St Catherine’s Hospice Crawley @stchospice

Welcome to the spring edition of Matters, St Catherine’s Hospice supporter magazine. “I’m Pam Bing, a retired employee of St Catherine’s and now a patient. For 27 years, I worked here as Catering Manager and growing up, my two daughters always said it was like the hospice was my third child. It wasn’t a job, it was part of my life, so it’s a real pleasure to write this edition’s welcome.

When you’re a patient here, you know that whatever you need will be provided, and p8 highlights how your support helps St Catherine’s fulfil people’s wishes. When you’re ill and first referred, it’s natural to panic. I did, and Jodie who shares her story on p4 did too, but thanks to St Catherine’s, Jodie’s now feeling more like her normal self again. And it’s not just us patients that St Catherine’s looks after. On p10, Jo explains how the hospice supported her whole family when her mother in law was ill. For me, and many others, it’s reassuring to know that your family will be looked after when they need it most. Thank you for everything you do to support the hospice.

This edition also gives you lots of exciting new ways to help raise more money. Whether you challenge yourself with an overseas trek to China (p7), donate your furniture (p7), attend the brand new Memory Meadow event (p11) or help celebrate 10 years of the Midnight Walk (p5), it doesn’t matter. It just matters that you show your support. Without it, St Catherine’s couldn’t exist and it’s thanks to you, that the life changing medical, emotional and spiritual care St Catherine’s gives to patients like me is here for local people.

Although it doesn’t seem nearly enough, on behalf of everyone who receives the hospice’s expert care, I want to say thank you. Thank you for choosing to support St Catherine’s and thank you for helping make what’s a sad time for us and our family and friends a little brighter. I don’t know where I, or many others, would be without St Catherine’s, so I hope you feel proud of the difference you’ve made to our lives.

Thanks to you, I won’t have to face death unsupported, in pain or alone - that’s one of the biggest comforts of all.”

Pam Bing

LATEST NEWS

Taking St Catherine’s into the futureLast year was a big year for St Catherine’s Hospice. We changed the way we look and plans for a new hospice were approved by Mid Sussex District Council. It’s been a long-held ambition to reach more people who need us, and these developments mean we’re moving closer to achieving this.

Our rebrand and new hospice weren’t decisions we made lightly. They were brave, bold moves. We owed it to our founders, and to everyone who needs our help today and in the future, to ensure we’re ready to respond to the ever increasing need for our care. At a time when the NHS is stretched, and our population is aging, we need to raise more money so we can care for more people. It wasn’t acceptable for us to hide in the shadows any longer; it was time to step out.

We exist to make life less difficult for people coping with terminal illness, but after research showed our local community didn’t know about us or the ways we could help them, we had to do something. If people

don’t know we exist, how will they ever know we can help them? This lack of awareness also affects our fundraising. Every year, we raise more than £6 million thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, but if other people don’t understand what we do, or know we need funding, why would they support us?

We want you to hear about the difference we make to people, but also to realise that without your help, we wouldn’t be able to be there at the hardest time of someone’s life. It’s that simple. While our hospice exists for people with life limiting illnesses and those close to them, and is powered by staff and volunteers, it’s sustained by people like you.

Your support makes a genuine difference and we’ll never forget that - thank you.

PATIENT STORY

Jodie’s story Jodie is one of our patients. Here she explains how your support allows us to manage her illness, put things in perspective and has given her hope.

“When I was diagnosed with cancer I became very ill; that’s when someone first mentioned St Catherine’s Hospice.

I thought hospices were just where people died When I heard St Catherine’s, I panicked. I thought I was going to die because I thought hospices just made people comfortable for death, but I couldn’t have been more wrong.

A St Catherine’s nurse visited me at home to explain how they could help. She managed my medication and gave me numbers to call, day or night. When I started having panic attacks, being able to call St Catherine’s at 3am was invaluable. I’d never experienced anxiety before, but having a calming voice on the end of the phone was so reassuring and instantly helped me feel better.

