Facility Dogs: Modern Working Partners
The mission of KSDS is “to provide
professionally trained guide, service, and facility
dogs for people in need of a canine partner to
enhance their independence, to fully function in
society, and/or to enrich their professional
career responsibilities…” It’s often easy to
understand the function of a service or guide
dog, but it can sometimes be a bit more
challenging to grasp the role of a facility dog.
Since facility dogs are not as visible to the
general public, their impact is occasionally
minimized; however, they have a profound
impact in the facilities where they work. KSDS
facility dogs must have a temperament to handle
a variety of situations. They also have the same
type of training as our service and guide dogs.
At KSDS, our facility dogs are often placed in
school settings or private counseling offices.
One such dog, Zeke, was placed with Sherry White, a special education teacher in a self-
contained school with 4 students and 7 staff members.
Like many of our facility dogs, Zeke is a huge
asset to White and her students, many of whom are on
the autism spectrum. As White stated in a recent
interview, “students with autism can become
physically aggressive during times of anxiety and
distress; [however], just Zeke’s presence can often
have a calming effect during a crisis.” The calming
effect that White describes is not unique to her
classroom. In fact, many of our facility graduates have
expressed the exceptional impact that their dog has
had on their classroom environment. White continues
by sharing how “Zeke has become part of their daily
schedule during specific times of the day when they
already know [aggressive] behaviors usually happen.”
This is of utmost importance in her line of work
3
because “…aggressive episodes often lead to seizure
activity, so having Zeke there to help prevent the
episode also prevents the seizures.” Despite
providing health benefits to the students he serves,
Zeke, like many of our facility dogs, makes school
more fun!
“Our facility dog helps our students to be
excited to come to school” is a sentiment that has
been regularly echoed by KSDS facility dog
graduates since the program’s inception. Although
there is no scientific proof as to why, my hunch is
because the dog makes school more fun. Surely, if
you have the chance to interact with a dog as you
learn, it becomes just a bit easier to find the
motivation to come to school. Like many facility dog
graduates, White stated, that since Zeke was placed,
“[her students] have much less anxiety about the
transition from home to school and vice versa.” She
even went as far as to say that “his [Zeke’s] presence
is more calming than any strategy she can put in
place.” Although we are aware of the incredible role
that teachers play in the lives of children, we love
hearing that our facility dogs make their jobs just a
bit easier.
Toward the end of our interview, White shared
some advice for individuals who are interested in
applying for a future
KSDS facility dog. “It
is the best decision I
have ever made for
my students,” White
said, “however, don’t make the decision lightly. It’s a huge
responsibility, more so than just adopting a pet. Working
dogs need constant attention and supervision. They are
highly intelligent and well trained, and they like to and
need to work!” If you are interested in applying for a
future KSDS facility dog, please keep this in mind.
For more information on our facility dog application process please call KSDS at (785) 325-2256 or email Letha Nelson, our Facility Dog Trainer, at [email protected].

2019 Kansas State Fair
For the fifth straight year, KSDS was represented at the
Kansas State Fair. The fair took place from September
6 – 15, 2019 in Hutchinson, KS. During the ten-day fair,
KSDS reached many individuals who had not previously
heard about our organization. Most conversations were
quick, but some people stuck around and learned a lot
about the mission and vision of KSDS. Whether it came
from seasoned puppy raisers, Board members, staff, or
volunteers, the information provided was critical to the
continued success of KSDS. In addition to interested
newcomers, some booth visitors specifically sought us
out to continue conversations from previous years. A few were looking to learn more about
puppy raising, while others were inquiring about applying for an assistance dog, or
donating to our non-profit. Every year we look forward to the friendships that blossom and
conversations we have during the Kansas State Fair.
Thank you to all who made it a successful experience for KSDS!
Kendra Gives Back Parties
During the last few months KSDS has been blessed to
have taken part in two Kendra Gives Back events at
local Kendra Scott jewelry stores. The first event took
place on October 24th at their location just outside of
Kansas City. The second occurred on February 6th in
Wichita. During both events sips and sweets were
provided, a few KSDS service dogs were present, and
people
could
purchase
great gifts
while simultaneously supporting KSDS. The
donations we received from these two events
helped us to provide new capes, leashes, and
collars for our dogs. We were pleased to have
so much support for KSDS in both Kansas City
and Wichita! We look forward to continuing our
partnerships with Kendra Scott in the future!

Pasta With Pups
This year KSDS was proud to host an event
for members of the local community around
Thanksgiving. On November 21st, KSDS held
“Pasta with Pups,” an event that was geared
towards showing gratitude to members of
Washington County. Attendees enjoyed
pasta, meatballs, salad, garlic bread, and a
variety of desserts while listening to Italian
music at this unique event. Thanks to a
great sponsorship from Thrivent Financial,
KSDS was able to reap a 100% profit on the
donations received during the fundraiser.
Our dogs in training were also on hand to
enjoy pets, hugs, and kisses. We look
forward to hosting similar events in the
years to come!
