Change is in the Air Dani McMahon, Hycada Section Editor The first month of the 2015-2016 school year is coming to an end and it is time to discuss some of the recent changes at Estacada High School. Many students question the reason for these changes and now the answers will be re- vealed. The changes include two school lunches, early-release Wednesdays, and a student decision team created by Prin- cipal Carpenter. Two Lunches Previously, EHS had only one lunch, allowing all students to mingle. This year, EHS switched to having a two-lunch schedule that splits the staff and students in two separate groups. Due to recent budget cuts, the district has lost teachers. This causes EHS to share teach- ers with the middle school. In order for the teachers to travel to and from both schools, the high school had to copy the middle school’s newest bell schedule. Last year, both schools shared the same schedule, but the middle school changed their schedule to accommodate the new flow of sixth graders into their school. Wednesday Early Release In the last few years at EHS, there have been early release Fridays. This year, EHS switched to early release Wednesdays. The decision to change the day of early re- lease was wrapped around attendance and teacher/staff meetings. A lot of parents would take their children out of school on Fridays for vacations or just because Fri- day didn’t seem as important as the other school days. This dropped the attendance rate significantly, and could have meant trouble for the school. By switching to ear- ly release Wednesdays, the administration hopes it will raise the attendance rate. Student Decision Team The final change up for discussion is that Principal Carpenter is trying to ap- ply more student choices and decisions to EHS. At the end of the last school year, teacher and staff were given the book Stu- dent Voice- The instrument of Change. The book’s motto is: “Meaningful school re- form starts with your most powerful part- ners- your students!” Recently, Carpenter created a group he calls the “Aspirations Team.” In the group there are twenty di- verse students, one from every clique at EHS. Together the group decides on im- portant decisions for the school. Their first meeting was Thursday, September 17, and the students were asked whether or not it is a good idea to bring drug dogs into the school to check lockers. The group decided that although some students may take the dogs as not being trusted, bringing the dogs in is for the protection of EHS. Do you have questions you want us to ask Mr. Carpenter? Submit them to the journalism class by emailing Ms. Treanor at [email protected] or by talking with Dani McMahon. Gym Uniforms By Austin Puetz, Hycada Staff Reporter Gym class now looks like a bowl of Ranger Fruity Peb- bles! 2015-16 Estacada High School administration has mandated a new dress code for all Physical Education students: Generic Ranger-green sporting shorts with a grey t-shirt. PE teachers across the board support the decision and are satisfied with the end result. When asked about the new dress code, Gym teacher and football coach, Mr.Mott, says, “Oh, I love it! I think the students enjoy them, too.” Coach Mott goes on to say that the uniforms create a kind of unity among the students and improve both hygiene and dress down rates; Ms.Schnei- der has also noticed this. Most students don’t seem to have much of a problem with the new dress code. Sophomore Cam Hegar says, “They make us more unified, a group, you know? A big happy family.” Junior Damon Shaw also says, ”I don’t really mind the uniforms, they keep you from getting your school clothes sweaty.” Other students don’t share Cam and Damon’s opinion. Sophomore Brandon Thornhill says, “I don’t like them. It is eas- ier to dress down in your own clothes when you don’t have to worry about taking the uniforms home and washing them . But it’s also nice because everyone can be match- ing.” Freshman Gabriel Martinez also has to say,”I hate them!” When asked why, he responded;”The uniforms are uncomfort- able. When I take them out of the dryer, they are all itchy. When I get sweaty, they are sticky and uncomfortable.” While most students seem to like the new school uniforms, there are still those who don’t like the policy change. But, for now, get used to seeing the grey and green. In this issue... Anotherproblemthathasarisenfromhavingtwolunchesis that clubs, sports, and peo-ple who are doing a projectforclassnolongerhaveatimetheycanallmeetupduringtheschool day. On the flip side, LeslieNuno, a freshman, thinks thathaving two lunches is a goodthing. If EHS only had onelunch, “the cafeteriawould betoo packed; this way we havetimetogetourlunchandactu-allyeatitall.”