It’s surprised me how much is offered hereI’ve had counselling, hand massages and acupuncture. After the therapies, I’d feel like a different person. All the care’s been amazing, and my nurse has been amazing too. She’s always had time for me, calling regularly to check I’m ok, and has suggested different things to manage my pain which has made a huge difference.

When I turned 40 last October, I decided to raise money for St Catherine’s. My husband organised a party and we asked people to donate to the hospice in exchange for their drinks. I had a fantastic night, and raised more than £500, which I hope can help someone else experience the kind of care I have.

St Catherine’s is completely different to what I thought it’d beAfter my diagnosis, I went through a really sad time, I cried all day at one point thinking about how I won’t see my family or my children grow up, but the hospice has helped me put everything into perspective. As a local charity, everyone should help St Catherine’s. The way I’ve been treated has been unbelievable and rather than misery and ending, St Catherine’s has given me hope. They’ve helped me be strong and get back to my normal self.”

Your support means local people don’t have to face their illness alone. Thank you for helping us be there to help Jodie and other people to focus on living, as well as they can, for as long as they can.

Feeling spurred on by Jodie’s story? Then pull on your trainers and join us for this year’s Midnight Walk. Every year for the last 10 years, hundreds of ladies have given up sleep to walk through the night to raise funds for our care... But not this year!

To join the fun, sign up online at: www.stch.org.uk/midnightwalk

To celebrate the Midnight Walk’s 10th anniversary, we’ve ripped up the rulebook and invited men and children aged 10 and over to take part for the first time! We’ve also added three brand new walking routes and an earlier start time.

Taking place in Horsham on Saturday 10 June, the walk, sponsored by Gatwick Airport, starts at 10pm and offers a choice of seven, 13 or 20 mile walking routes. And people are already signing up, including Peter Kersley, 31, who will be walking with daughter, Megan, 13, and mother in law, Diane. Peter said:

“My wife, Lauren, was cared for by St Catherine’s, in our home and at the hospice; her story was told in the last edition of Matters. Sadly, it’s not until you need the hospice’s care that you realise how special it is. I can’t wait to walk and help raise money so that St Catherine’s can be there to provide its special

care for others. By coincidence, this year’s walk falls on mine and Lauren’s wedding anniversary, and I can’t think of a better way to remember my wonderful wife.” Last year’s Midnight Walk raised an incredible £65,000, but this year, we’re hoping even more of you will be inspired to pull on your walking shoes and help us raise more money.

Melanie Wrightson, Community Engagement Manager at Gatwick Airport, said: “We’re really proud to be sponsoring such a special year of St Catherine’s Midnight Walk. We can’t wait to help our local hospice celebrate, and we hope you’ll join us for what is already shaping up to be a truly fabulous evening.”

Now’s your time to shine - will you take it?

IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Did you know that, thanks to your support, around eight in 10 of the people we care for are looked after in the comfort of their own home?

We know that the majority of people wish to spend their final days, hours and minutes in the familiarity of their home, surrounded by a lifetime of memories and personal mementoes. To help make this wish a reality, our community team gives care at home 365 days a year across Sussex and East Surrey.

The team is made up of nurses, doctors, counsellors and therapists, who all work together to ensure people at home receive the same high quality, expert care that our inpatients receive. Wherever possible, they also help people who want to die at home fulfil their last wish. They do this by making practical adaptations, like moving someone’s bedroom downstairs to make life easier, or sourcing equipment like a walking frame so someone can move

about independently for as long as possible. Our Practical Care Team also visit people at home to provide personal care like a bath or shower, and emotional care. Sometimes giving someone space to talk over a cup of tea can be all the help they need.

Linda Henson leads our East Surrey community nursing team, who work closely with our doctors, therapists and counsellors – as well as non- St Catherine’s staff, like GPs and district nurses. They mainly work out of our Oxted site and here, she tells us more about their vital work.

“Central to our work is providing advice and guidance in managing the complex symptoms of people’s illnesses, while also supporting those

most important to them. This includes helping people to make informed decisions and express their wishes about their own care, including their death, based on realistic expectations. Every day, the people we help and their courage are a constant inspiration. This is what makes our roles so meaningful and fulfilling.”

