O Lord, make us have perpetual love and reverence for your holy Name, for you never fail to help and govern those whom you have set upon the sure foundation of your lovingkindness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans 6:1-11 (The Message)

6 1-3 So what do we do? Keep on sinning so God can keep on forgiving? I should hope not! If we’ve left the country where sin is sovereign, how can we still live in our old house there? Or didn’t you realize we packed up and left there for good? That is what happened in baptism. When we went under the water, we left the old country of sin behind; when we came up out of the water, we entered into the new country of grace—a new life in a new land!

3-5 That’s what baptism into the life of Jesus means. When we are lowered into the water, it is like the burial of Jesus; when we are raised up out of the water, it is like the resurrection of Jesus. Each of us is raised into a light-filled world by our Father so that we can see where we’re going in our new grace-sovereign country.

6-11 Could it be any clearer? Our old way of life was nailed to the cross with Christ, a decisive end to that sin-miserable life—no longer at sin’s every beck and call! What we believe is this: If we get included in Christ’s sin-conquering death, we also get included in his life-saving resurrection. We know that when Jesus was raised from the dead it was a signal of the end of death-as-the-end. Never again will death have the last word. When Jesus died, he took sin down with him, but alive he brings God down to us. From now on, think of it this way: Sin speaks a dead language that means nothing to you; God speaks your mother tongue, and you hang on every word. You are dead to sin and alive to God. That’s what Jesus did.

Lector: Hear what the Spirit of God is saying to the Church People: Thanks Be to God Alleluia Sung Refrain

The Gospel Reading

Priest: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

24-25 “A student doesn’t get a better desk than her teacher. A laborer doesn’t make more money than her boss. Be content—pleased, even—when you, my students, my harvest hands, get the same treatment I get. If they call me, the Master, ‘Dungface,’ what can the workers expect?

26-27 “Don’t be intimidated. Eventually everything is going to be out in the open, and everyone will know how things really are. So don’t hesitate to go public now.

28 “Don’t be bluffed into silence by the threats of bullies. There’s nothing they can do to your soul, your core being. Save your fear for God, who holds your entire life—body and soul—in his hands.

9-31 “What’s the price of a pet canary? Some loose change, right? And God cares what happens to it even more than you do. He pays even greater attention to you, down to the last detail—even numbering the hairs on your head! So don’t be intimidated by all this bully talk. You’re worth more than a million canaries.

2-33 “Stand up for me against world opinion and I’ll stand up for you before my Father in heaven. If you turn tail and run, do you think I’ll cover for you?

34-37 “Don’t think I’ve come to make life cozy. I’ve come to cut—make a sharp knife-cut between son and father, daughter and mother, bride and mother-in-law—cut through these cozy domestic arrangements and free you for God. Well-meaning family members can be your worst enemies. If you prefer father or mother over me, you don’t deserve me. If you prefer son or daughter over me, you don’t deserve me.

38-39 “If you don’t go all the way with me, through thick and thin, you don’t deserve me. If your first concern is to look after yourself, you’ll never find yourself. But if you forget about yourself and look to me, you’ll find both yourself and me.

Priest: The Gospel of the Lord People: Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Homily

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People

Loving God, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for all bishops, priests and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacrament.

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That wise decisions for the good of all may be made.

We for peace and justice, that all may be treated with fairness and kindness. That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

We pray for the sick, especially in this time of pandemic. That healing and wholeness may come. We pray for all who have died. Let Light perpetual shine upon them.

We pray to you also for the forgiveness of our sins. (Silence may be kept.)

Leader and People:

Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution

Priest: Almighty God have mercy on you and forgive all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Greeting of Peace

We greet one another offering the peace of Christ to our neighbors.

Thanks be to God for your generosity. Music during Offertory In My Life, Lord, Be Glorified

The Eucharistic Prayer Celebrant: The Lord is with us. All: God’s Spirit is here.

Celebrant: Look with kindness, O God, on Your people gathered here before You. Hear our hearts beating, lifted in song of thanksgiving for the glorious resurrection of your son Jesus Christ, who leads us from death in sin to new light and life forever. Hear our voices joined with generations of saints, with all of your creation, and with all those keeping company in heaven as we sing:

Sanctus Sung by all Land of Rest

The Celebrant continues

Celebrant: Loving God, You are always present with Your people. You sent Your Son, Jesus, who gave His life for us and who came to forgive us and taught us to forgive each other.

