The people standing, the Celebrant says Celebrant Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit People And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and forever. Amen. Celebrant and People Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria in Excelsis Celebrant and People

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, Almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: Have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord; you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect of the Day Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The First Lesson A Reading from 1 Kings (19:15-16,19-21) The Lord said to Elijah, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place." So he set out from there, and found Elisha son of Shaphat, who was plowing. There were twelve yoke of oxen ahead of him, and he was with the twelfth. Elijah passed by him and threw his mantle over him. He left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, "Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you." Then Elijah said to him, "Go back again; for what have I done to you?" He returned from following him, took the yoke of oxen, and slaughtered them; using the equipment from the oxen, he boiled their flesh, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out and followed Elijah, and became his servant. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 16 (Read at the 8 a.m. service only)

Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you; * I have said to the Lord, "You are my Lord, my good above all other."

All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, * upon those who are noble among the people.

But those who run after other gods * shall have their troubles multiplied.

Their libations of blood I will not offer, * nor take the names of their gods upon my lips.

O Lord, you are my portion and my cup; * it is you who uphold my lot.

My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; * indeed, I have a goodly heritage.

I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; * my heart teaches me, night after night.

I have set the Lord always before me; * because he is at my right hand I shall not fall.

My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; * my body also shall rest in hope.

For you will not abandon me to the grave, * nor let your holy one see the Pit.

You will show me the path of life; * in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

Psalm 77:1-2, 11-20 (Read at the 10:30 a.m. service only)

I will cry aloud to God; * I will cry aloud, and he will hear me.

In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; * my hands were stretched out by night and did not tire; I refused to be comforted.

I will remember the works of the Lord, * and call to mind your wonders of old time.

I will meditate on all your acts * and ponder your mighty deeds.

Your way, O God, is holy; * who is so great a god as our God?

You are the God who works wonders * and have declared your power among the peoples.

By your strength you have redeemed your people, * the children of Jacob and Joseph.

The waters saw you, O God; the waters saw you and trembled; * the very depths were shaken.

The clouds poured out water; the skies thundered; * your arrows flashed to and fro;

The sound of your thunder was in the whirlwind; your lightnings lit up the world; * the earth trembled and shook.

Your way was in the sea, and your paths in the great waters, * yet your footsteps were not seen.

You led your people like a flock * by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

The Second Lesson A Reading from Galatians (5:1,13-25) For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not consumed by one another. Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel

Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke (9:51-62) People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When the days drew near for Jesus to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; but they did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. When his disciples James and John saw it, they said, "Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?" But he turned and rebuked them. Then they went on to another village.

As they were going along the road, someone said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." To another he said, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." But Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God." Another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home." Jesus said to him, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."

Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Homily Matthew Helms (8:00 a.m.) The Rev. Barbara Platt-Hendren (10:30 a.m.) The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People

Let us pray. Gracious God: in your infinite love you have created for us new life through our Savior, Jesus Christ. Give us grace and courage to answer his call and to follow where he leads, all the days of our lives.

Build your Church to be a beacon of light in all dark places. Anoint with your power, once again, those you have called to take on the mantle of ordained ministry, especially Michael, Sam, and Anne our Bishops, Greg and Sally our Priests. Bless Matthew our intern and all of those you have placed along his journey of faith. Speak to him clearly your plan for his life and give him grace and strength to follow you wherever you go. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Teach us to see your face in all of creation, and give us a reverence for this fragile Earth, our island home. Where there is war and rumors of war bring in your message of love, joy, and peace. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Be near and protect all those who are in times of trouble, especially: Make their heart glad, make their spirit rejoice, and may their bodies rest in hope. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Precious in your sight is the death of your faithful, especially: Gather them to your presence where there is fullness of joy and pleasures forevermore. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Be present with all those celebrating birthdays this week and lift them up, especially: Remind them and all of us that we belong to Christ Jesus today and every day. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.

Set our hearts on fire to follow you wherever you go, and bind us together by the Holy Spirit, in the communion of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God, St. John the Baptist, St. Peter, St. Paul, and all your saints. Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer. The Celebrant adds the concluding Collect.

Lord, hear the prayers of your people; and what we have asked faithfully; grant that we may obtain effectually, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Confession of Sin

The Celebrant says

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Celebrant says

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. The Peace

Celebrant God makes peace within us. People Let us claim it. Celebrant God makes peace between us. People Let us share it. Visitor Welcome and Announcements

The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer B

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty,

Creator of heaven and earth. Here a proper Preface is said by the Celebrant Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory,

Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

The Celebrant continues

We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father, Celebrant and People

We remember his death. We proclaim his resurrection. We await his coming in glory. The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Patrick and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread

Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia!

Episcopal School Exploratory Committee asks for prayers. About six months ago, parishioners from St. Patrick’s and St. Alban’s met to explore the possibility of founding an Episcopal School in the Lake Norman area for Kindergarten through eighth grade. Currently, we are researching demographic and marketing data to ensure our identification of need is matched by the lake community’s capacity to sustain an educational institution defined by the traditions of our faith. The Exploratory Committee is asking for your prayers as the team continues its work. If you feel called to pray for our team, please place your signature on the sign-up form found in the Narthex and commit to praying daily for this endeavor. Volunteers are needed to prepare food for the Mooresville Soup Kitchen on the first or second Tuesday of each month from 1-3 p.m. Sign up by going to the bottom of the home page on our website (welcomestpat.org) and clicking on the volunteer heart. Prayer Lists: If you or someone you know is in need of prayer, contact Rick Krumel ([email protected]) to be added to the prayer chain or Lisa Underwood ([email protected] or 704-663-5659) to be added to the Sunday morning prayer list. Reserve the Altar Flowers. Every Sunday our church is blessed to have beautiful flowers grace our altar. Donating altar flowers is a simple way to honor a loved one, glorify God, and beautify the altar. Flowers can be donated in honor of a person or in memory of someone, in celebration of an anniversary or other milestone, or in thanksgiving for friends or family. Their names will appear in the bulletin on the Sunday you select. If you prefer, you can simply give the flowers to the Glory of God. If you would like to share in this opportunity, go to www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0b44a8a829a6f94-2019 or call the church office (704-663-5659).
