DISMAS MINISTRY : Dismas Ministry is a National Catholic Prison Outreach named after the repentant thief, Dismas, who was executed with Jesus on Calvary. In that final hour, Dismas took stock of his life and turned to Jesus for mercy: “Jesus, remember me when you enter your kingdom” Luke 23:42. In the way so typical of his ministry, Jesus turned to him and said: “This day you will be with me in paradise” Luke 23:43. Dismas Ministry focuses primarily on a spiritual approach with inmates who want to understand and strengthen their relationship with God. As one prisoner wrote, “Prisoners need God and the love of Jesus and Mary as much or even more than the population as a whole.” Inmates who deepen their faith and grow in understanding of scripture will become less likely to offend others when they are released. For this reason, Dismas provides bible and faith study materials, a prayer book for inmates, and free Catholic bibles. As Jesus taught us: “What you have received freely, give freely.” Matthew 10:8.

Dismas Ministry also supports victims of crime by creating an awareness of their needs in the community. It does this in various ways: by providing literature about victims’ needs and resources for their care, special prayer services for victims in which they can find support from the faith community and mutual encouragement from their fellow victims. Victims can lead the way in showing us how to be there for them. If you would like to learn more about what the Dismas Ministry is doing right here in Rock County, contact Mark Warren at 751-3675, email [email protected], or join us when St. Mary Parish hosts the Rock County Dismas Ministry meeting on Saturday, January 3 at 9:00 in the Ark meeting room.

PASTORAL HOME VISITS: Do you know someone who is in need of receiving Communion in their home? Perhaps they can no longer drive, or they are ill. The winter months can be very difficult for some people to come

to Mass. Please call Sr. Carol for this ministry at 868-3339. ST. MARY CEMETERY NOTICE: Current pricing for graves at our cemetery is $250 per grave. The rate per grave will be raised to $300 beginning January 1, 2015. If you are interested in purchasing a plot, please contact the office at 868-3335. ALTERNATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS: Are you looking for a simple, convenient way to make a gift to charity this year without dipping into your checking or savings account? If you are over 70 ½, you can transfer up to $100,000 from your IRA to charity in 2014 without paying any federal income tax. Your gift can be made simply by notifying your plan custodian of your intent to make a current transfer to benefit your parish, or the diocese. And you will feel good knowing that you were able to make a simple easy gift from your IRA this year. Consult your tax advisor to determine the possible tax saving benefits available to you. For more information on how to make an IRA rollover gift in 2014, please contact the parish office or Jill Driscoll at the Diocese of Madison at 608-821-3039. Stewardship: A Way of Life

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

“...as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive.” Colossians 3:13

Forgiveness—one of the hardest things for people to do. It’s amazing how long we can hold a grudge or be angry with someone. As we cele-brate the feast of the Holy Family, take this opportunity to give the gift of forgiveness to someone—maybe someone in your family, maybe a friend, maybe a co-worker or neighbor or, maybe yourself. Pick up the phone or text someone right now.

Please keep these parishioners and family members in your prayers:

WORD OF LIFE: “Are we moved by the

suffering of those without shelter? Do we seek to alleviate the fear, confusion and panic that women facing unexpected pregnancies may be experiencing? Do our hearts ache for elderly patients in nursing homes who feel abandoned and unwanted, having no one to visit them? Our mission is to show each person the love of Christ. As

uniquely created individuals, we each have unique gifts which we are called to use to share Christ’s love.”

2014 Respect Life Month Statement

The truly sacred attitude toward life is in no sense an escape from the sense of nothingness that assails us when we are left alone with ourselves.

Meet our Seminarians There are currently 33 men studying at various seminaries throughout the USA or in Rome, to become priests in the Diocese of Madison. Each week we will feature a seminarian in this section for you to get better acquainted with these men. We ask you to pray for them as they continue on their journey of faith. Additional information on our seminarians can be found on the Diocese YouTube site: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2bjxQbqE8m3YyiSz5SfEQnUteaIbt2Lp and the Diocese blog: http://www.madisonvocations.org/Resources/SeminarianBlogtumblrfeed.aspx

Jared Holzhuter: I am from Janesville and my home parish is St. John Vianney. My voca-tion story: When I was very young I was lucky to be brought up in a Catholic family. We went to mass every Satur-day night. 7th grade is when I really took ownership and took inter-est in the priesthood. We found out that my grandma, who lived just half a mile down the road and loved to spoil us grandkids, had cancer. It was a real-ly sad time for my family. I wanted to help out so I turned to God and started praying the rosary just about every day for my grandma. Eventually, she did get better. I remember the night my grandma found out that the tumor had shrunk. Just the joy of knowing that God is real and he knows and cares for me. That’s where it started. The biggest influence on my vocation has been my parents. It’s a small thing, but before bed, my dad would always make the sign of the cross on

my forehead and say “the Lord bless you and keep you.” My mom was always willing to pray with me, even when I was an awkward 7th grader. I owe them so much for that, in showing me what God is like in their love and care. Thank

God for good parents! Great treasurers began opening up for me. It was at that time, our parish got a new priest—Fr. Donn Heiar. Our parish was “alive”, and the idea of being a priest didn’t seem that bad. I went to UW-Madison and waited to get involved at St. Paul’s, but by the time I got involved I couldn’t deny all the good work God had done for me; the idea He planted of seminary and priesthood in my heart. By my senior year it seemed the right choice to go to seminary. Jared currently attends Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit and is with the Class of 2017.

Need some time to refocus? Our Lady of the Assumption will celebrate Lessons and Carols on Saturday, January 3 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in their church. This year the 30 voice OLA Parish Choir will be joined by instrumentalists from the parish and area to provide an uplifting prayer and musical experience. This is a wonderful opportunity to come together in a quiet, joyful way to close out the Christmas Season. There is no charge for this event, but we ask that you bring a food or toiletry donation for CARITAS. For more information call Randy at 608-362-9066, x111 or [email protected].

The Parish financial books will close on December 31, 2014. Anyone wishing to make contributions for the YEAR 2014 must do so ON OR BEFORE DECEMBER 31, 2014. All checks received at the parish after December 31, 2014, will be recorded as contributions for the year 2015.

An excellent way to lower your tax payment is by making an additional contribution to a charity. Your contributions to your parish qualify!
