Mr. I S A A C T O D K A W A was born ir» Peddie, Cape Province, about 5 4 years ago and educated in the Cape Province. After leaving school he went to Kimber­ley and joined the Government Post Office Department at Bcaconsficld, where he worked until he retired on pension. H e acquired a number of pro­perties in Kimberley. Was a church­warden of the Holy Cross, Kimberley, Later he went to Johannesburg and be­came a clerk on one of the gold mines. Married Miss S. Williams w h o died in 1928. His son is a demonstrator in the Agricultural Department of the Govern­ment in the Cape Province. His daughter, Gladys, is married to Mr. M . Rubusana, son of l)r. W. B. Rubusana.

M r . F. H . T . U . K um alo, Supervisor o f Schools in Zululand,. was born at H arrism ith in 1895 . H e is a son o f the late C h ie f Joseph K um alo , o f Natal. H e was educated at D r ie fo n te in School and later at the Adam s T ra in in g C ollege , Natal. A f t e r passing the First Class T ea ch ers ’ Exam ination he becam e a teacher and taught at the V erdriet Prim ary School, later at the Adam s Seminary and then at the G eorgcd a le Interm ediate. A f t e r some years he accepted a position in the Newcastle Interm ediate School.

D u r in g the G reat W a r M r . K um alo was one o f the m any thousands o f A fr ican s w h o answered the call. H e jo in e d the South A fr ica n N ative Labour C on tin gen t and w en t to France, w h ere he served fo r over a year, and returned to South A fr ica w ith the co n ­tingent. A large num ber o f m embers o f the South A fr ican N ative Labour C on tin gen t d ied in France.

M r . K um alo is a very brilliant you n g m an, very progressive in his ideas, and takes a keen interest in the educational, social and political l i f e o f his people. Daniel Simon Letanka was born 18 74 , at Soulspoort, Rustenburg, Transvaal. H e was educated at the Kaffir Institution, Grahamstown. M r . Letanka became manager o f a musical com pany that was travelling about the country. A fte r some time he became interpreter at the Supreme Court at Pretoria until the year 1902 . From 1906 to 1 9 09 he interpreted in the courts at Warmbaths and at Blaauw- berg.

F ounded a newspaper, M otsoallc (T h e F r ie n d ) , in 1910 , and later the name o f the paper was changed to lU orom ioa ( T h e M essenger) ; in 1912 it was incorporated w ith the A banin B atho. M r . Letanka became one o f the editors o f Abantu B&tho and still holds that position. Was vice-president o f the Transvaal A fr ican •Congress fo r 16 years. H e successfully contested under the C o n ­gress, the Transvaal Provincial Poll T a x o f 10s., w hich was added to the existing tax o f £2 . T h e Transvaal Provincial D ivision o f the Suprem e Court gave decision in favour o f the G overnm ent, and M r . Letanka appealed to the Appellate Division with the above result. H e was in charge o f the case against the Pass Law fo r w om en in th e '1 ransvaal and successfully conducted it fr o m the Magistrate’ s C o u rt , via the Provincial Division to the Appelate Division o f the Supreme Court. Arrested w ith Messrs. H . Kraai, L . T . M vabaza. Jas. JNlgojo and Cety iw e along with three Europeans for being respon­sible t o r the “ Shilling Strike.” In this case the Attorney-G eneral declined to indict. A matter o f exceptional interest in tfris case is the tact that fo r . the first time in South A fr ica members o f the European and Native races, in com m on cause united, were arrested and charged together because o f their political activities. M r . Letanka was the m oving spirit o f the Transvaal A fr ican Congress and his services were marked w ith success. A ppointed secretary fo r the C ouncil o f C hiefs , 1925, during the presidency o f the Rev. Z . R . M ahabane. W h e n M r . G u m ede became president o f the A fr ican National Congress M r . Letanka was returned as secretary fo r the ‘C ouncil o f C hiefs . D u rin g the last election, w hen D r. P. ka I. Seme was elected president o f the A fr ican National Congress. M r .

where it had gone on the instruction o f the A fr ican National C o n ­gress to protest to the British G overnm ent against the Natives’ Land Act, 191 3, a controversy arose among the officers w hich resulted in a special convention in Bloem fontein where all officers resigned

.en bloc. T h is threatened the complete destruction o f the organi­sation. W ith great difficulty M r . Letanka succeeded in causing another special convention to assemble at Newcastle, where M r . M akgatho was appointed A cting President-General, with a fresh

executive comm ittee, and the danger o f breaking up was averted.

