You can contact her with absence information at 847.657.2594 or [email protected] Each day your child is absent; please call the health office to report the illness by 8:15am. Before school hours, a message may be left on voice mail. If your child is ill with a strep infection or other illness that is contagious, report this at the time of your call. Your child should be free of fever for twenty-four hours before returning to school.
Hoffman Health Office New Phone – 847.657.2594

Also -- For student safety, …We discourage bringing dogs onto school grounds during drop-off and pick-up times. We can't know every pet that may be brought well enough to guarantee that they are all safe around large groups of children, and some of our students are also afraid of dogs. Thank you for your consideration.
On Wed, November 16th Ms. Dobias will present a training for parents on how to complete assignments for band using the iPad. Band students will receive instruction in how to complete assignments, but they often forget how or need help navigating the technology. Attendance is not required, but the training will enable parents to help their students should they encounter difficulty or frustration when doing assignments.
The training will take place in the multi-purpose room (lunchroom) from 7:00-8:00 pm on November 16, 2016. Students are welcome to attend as well, but parents should bring their iPad whether their student attends or not. Topics and apps covered will include Schoology, QuickVoice, Pages, Camera, Garageband and Metronome. If you have any questions, or are interested in attending, please contact Ms. Dobias at 847-657-2522 or [email protected].
Hoffman Elementary Art 2016-17 Vol 2 November 4, 2016
Aspen Mirabal Thanks to the generous support of the PTA, the Third grade students enjoyed a story told by Aspen Mirabal about Blue Corn Maiden. Blue Corn Maiden is a special symbol to Aspen’s Taos pueblo in New Mexico. In addition to telling the story, teaching Spanish vocabulary, and sharing some fresh corn from her village, Aspen helped
the artists make clay amulets with the symbol of Blue Corn Maiden carved into the surface that they can later wear.
Look up, look down, art is all around [email protected] [email protected] 1
Third Grade
The Third grade artists had a unique visitor in October. Miss. Aspen Mirabal introduced the students to the culture of her Taos Pueblo.
Fourth Grade
The Fourth grade artists were introduced to the Terracotta Warriors of China. They will soon be creating their own clay warrior.
Fifth Grade
The students learned about Mexican artists and art as they focused on Los Dias De Los Muertos or The Days Of The Dead. They made plaster masks that they decorated with bright colorful organic shapes and designs. An ofrenda is set up in our classroom and a larger one will be on display soon by the LRC.

Grading
Students are not graded on their artistic ability but rather their comprehension and application of learned concepts, effort, improvement and behavior. As I have explained to the classes a number of times, they are graded on everything they do in art from the moment they walk in the door. Participation, self discipline, clean up, iPad usage, proper use of materials, time management and completion of their project to the best of the their ability are all factors contributing to their trimester grades.
Keep in mind that the 1-4 scale does not necessarily coincide with a letter grade. The 1 rating indicates that your child needs development in the skill, 2 indicates that your child is progressing in the skill, 3 indicates that your child consistently demonstrates and applies the skill, and 4 indicates that your child is outstanding in the skill.
Digital Art Portfolios
Artists save their artwork and collect it in a portfolio so they can see their progress. We are doing the same thing in art but utilizing the world of technology. The artists will soon be creating digital portfolios including their artwork, worksheets, and learning targets. In a few weeks, ask your child to see their portfolio in Keynote.
Do you have an eye for design and display? We can always use help hanging artwork. Email Mrs. Schober at [email protected]

Birthday Books Help Our Library Collection Grow
The Hoffman Learning Center offers an exciting opportunity for you to celebrate your child’s birthday and add books to the library collection at the same time!
For a $10.00 donation, your child may select a new book from a special selection reserved just for birthdays. A special bookplate will be placed in the book with your child’s name and their name will be entered into the computer as the donator. They will then be the first student to check out the book. When the book is returned, it will be available for other students to check out and enjoy.
Children take great pleasure in giving a special birthday book that benefits all current and future Hoffman students. A good school library collection makes for enthusiastic readers! We urge you to consider the Birthday Book Club! THANK YOU to the following students who celebrated their birthdays this fal l by donating these books to the Hoffman Learning Resource Center. Paul A. 학교 휴교 지침

Respetuosamente, Dr. Griff Powell y Dra. Patricia Wernet Superintendentes Interinos
