Protection from The Silent Killer. In the UK, at least 50 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning every year and thousands more need hospital treatment.

For extra peace of mind, extra CO alarms should beinstalled on each level of a multi-level property andoutside bedrooms and main living spaces.

Possible sources of CO include:• Furnaces• Faulty Boilers• Gas Ranges/Stoves• Water Heaters• Portable Fuel Burning Heaters• Fireplaces• Wood-Burning Stoves• Blocked Chimneys or Flues• Vehicles and other combustion engines runningin an attached garage could also be a source of CO.

New Legal RequirementsOne of the most significant changes now requiresthat a carbon monoxide detector be fitted in anyrooms that have either a replacement or new fixedsolid fuel-burning appliance installed.

Alarms must be placed anywhere between one tothree metres horizontally away from the solid fuelheating appliance. The preferred place for it to belocated is on the ceiling and a minimum of 300 mmaway from the wall.

However, if the carbon monoxide detector is not attached to the ceiling, it should befitted as high up the wall as possible (above anywindows and doors) but not within 150 mm of theceiling.

Remember that carbon monoxide alarms are nosubstitute for inspection and maintenance ofappliances, vents, flues and chimneys.