Paramount C h ie f A L B E R T L O B E N G U L A was born at K im ber­ley about 1902. Is the grandson o f the late K ing Lobengula, and the great-grandson o f the great M zilikazi, powerful ruler o f the M ande- bele. As a result o f the attitude o f the Cape Province Governm ent, his father was forced to spend the rest o f his days away from his home and country. On his death Albert and his brother Rhodes were handed to Rev. Stead, o f the Anglican Church, Grahamstown, to be taken care o f . T h e Government paid fo r their education. Paramount C h ie f Albert Lobengula, like his younger brother, was ■educated firstly at St. M atthew ’s Institution and later at the Lovedale Tra in ing Institution. T h e y remained a number o f years in the Cape Province after they le ft school. C h ie f Albert Lobengula is a fine sportsman; an able cricketer and a good fo o t ­ball player. Also very fo n d o f motoring. H e was at length recalled by the Governm ent o f Rhodesia and his people to take his rightful place at the head o f the M andebele T r ib e , Rhodesia.

C h ie f R H O D E S L O B E N G U L A is the grandson o f K ing Loben­gula, and great-grandson o f M zilikazi, the great and pow erfu l ruler o f the Mandebele bribe. C h ie f Rhodes Lobengula is a young man, and was born in Rhodesia about 1904. Was educated at St.M atthew ’s Institution where he qualified as a teacher. H e then went to the Lovedale Training Institution for further education. H ere he obtained the Junior Certificate. A fter spending someyears in the Cape Colony he returned to Rhodesia with his elder brother. Is now employed by the Rhodesian Government as ch ie f clerk in one o f its many departments in Salisbury. H e is a brilliant football and cricket player. At Lovedale he played fo r the Lovedale Com bined Team . Was a formidable half-back. M arried Miss Kawa, formerly teacher at St. Paul’s Mission School, G reen- point, Kimberley.

M r . T H F .O . B. L U J I Z A was born in 1886 and educated at the Lovedale T ra in ing Institution. H e first became secretary o f a workers’ organisation at Last London. In 1922 he was appointed Branch Secretary o f the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union. In 192 5 he was promoted to the office o f the Cape Province Provincial Secretary and later became member o f the National Council o f the same organisation. In 1929 the

grocery store business at Germiston, where he is now. M r . Mabaso became prominent among the Africans in Johannesburg in 1912 when meetings were being held all over the country in order to raise funds for a deputation to England. H e also took a leading part during a strike for increase o f wages. H e is a very numorous yet powerful speaker. During the Great W ar M r. Mabaso organ­ised, conducted and managed a touring choir, and gave concerts all over the Transvaal in aid o f the Governor-G eneral’s Fund. Considerable sums o f money were handed over to the fund.

M r. M A B U Z A was born in a village in the north o f the Trans­vaal. H e came to Johannesburg some years ago, and after a time established a restaurant at 1 88, Market Street, Johannesburg. H e is very progressive and his business place is one o f the best among the Africans. M r. Mabuza takes much interest in entertainments, and is president o f several dancing clubs.

M r. S. B. M A C H F .N G was born in Bechuanaland Protectorate. H e did not have the advantage o f attending school, but taught himself to read and write. W ent to Johannesburg where he worked on the mines1. W hen the African National Congress was being organised he played a prominent part. Became one o f its ch ie f organisers and established the Bechuanaland and Griqualand West Provincial C on ­gress. H e is a very eloquent speaker. H e made many sacrifices in the cause o f establishing a provincial congress.

M r . A. H . M A C I was born and educated in the Cape Province. H e is well known throughout the Province as a leader. H e has progressive ideas and takes keen interest in the education, social and poli­tical li fe o f his people. H e was one o f the founders and a director o f the I^zve, a weekly newspaper which was printed and published in East London.