We believe that wherever possible, people should die in a place of their choosing. You’re helping us to reach this goal.

AT THE HOSPICE

We know that coming to the hospice can be nerve-wracking for many people, so our volunteer Hospice Hosts, who work alongside our Reception Team, work hard to put people at ease.

Whether it’s a patient being admitted, a visiting relative, or a member of the public popping by for tea and cake, our Hospice Hosts give a warm welcome, and make sure that, whatever the nature of someone’s visit, it’s the best it can be.

Every day is different on reception so our hosts have a varied volunteering role. From helping receptionists answer and direct calls, answering visitors’ questions, welcoming patients and families, or providing a listening ear and reassurance to a relative, no job is too big or small.

Each of our visitors has a different reason for being here, but we want everyone’s experience to be positive so our Hospice Hosts fulfil a crucial role.

Sandra Cramp joined us as a volunteer host just over a year ago, and she’s found it incredibly rewarding. She said:

“I thoroughly enjoy working here and have met some very inspiring and friendly people. There’s always people to guide and support us and I feel privileged to belong to such an outstanding local charity.”

To find out more about becoming a Hospice Host, call our Volunteering Team on: 01293 447351.

What makes us different? While we can’t promise to make everything ok for our patients, we can stand by their side and help them live life to the very fullest. We care about the small things and it’s often these things that make the biggest difference. From hosting bingo sessions in our communal lounge to holding art classes, we do whatever we can to make people feel like their old self.

When someone on our ward said they’d like to visit a pub for a final drink, two nurses took him, allowing him to see his friends and enjoy socialising again, and when someone was desperate to dress independently, our Occupational Therapist introduced a button hook, giving him his dignity back.

Wayne Stepney, Front of House Services Manager and his Hospitality Team help fulfil the wishes of people we care for. He said:

“From little things like making sure someone has their favourite morning paper, to bigger things, like arranging a wedding reception at the hospice, we do all we can to make people feel special. When someone mentioned to a ward nurse they’d seen a nice looking prawn cocktail in their morning paper, our chef surprised them with one at lunch, and when someone else requested haggis, we went to the butchers and bought some, so we could create their chosen meal.” We’re proud to provide people with whatever they need, whenever they need it and we’re much more than just a place to die. With our help, people can focus on living and achieving the things that matter most.

A Warm Welcome

Flying high with Gatwick Airport

Support from the business community is vital to us, so we were thrilled to be selected as Gatwick Airport’s local Charity of the Year.

Since our partnership with Gatwick began, it’s offered us exciting opportunities to raise awareness of our expert care - something that’s crucial to help us reach more people. As a valued supporter, we’re excited to share with you that at the time of going to print, our partnership has smashed our fundraising target and raised an incredible £70,000 in just under a year.

This wouldn’t have been possible without the enthusiasm of Gatwick staff, who’ve not only thrown themselves into their own fundraising events, but taken on challenges like our Dragon Boat Festival and Santas vs Elves runs too. And it’s not just staff who’ve been showing their support to our hospice. Passengers have also been generously donating to the coin globes in both airport terminals.

Lucy Bowden, Philanthropy Manager at St Catherine’s, said:

“We’re looking forward to more exciting fundraising activities with Gatwick Airport as our successful partnership goes from strength to strength. We can’t thank Gatwick enough for their enthusiasm and fantastic support.” And remember, you can help too. If you or anyone you know is travelling through Gatwick, don’t forget to look out for the coin globes, and lighten your luggage load by giving us some change.

Diary at the ready? Our Dragon Boat Festival is back! Our annual Dragon Boat Festival is one of our biggest and most exhilarating fundraisers. To make sure you don’t miss out, save Sunday 10 September 2017 in your diaries now!

We really appreciate the incredible support we receive from our local community, who come out in force to cheer on local companies as they race across Tilgate Lake, enjoy traditional stalls and refreshments, and soak up the family-friendly atmosphere.

Last year’s festival raised more than £62,000 - the most we’ve ever raised. This year, we’re celebrating our 15th anniversary. Please join us so we can raise even more to help people who need us.

