so will their friends. A bad experience will go the distance as well. A promoter or host is always going to tell you that their club is the biggest or the best, but your friends that have actually experienced it for themselves will give you a “real” opinion.

his year brings new experiences, new accolades and a new international airport to the 15 beach communities that make up Beaches of South Wal-

ton, along Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast. Frommer’s, one of the best-selling travel guides in the world, selected the area as one of the top 12 travel destinations for 2010. With Southwest Airlines as the lead service part-ner at the new Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport, planning travel to this charming 26-mile stretch of beaches for a weekend getaway or week-long vaca-tion will be easier than ever. Plus, there are new places to eat and shop and a host of interesting new activities to create memories with family and friends.A New Airport Arrives Construction will be complete and the first flight will arrive at the new $330 million Northwest Florida Beach-es International Airport in May 2010. The state-of-the-art international airport is being built on 1,300 acres of a 4,000-acre site donated by the St. Joe Company. The new airport replaces an existing airport that was built in 1948 and is the first airport to be opened in the United States in more than 10 years. The “greenfield” site al-lows ample room for current operations and room to grow to meet greater demand over the next 50 years. The new airport will improve air service to the region; provide an opportunity for economic growth; and protect West Bay and its watershed—a conservation area that covers approximately 60 square miles and includes 33 miles of bay front and 44 miles of creek front. It is one of the largest conservation sites set aside in Florida. The Airport Authority has committed that the new air-port terminal will be certified “green” under the Leader-ship in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) pro-gram of the U.S. Green Building Council, which reflects Beaches of South Walton’s own commitment to protect and preserve this beautiful coastline.Delicious Additions to the Restaurant Scene A small fine dining restaurant nestled in Rosemary Beach, Restaurant Paradis is getting rave reviews. Open for dinner only, Paradis’ menu focuses on coastal cuisine and chefs Mark Eichin and Shaun O’Brien, owners of Bistro Bijoux, draw inspiration from the rich flavors of the coastal area to create innovative and tantalizing dishes from fresh locally grown ingredients to match each season, such as the Paradis Crab Cake, a pan-seared jumbo lump crab cake over creamed Silver Queen corn and a chipotle oil drizzle. The lounge at Paradis is a great place for meeting friends and neighbors, and the restaurant welcomes wedding receptions, rehearsal

he journeys we take are often as exhausting as they are exhilarating. The

thrill we feel as we travel to a new environment may be under-cut by our sensitivity to change, strange surroundings, and forced shifts in our usual habits. Air, road, and sea travel can be extremely taxing, and many people find sleeping soundly in a strange bed exceedingly difficult. There are, however, nu-merous ways of taking the stress out of both short voyages and lengthy sojourns. Since much of the comfort we feel in our day-to-day lives stems from the fact that we enjoy the regularity of routine, adapting your typical customs to correspond with your travel schedule can alleviate the unease you experience while away from your home. Likewise, when you ground yourself by honoring the rituals that are a part of your daily life, you’ll no longer feel like you’re out of your element. If you find yourself discon-certed by the foreignness of your surroundings when travel-ing, packing a few reassuring items from your home in your luggage can help you stay bal-anced. Photographs of loved ones, a favorite tea or snack, soft slippers, or even your own pillow can soothe the rigors associated with travel by plane, car, train, and ship while en route. Holding a crys-tal, gemstone, talisman, or medicine bag in your hand during particularly stressful periods of travel can help you stay relaxed and alert. Items imbued with healing or calming energy can help you destress once you reach your destination. As you unpack your travel altar, light a stick of sweet-smelling incense, or bask in the glow of a meditation candle, you’ll gradually begin to feel more grounded and serene in your new location.

Javier Garza

During the course of your journey, try not to forget to in-dulge in those activities that center you and sustain your emotional equilibrium. If you tend to sleep and wake at the same time each day, maintaining that schedule will ensure you stay strong and healthy. Taking time out of your voyage agenda to write in a journal, meditate, do yoga, or walk can help you reconnect with yourself in an alien setting. However you restore your tranquility, your conscious choice to surround yourself with comfort-ing possessions and focus on your well-being will make traveling a joy.

It’s been hard to miss Canada lately. Fresh off a spectacular job of hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics, the country to America’s north has been every-

where. One of the most common things I heard people say in the past couple of weeks was, “Vancouver looks beautiful. I have to get up there.” So I went to my favorite Cana-dian to get the scoop. Chances are you know her as well. Along with her long-time boy-friend Gene Simmons of KISS and their two children, Shannon Tweed is a reality TV star on the hit A&E series Gene Simmons Family Jewels. I talked with Shannon about what you need to know about Canada and what you can’t afford to miss. -DaleDale Blasingame: Vancouver was just in the global spot-light because of the Olympics. What’s your favorite thing about Vancouver?Shannon Tweed: It’s hard to have a favorite part of Vancouver! I have a few. I love Yaletown at night and Gastown during the day. I like good old shopping down-town, too. There are beaches but I don’t think people necessarily think of sand when they picture life in Van-couver. However, they’re quite nice and I believe there’s even a topless one! (She’s correct – Wreck Beach.) One of my favorite memories is when Gene and I took the kids bicycling around Stanley Park along the sea wall. It was breathtaking. I have a home in Whistler and always look forward to the drive from Vancouver to Whistler. It is, in a word, spectacular.DB: Describe the area where you grew up a bit. What is life like in Newfoundland?ST: I was born in a small town in Newfoundland. My fa-ther was a mink rancher back then, so we lived on acres of ranch land – lots of woods and ponds and horseback riding and frog catching. We bused to school along the east coast and during certain times of the year you could see the icebergs and whales very close to shore. The beaches there are rockier than southern beaches, but the summers are still beautiful. We used to go and scoop up kippers (little fish) with our buckets during the summer. They came in droves and you couldn’t help but get some. The waters were thick with them.DB: I think many Americans assume all Canadians can ski or play hockey. How far off is that assumption? Are there ski resorts on every corner?ST: We do get four seasons all across Canada and the summers are hot. I know a lot of folks think we speak

Shannon Tweed

French and live in igloos, but you can equate our weath-er in the middle of Canada to that of Chicago. You can compare Newfoundland to New York City’s weather. I never learned to ski because either my mom decided that seven kids and skis was not a great idea or the trip to the ‘hill’ would be too far. There isn’t a ski resort in every town and there isn’t snow year round.DB: What’s the one thing tourists should know about Canada?ST: Tourists should know Canada has everything! We have some of the best skiing, fishing, music and art festivals in the world. There are beaches, mountains, prairies and lakes. And you will never find a friendlier, more accommodating people or a more diverse melting pot of cultures to sink your teeth into. Americans should know we speak mainly English. French is the second lan-guage. The driving rules are the same but signage is in kilometers. Centigrade and the metric system have been in place for 30 or so years, but most everything else will be very familiar.DB: Which part of Canada do you recommend for first-time visitors?ST: First-time visitors should try either coast, any of the Maritime Provinces (you’ll find some thick, almost Irish/Scottish accents there and the loveliest people) or beau-tiful, cosmopolitan British Columbia. Or you can take a train tour. I could go on and on…

You can catch Shannon and her family every Sunday on Gene Simmons Family Jewels. The new season pre-mieres March 21st at 9/8c on A&E. You can also follow Shannon on Twitter (@shannonleetweed).
