Liturgy Corner by: Deborah Ferry Feast of the Holy Family

(taken from Commentary On Today’s Gospel)

There is an odd tension in this passage that wrestles between presenting Jesus as (1) a pious Jewish youth who observes the Law and submits to the authority of his parents and (2) a self-assured young man who rather ominously suggests this his heavenly Father has a stronger claim upon him than the flesh and blood parents who breathlessly seek and find him in the Temple.

The details of this unique story, told only by Luke, are fascinating and revealing. The family has honored its religious duty to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the annual Passover festival. Jesus is twelve, nearly a man in that culture, but also very much in the care of his parents. Remaining behind is clearly a choice Jesus makes without his parents’ knowledge. It is a fascinating glimpse into that time and culture to read that, for an entire day, Mary and Joseph were comfortable in the assumption that their son was among relatives in the caravan. When they discover their mistake, they turn back and find him only after a search of “three days.” While this detail is a likely anticipation of Jesus’ dark sojourn in the tomb, it also suggests the distraught state of the parents when finally they find the boy in the Temple precincts.

The scene of which he is at the center is indeed remarkable: this boy, shy of his bar mitzvah, is nonetheless holding court among the scholars and teachers, astounding them with the insight he manifests, not only in his “questions,” but also in his “understanding and his answers.” He feels at home; he is at home and seems as surprised that Joseph and Mary came looking as they are to find he’d stayed behind on purpose. Mary takes the lead and doesn’t hide her disappointment and hurt as she asks what almost every mother has asked at some point, “How could you?”

Jesus replies with his own questions that seem to challenge his parents; assumptions about who is parenting whom. Jesus has another Father and his “house” and “work” have already laid claim to Jesus’ heart. We sense Jesus has never spoken like this before. Mary and Joseph are left to wonder, as many parents do, about what awaits their remarkable child.

The sober final sentences tells us of Jesus’ obedience, his mother’s silent prayerful musings, and of how Jesus, in his hidden, inner life grows into an impressive figure before both “God and man.”

AUTORIDAD SERVICIO Y RESPETO A LAS legitimas diferencias.

Temporary Liturgical Adaptations during the 2018/2019 Flu/Cold Season

The Public Health Officer of Santa Clara County has again requested that we make a number of temporary adaptations to our celebrations of the Eucharist, so as to foster the health of our worshipping communities and also of the wider community. Given the anticipated increase of the flu throughout the Diocese in upcoming weeks, these adaptations will be implemented starting, December 15/16 until further notice. For the duration of the flu/cold/virus season, Holy Communion will not be shared under the form of Consecrated Wine. Provision should be made for those parishioners who rely upon receiving Holy Communion under the Sacred Species of Consecrated Wine because of Celiac Disease or other conditions that do not tolerate the ingestion of a consecrated host. Holy Communion will be distributed only into the hands of communicants; during this time, Holy Communion will not be distributed on the tongue. Should a communicant be unwilling to follow this directive, that person is to receive Holy Communion after everyone else has done so. People should refrain from holding hands during the recitation or singing of the Lord’s Prayer. The exchanging Sign of Peace should be adapted so as to allow for a greeting that does not require shaking hands or touching. All who administer Holy Communion are to wash their hands with an alcohol-based anti-bacterial solution, such as Purell, before and after they administer the Sacrament. This precaution also extends to those who minister to the homebound. The obligation to participate in Sunday Mass does not hold for those who are seriously ill, and that it would be a mark of Christian charity for anyone who has fever, cough or other such symptoms to remain at home. Thank you for your immediate attention to these matters.