RELATIVE’S STORY

Jo’s Story When someone you love is terminally ill, the whole family can need a bit of support. Here, Jo Cater shares the difference we made, thanks to your support, when caring for her mother in law, Eve.

“Right from the very beginning when I first met Eve, I called her Mumsy. It fitted and she liked it; that’s who she was to me. Mumsy lived with me, my husband Mark and daughter Lucy.

She was as fit as a fiddle, but in January last year, developed a nasty cough that wouldn’t go away. After lots of appointments, we learned she had cancer and then the heartbreaking day came when we were told that nothing more could be done; she’d need palliative care. Mumsy was referred to St Catherine’s Hospice, which was something I couldn’t even bear to think about. But St Catherine’s were amazing. The community team got all sorts of balls rolling, including benefits that Mumsy was entitled to, a disabled badge for the car; just little things that made a huge difference. At all times someone was listening, caring and knew exactly what we needed. St Catherine’s were also there for us as a family to help and give advice on how we could best help Mumsy.

But as was inevitable, Mumsy’s health went downhill and the day came when she was admitted into St Catherine’s; I was terrified and didn’t want to visit her. I thought it would be a scary place, with a black cloud hanging over it. But when Lucy came home, so full of passion and excitement, saying how wonderful and lovely it was, how people bought their pets in, how a drinks trolley came round and you could have lots of cake - I realised I was very wrong.

One summer evening we wheeled Mumsy out into the beautiful gardens, so she could enjoy the early evening sun. She said that she fancied eating fish and chips out of the paper wrapper. Mark and Lucy nipped out to get some and by the time they got back there were warmed plates, knives and forks for us. We had a lovely evening sitting in the last of the day’s sun as the four of us ate our fish and chips. I will keep that memory with me forever of how happy we all were.

Not long after, Mumsy passed away at St Catherine’s surrounded by her family. We were bereft, but found peace in the fact that she’d died exactly as she’d wanted; at St Catherine’s, with her family and even her favourite nurse with her. It was as peaceful as death can be. As we left, a nurse said “don’t you worry; we’ll make her look beautiful, like she’d want to be.”

The days after her death were hard and we all needed a bit of support. Lucy had only ever known

Mumsy living with us, so she had counselling through St Catherine’s bereavement service. This gave Lucy the chance to talk about the loss of her beloved Nanny with someone who truly understood what she was going through. As her parents, Mark and I benefited from this, as Lucy opened up to us and shared her feelings. We were so proud of how Lucy had looked after her Nanny when she was alive, and after her counselling we were even more proud of her – if that was possible.

We’re now slowly adjusting to life without Mumsy, but I know we’ll always be grateful for what St Catherine’s gave her – and us.”

Our care doesn’t finish when someone dies. We’re there to offer relatives support for as long as they need it. We hope stories like Jo’s on page 10, might inspire you to leave us a gift, so we can be there for future generations to come.

Has making a will been on your to-do list for a while? During St Catherine’s Hospice Make A Will Fortnight, you can tick your will off the list and help support us at the same time.

From 8 - 19 May 2017, solicitors across Sussex and Surrey have set aside a limited number of appointments, free of charge*, to help you make or update your will. Instead of paying the solicitor for their professional advice, you’ll make a donation to our hospice.

The suggested minimum donations are: • Single will - £100

• Joint wills - £150

Please consider the value of the time and advice given by your solicitor.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, we’re able to provide all our care free of charge. While you take advantage of this scheme to provide for your own loved ones, we hope you might also consider leaving a gift in your will to St Catherine’s. It costs you nothing today to help us provide care tomorrow.

“Making a will is a very daunting experience, but the solicitor made my father and myself feel very at ease and was very welcoming and helpful.” Kim How to make your appointmentPlease contact your chosen solicitor from the list on the right by Friday 5 May, quoting “St Catherine’s Hospice Make a Will Fortnight.”

Your donation must be paid via your solicitor at your first appointment, either by cheque payable to St Catherine’s Hospice or by debit/credit card.

To find out more contact Andy Perry on: 01293 447369 or email: [email protected].

* If your needs are more complex, your solicitor can charge a commercial rate to reflect the work involved.