On the very night He was betrayed, Jesus took bread and gave You thanks. He broke it and gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take eat, this is My body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

In the same way, after supper He took the cup and gave You thanks. He gave it to them, saying, “Drink this, all of you; this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me.”

Celebrant: We who are invited into the mystery of this most generous faith proclaim. All: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Celebrant: And so Creator, who has gathered us here this night, Send forth you Spirit

so that these gifts may become for us the Body and Blood of Your beloved Son, Jesus, the Christ, in whom we have become Your very own!. Send us the Spirit of the Lamb.

Page 9: The Holy Communion...The Holy Communion 321Contact (kon-takt) 1.n. the act or state of touching; a touching or meeting Cathedral Church of the Nativity A Reading from Paul’s letter

All: Amen.

Celebrant: And now as Jesus has taught, we pray,

All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

The Breaking of Bread

Celebrant: Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. All: Therefore, let us keep the feast! Alleluia! Celebrant: This is the table of our Lord. It is made ready for those who love him

and for those who want to love him more. Come, you who have much faith and you who have little, you who have been here often and you who have been here long, you who have tried to follow and you who have failed. Come, because it is the Lord who invites you. It is his will that those who want him should meet him here.

Spiritual Communion Prayer My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Communion

Music during Communion Celebrant: Let us pray. Celebrant and People Lord Jesus Christ, you have put your life into our hands; now we put our lives into yours. Take us, renew us, and remake us. What we have been in the past; what we shall be, through you awaits us. Lead us on. Take us with you. Amen. The Blessing

At the breaking of the dawn may the Risen Saviour bless your home with grace and peace from above, with joy and laughter, and with love And when night is nigh, and day is done May He keep you safe from all harm.

Save the Date: Cathedral Arts will present a virtual Patriotic Concert on Saturday, July 4 at

8pm, just before the annual Fireworks. The Americana program will include choral music by a

group of incredible singers - settings of America, My Country 'tis of Thee, God Bless America,

Let there Be Peace on Earth, and Battle Hymn of the Republic. Organ music will include the

Copland 'Fanfare,' a story-in-song suite called 'The 4th of July,' a Festive March based on the

Battle Hymn and Lift Up Your Voice and Sing, and an organ duet version of Stars and Stripes

Forever. We will also give thanks for our great land and pray for our country through poetry,

readings, and prayers.

NavajoLand Fundraiser-Hi friends! The Thresholds class here at the Cathedral is hosting a

fundraiser for the Navajo people, a culture that is very close to our heart. Our class consists of

the high school youth who participate in events regularly together. We would like to give

everyone a bit more background information about our fundraiser. A group of us traveled to

Arizona this past summer to visit Navajoland to do service work, but our trip ended up being so

much more than waking up in the morning and cleaning up the church’s cemetery. Everyone in

the group was so immersed in the Navajo culture that it was difficult not to fall in love with it.

We had the opportunity to get to know some of their people and hear their stories. Their passion,

love and gratefulness for not only their culture, but anyone who wants to learn about it, is

unmatched.

Unfortunately, the Navajos are struggling during this pandemic. They have a higher rate of

COVID-19 per capita compared to any other place in this country. They also do not have the

same resources that the rest of the country does, and not being able to regularly work is affecting

them greatly. When we all heard this, our group knew that we needed to help them in some way.

The Cathedral will be running a fundraiser to donate to the Navajo people through Good

Shephard Mission, one of the Episcopal Churches in Navajoland. We are asking that you donate

as little or as much as you can for us to reach our goal of $1,000.00. If you donate $20.00 or

more, you will receive a scented Navajo made bar of soap with your donation. While we were in

Arizona, we were fortunate enough to be able to tour and learn about the factory where the soaps

are made, and both the process and products are absolutely delightful! We thank you all so much

for helping the Navajo people. Every dollar counts! To Donate send check by mail to 321

Wyandotte St and note Navajoland or visit www.nativitycathedral.org and click on donate.
