_____________________Third Sunday after Pentecost____
The Holy Ministry is Called Out by God’s
Mercy
June 21st & 22nd, 2020
2
As Christians united in common faith, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church exists to nurture
believers and bring the lost to faith in Jesus through God’s Holy Word and Sacraments.
Welcome!
Restrooms are in the church basement located just at the bottom of the
front stairs. Changing tables are available to parents.
An elevator is available on the north side of the church entrance.
The basement is available to parents needing to quiet small children. The
area is equipped with closed circuit TV.
Hearing assistance devices are also available from the ushers.
Out of respect for all who worship today, please silence all electronic devices.
Those wishing to attend Holy Communion
Lutherans understand Holy Communion as, among other things, a
statement of agreement with the church’s teachings. For this reason, you
will not want to commune with us until you have had a chance to
compare your beliefs with our church’s. Please speak to our pastor about
this before receiving communion with us.

Third Sunday after Pentecost June 21st & 22nd, 2020
The Holy Ministry is Called Out by God’s Mercy We are saved by faith. That faith trusts that Jesus gives us his righteousness as a gift. He
freely gives forgiveness to us so we are called to give that forgiveness to others.
HYMN O Christ, Who Called the Twelve – CWS 770
4
P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: ♬ Amen.
CONFESSION OF SINS
P: Beloved in the Lord; let us draw near with a true heart and confess our
sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
to grant us forgiveness.
C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and
that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words and actions. I
have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I
deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly
sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray;
Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.
C: ♬ Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.
5
P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his
only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called
servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C: ♬ Amen.
GLORY BE TO GOD
P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.
C: ♬ Glory be to God on high,
and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.
We praise you, we bless you, we worship you,
we glorify you, we give thanks to you, for your great glory.
O Lord God, heav’nly King, God the Father almighty.
O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ;
O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father;
You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.
You take away the sin of the world; receive our prayer.
You sit at the right hand of God the Father; have mercy on us.
For you only are holy, you only are the Lord.
You only, O Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
are most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
P: The Lord be with you.
C: ♬ And also with you.
P: Let us pray.
O God, the strength of all who trust in you, mercifully hear our
prayers. Be gracious to us in our weakness and give us strength to
keep your commandments in all we say and do; through Jesus Christ,
your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
C: ♬ Amen.
FIRST LESSON Hosea 5:15-6:3 Let us return to the Lord.
Then I will return to my lair until they have borne their guilt and seek my
face—in their misery they will earnestly seek me.” 6 “Come, let us return
6
to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us
but he will bind up our wounds. 2 After two days he will revive us; on the
third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence. 3 Let us
acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as
the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like
the spring rains that water the earth.”
PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 119c We put our trust in God’s Word
7
SECOND LESSON Romans 4:18-25
Abraham’s faith was credited as righteousness
Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of
many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring
be.” 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was
as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that
Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief
regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave
glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he
had promised. 22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” 23 The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who
believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was
delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our
justification.
VERSE OF THE DAY
P: Alleluia. God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, and
entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Alleluia. (2 Cor. 5:19)
C: ♬ Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.
GOSPEL LESSON & SERMON TEXT Matthew 9:9-13 The calling of Matthew
C: ♬ Glory be to you, O Lord.
As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the
tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and
followed him. 10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many
tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your
teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 On hearing this, Jesus
said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and
learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come
to call the righteous, but sinners.”
C: ♬ Praise be to you, O Christ.
NICENE CREED
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
8
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and became fully human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the
Scriptures. He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who in unity with the Father and the Son
is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
HYMN Lord Jesus, You Have Come – CW 546
SERMON Pastor Matthew Holtz
CREATE IN ME
C: ♬ Create in me, a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with your free Spirit. Amen.
OFFERING
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
9
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
Now and forever. Amen.
THE SACRAMENT Today we offer individual distribution of the Lord’s Supper. For those unable to
drink alcohol, there is white grape juice. Gluten free wafers are also available. Please speak
to a pastor if you need either one.
P: The Lord be with you.
C: ♬ And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts.
C: ♬ We lift them up unto the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.
C: ♬ It is good and right so to do.
P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places
give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who promised that wherever two or
three come together in his name, there he is with them to shepherd
his flock till he comes again in glory. Therefore, with all the saints on
earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their
glorious song:
C: ♬ Holy, holy, holy Lord God of heavenly hosts;
Heav’n and earth are full of your glory,
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he, blessed is he,
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and
when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples,
10
saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this
in remembrance of me.”
Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink
from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is
poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you
drink it, in remembrance of me.”
The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C: ♬ Amen.
O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
Have mercy on us.
O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
Have mercy on us.
O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
Grant us your peace. Amen.

In an age of anxiety we still believe that peace comes from Jesus Christ, the Son of God. In an age of confusion we still believe that the Bible is the word of God, inerrant and infallible. In an age of doubt we still believe that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. In an age of guilt we still believe that Jesus died on the cross to pay for the sins of the world, bringing complete pardon and joy to all believers. In an age of reason we still believe that God is at work in the sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. In an age of change we still believe in one unchanging God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Whether you are a first time visitor
or returning guest, we are delighted
to share our worship with you.
Please come back and worship with
us again.
